So I'm in the process of changing over my stereo in a Toyota Highlander 05 for a Power Acoustik PDN 626B. I used this harness.
Now when I put my key in to on/acc all my lights turn on, and the head unit turns on, radio plays, etc. As soon as I turn the ignition to start, everything dies, including all the instrument panel lights. They don't come back until I disconnect and reconnect the battery. All my wiring seems to be connected properly.
Do you guys have any ideas? I don't think it's the battery if everything still powers up before starting. I reconnected my original stereo and am having the same problem. I'm kind of a car noob sorry if this isn't the right place to post.
You have to buy this adapter. https://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-1761-Wiring-Harness-Speaker/dp/B0002BEQJ8/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=metra+1761&qid=1617109052&sr=8-3 If you don't want to wait for shipping, Best Buy has it and will price match that link.
I mean the way to get power to the stereo. You need to screw the factory bracket into the aftermarket radio so that it'll stay in place. If you have a GT, then this is probably the right harness adapter for you. It's a bit different if you have a GT-S though.
yea maybe.... Next time buy the wire harness for your car...They are like 3 bucks
Been there, done that.
The radio itself was ~$300, and I had to get a custom sub-harness made to plug into the factory wiring so I could keep the steering wheel controls. That was around another $60 or so at the time. I don't recall who made it for me.
I also got these wiring harness adapters + the install kit:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003VYWSES/
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018NT4UUA/
The stock backup camera does not work without a special canbus adapter. Because the stock camera sucks, I got an aftermarket license plate camera and had that professionally installed.
https://www.amazon.com/License-Reverse-Parking-Waterproof-Universal/dp/B07KH4ZQC4/
This or something equal is nice because it has infrared receivers in the camera to enable night vision. It works great, but does get "smeary" when wet.
FYI, I chose the android head unit because it has the option of offline navigation, with an app like Osmand. It works well.
Go aftermarket, I recently installed a new radio in my tC and it was really easy. If you need help just let me know and I can help you find the correct harness and install kit for your model.
The radio I have was $230 open box at best buy and I got the Sirius XM tuner for $50. The wire harness was around $10 and so was the dash kit.
Edit: I also installed a Axxess ASWC-1 and the aftermarket Toyota radio control harness so my steering wheel controls work still and a Micro bypass adapter so the DVD player can work without the car having to be in park..
Speakers + Stereo are a solid choice. Vehicle shouldnt give any issues so long as you don't have the JBL audio system.
I believe you have the JBL Premium stereo. That's the only thing that directly makes sense. I can think of 2 other reasons, but they don't make as much sense.
If you DID have the JBL Premium stereo (usually has a JBL logo somewhere on the face of the old stereo) then it is likely that your OEM amplifier can't keep up, and it's causing all sorts of fault with the new speakers and new power from the upgraded head unit.
The solution to that is bypassing the OEM stereo, which if I recall, the Bypass plug is in the stereo opening, near the passenger side. You can see the extra plugs in this video at the timestamp I'm posting. https://youtu.be/YLX9NBiq3aM?t=362
You can replace the wire harness that you bought, and wire in this one to complete the bypass. https://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-1761-Wiring-Harness-Speaker/dp/B0002BEQJ8
The 2nd thing that could be causing issues is a short to ground in the wiring. This is usually unlikely if you took the time to wire things properly. Also the chances of a global static is minimal, the usual result is individual or localized distortion on the afflicted speaker(s)
The last thing that makes sense is a lack of proper power, Such as the power(and/or ground) connection to the stereo is insufficient and that is causing the stereo to struggle to keep up. The reason I don't think this is the issue, is that the power would have resolved itself to handle one speaker, vs powering the 4 speakers, when you did your fade/balance adjustment test.
I hope this helps.

Note: There is a factory amplifier mounded beneath the factory head unit. The wiring harness will not interface with the factory harness connection the stock amp and head unit. Remove BOTH the head unit and the amp (extremely easy.) The new harness will connect to the two harnesses connected to the bottom of the factory amp. Remove the factory mounting brackets from the factory head unit, you will attache them to the new unit and install it just as the old one was. It was surprisingly clean and easy.

As far as install. I had a friend install mine and put together the wiring harness.
I’m sure you could find somewhere locally that would install it if you purchased everything!
Good luck!
You’re welcome, happy to help man.
Yea exactly. So what the wiring harness does is allow you to use stock wiring connectors. It is just a set of pigtail wires with the stock OEM connectors on one end. This allows you to wire it up with the head-unit’s wiring harness. The company selling the wiring harness has already figured out which wires are which for you on the car side and so all you’ll need to do is wire up between the two harnesses.
From what I remember it was all correct in color, but a wiring diagram is included just in case that tells you which wire does what. Once you match the wires up it will looks like so:
Car / OEM Radio Connector (female plug) -> Wiring Harness connector (male plug) -> Splice (between both wiring harnesses) -> head unit connector
Hope that makes sense!

You might need a different harness if you have the JBL package. Let me know and I’ll link it.
This guide on TN has pictures and the stock wiring diagram if you want to forgo the additional harness: https://www.toyotanation.com/threads/how-to-replace-toyota-camry-speakers.250962/
Skip down the page to “Get the factory radio out”, after the speaker stuff.
SiriusXM SXV300 Connect Vehicle Tuner - you will need this to retain XM. Sometimes XM gives them away for free with a new subscription or to existing subs.
Do yourself a favor and get a reverse harness set from something like Metra. It'll break out the connections into bare wires in fairly standard color coding. Yellow is hot +12V, Red is switched +12V, Black is Ground, Blue is amp +12V, etc.
You'll need a few harnesses (USB, Antenna, AUX, Toyota/Subaru HU, a faceplate adapter since the Toyota/Subaru Double-DIN is 200mm and generics are 180mm, and you should probably invest in the 2GB model which is $354 + 81.58 shipping if you're in the US.
Amazon links to the various harnesses/adapters:
For the reversing camera, you have to splice into a few wires - one to get the reverse gear signal, ground, and acc power. The video in will be one of the wires on the HU harness unless my memory fails. Which reminds me - double-check those harness/adapter parts before ordering, I'm basing this all on memory.
