I've been using this with good results, it is super strong/minty.
I was about to comment peppermint spray, because I use this one indoors, but for camping... I can't think of one that isn't smelly, but I do prefer Picaridin lotions over sprays with Deet. If you haven't tried it yet, it might be worth a smell
Rats are allergic to pepperment it makes their noses swell shut Pepperment Spray. I use a different brand of essential oil that isn't working these days (probably 3rd party sellers diluting with cheaper oils).
Keep the smell as strong as you can handle it for 30 days then apply once a week for 6 weeks then intermittently as needed.
