My puppy kept knocking over her water bowl in the crate so I got a bowl that attaches to the side of the crate. You can put it as high or as low as you want. This one is $8.84 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MD3NLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_F521APYNTY75RYZWSDD4
definitely agree that the ferret ball is not a good idea! their little spines are really not meant to move like that. she definitely sounds bored - my babies totally destroy my carpet in the "ferret room" if i'm not in there with them, but the second i go hang out with them they stop being destructive and just want to play/be around me. these are the bowls i use that clip on to the cage and they've been really helpful with spillage.
I would definitely add some more hammocks like theBusinessFerret said. Also, you can get rid of the bedding and the water bottle. Bedding is messy and many ferrets try to eat it, which could cause blockages. Fleece blankets seem to be the universal favorite among the fuzzies, just get some yards of fleece for cheap. Walmart sells 1.5 yd precut fleece blankets for a couple dollars. They work great!
As for the water bottle, it doesn’t give them enough hydration. Because of this, they often become impatient and bite the spout, damaging their teeth. A better option would be Midwest Snappy Bowls, they attach to the cage and lock on so they can’t flip them or drag them around. If you’re worried about them digging the water out, some do and some don’t, just attach the bowl a little higher up on the bars so they stand on their hind legs to drink.
I can’t tell if the ramps are wire, but if they are they NEED ramp covers. They are really easy to make, even if you can’t sew! Friendly Neighborhood Ferrets has a Youtube video on Making No Sew Ramp Covers. Any exposed wire hurts their feet and will cause irritation and likely bumble foot. Even if not wired, it’s still a good idea to cover them so they can easily grip and climb up. Plus, it all looks so comfy with the fleece and covers all done! :D
I found these bowls for pet food just randomly searching through Amazon one day and thought it would make a nice chalk bowl and wanted to share with you fellas. The one I got is the 4 cup size. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000MD3NLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PXxYDb12A5GV5
Mine would do this lol I started using these and haven’t had any problems. It attaches to the cage and is really secure so they can’t knock it over. As for digging, I attached it higher in the cage bars so they have to stand in their hind legs a bit to drink from it.
I would just get some bowls that attached to the cage bars, like Midwest Snappy Bowls, and then raise it up so they have to stand on their back legs to get it. You can do this with their water bowl too if they like to dig that out.
Snappy fit bowls. I got them for super cheap on Amazon. No spills, and I have it at a height where my bun can't dig anything out. Here is a link to it.
I also use puzzles for feeding time, which helps cut down messes greatly.
The Midwest Snappy Bowls on Amazon are metal so that should help with that. They also latch right into the cage so they can’t flip it either->> https://www.amazon.com/MidWwest-Homes-Pets-Snapy-Stainless/dp/B000MD3NLS I get the struggle, mine love to chew everything! Hope this helps :)
Bowls are much much much better for ferrets. I use the Midwest Snappy Bowls on Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/MidWwest-Homes-Pets-Snapy-Stainless/dp/B000MD3NLS ). You can use them for food and water. It attaches to the cage so they can’t flip it. And if you find out that yours like to dig in the water just attach it a little bit higher up so they can’t. I hope this helps! :)
We have the Snap'y Fit, the clip is all metal and the bowl lip gets snapped in to the double ring 'clip'. It's actually pretty difficult for even me to remove, requires a lot of force in a specific outward direction.
We have a Snap'y fit which is way more secure than the hoop. The lip of the bowl literally snaps into the semi-circle and it is actually a huge pain to get out, haha. You have to tug directly out super hard, pushing down/up doesn't do much.
You'll have to get bigger bowls. https://www.amazon.com/MidWwest-Homes-Pets-Snapy-Stainless/dp/B000MD3NLS/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=MidWest+Homes+for+Pets+Snap%27y+Fit+Stainless+Steel+Food+Bowl+%2F+Pet+Bowl%2C+10+oz.+for+Dogs%2C+Cats%2C+Small+Animals&qid=1626624589&sr=8-1
Try this bigger size. I use the smaller one with my girls and they like it, but if she's having trouble buy the bigger one I guess.
I'm using this metal version and have had no problems with it.
Have you tried one of these styles by chance? one & two. They’re the only style that works for my fuzzies, and I only fill them about half way so that if they feel like digging in their water, it’s only a minimal amount that ends up on the bottom of the cage.
I’ve kind of just accepted that they’ll dig in their water dishes, it’s impossible to stop them completely lol at least with the ones I linked they can’t tip them over
Ugh this is so sad, I don’t understand how they weren’t watching their dog :(
I’m glad she is okay! The barrier should help! As for rehabbing her, I kind of my experience? One of my girls Jazz needed bladder stone surgery and was on bed rest for two weeks. Does she have pain meds she needs to take? For that, I either made kibble soup, mixed it in with egg, or used Emeraid IC Carnivore. Make sure to only mix the medicine in with a little bit of these things, so that you can ensure she’ll eat all of it. Afterwards, you can put the rest in the cage for her to graze on. You’re going to want to have her in a single level cage, remove any ramps so she can’t climb and hurt her paw more. Fill the bottom with blankets and little cat hides. I personally didn’t worry about a litter box when rehabbing my love. She chose a corner and stuck with that one. I had a towel or a puppy pad/newspaper on that side to help her make the distinction.
Like puppy said, ferrets are very social and love their friends. What I did was have daily meetups where I would allow my other ferrets to come and see/sniff her through her rehab cage. Then, after the first week, I allowed then to stand next to each other and walk around each other. If she’s anything like my girl, she will try to sneak playtime. But she cannot, not until the vet says she can be off of cage rest. Jazz did get a little depressed, but these meet ups really helped her. You should have seen the playtime when she was all healed up, so happy to see her 5 siblings!
*side note: That cage has exposed wire of I remember correctly. Make sure to cover this, both the floors and ramps, or it can damage their feet. For the floor, you can use cardboard, then just cover it up with fleece. The ramps you can make no sew ramp covers easily, Friendly Neighbourhood Ferrets on Youtube has a tutorial on exactly how to! Also, if you have a water bottle for them, chuck it. Water bottles have been known to chip their teeth and not give them enough hydration. A water bowl is best, I love Midwest Snappy Bowls.

I like the Midwest Snappy Bowls, they’re awesome! Definitely recommend switching, as well as chipping their teeth, ferrets cannot get enough hydration from a bottle. Also, make sure all exposed wire is cover, from the floors and the ramps, to protect their paws. Coroplast works great for floors, it’s cheap, waterproof and easy to clean. Then you can get cheap yards of fleece for them to snuggle in, Walmart has some of these.

Look at his tail floof!!!! So precious omg!
I’m not sure if this was just the travel cage from a pet store or not, but figured I’d touch on some points. Like there’s said wood shavings are not good as they create a lot of dust which can hurt their respiratory symptoms. Some also have very strong scents which can hurt them also. So blankets are the best and a lot cheaper anyway. I use fleece as it’s the most common ferret use blanket. Ferrets have a tendency to chew especially when younger, so using tough denim will help to ensure they don’t chew through and eat it. I would just get some old thick jeans from a thrift store. As for the water bottle, those actually aren’t good for ferrets either. It can damage their teeth as ferrets like to chew on the metal when they get impatient for water. The bottle also doesn’t allow for enough water to get out to fully hydrate them. I would get water bowls that attach to the cage, like these. The cage itself isn’t ideal, many ferrets have figured out how to open those types. The best cage without a doubt is a Ferret Nation, either a Single Level or a Double Level. If you don’t already have one, I would start saving to get it. I know it’s expensive, I have two and an add on lol. You could look and ask local ferret shelters if they have any for sale, or check Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. Feel free to ask me any questions you may have, ferrets are complex creatures and finding information on them can be hard. I have a Ferret Info Guide with tons of tips and tricks, links and information on ferrets.
Mine used to lean back like that to drink from their water dish. It’s so cute😂
Like the other comment said, I would get rid of the water bottle. They have been known to hurt ferret teeth, as well as they don’t offer enough hydration. Some great water bowls I like are the Midwest Snappy Bowls. They attach to the cage so there will be no knocking it over, and you can attach it higher if your ferret likes to dig. You could even get a heavy ceramic dish if your ferret isn’t interested in digging the water.
I use Midwest Snappy Bowls and they work really well. Like already said, be sure to raise it higher on the bars.
Midwest Snappy Bowls on Amazon is what I use-> https://www.amazon.com/MidWwest-Homes-Pets-Snapy-Stainless/dp/B000MD3NLS
