There are others out there. I'm not too sure how they all compare, but I've got one of the big boy versions of this one and like it.
I would recommend the monoprice mini. It has a comparably small print bed (12cm×12cm×12cm) but it's resolution is fairly decent. I have had mine for a few years now and it's still chugging. Also it's only $180 or so on Amazon right now. https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Assembled-Filament-Preloaded-Printable/dp/B07515FG7P
The one I used for this was the Monoprice Select Mini V1 (Not sold anymore, the V2 is out instead), it’s a cheap first 3D printer - Got mine for around £100 off Amazon.
If you want only small pieces and are willing to learn 3D modelling, you could buy a cheap 3D printer like the monoprice select mini. However, I'd say just use any substitute parts early on and worry about appropriate pieces when you get the design nailed down... then maybe get the pieces modeled and the 3D printer when you need a nice demo copy made.
Also check out places like shapeways, thingiverse, meeplesource, the game crafter, print and play productions, and used thrift games that might have parts to use (or sales - Amazon for Queen Games and other publishers have occasional deep discounts). Some might do what you want, some might not - board game bits tend to be preset pens while others are bring your own 3D models.
Oh, and check out Arcknight fit clear plastic standees (like paper minis or chipboard standees but on clear plastic and full color front/back prints)... oh, and toy store plastic figures.
I started thinking this way awhile ago and have saved SO MUCH!! One thing that helped take it even farther was a 3d printer (I got this one for 120 bucks on Prime day last year) to make the stupid little bits that cost a small fortune.
I had one of the clips that holds the drum in your washing machine snap. half an hour later a replacement was printing and saved enough time and headache that the printer was worth it lol.
Will the 120mm plate be big enough? I thought someone said I needed bigger than that. Is the caliburn compatible with katana mags or will I need an adapter? Thanks for the help slug! Edit: this is it right? https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Select-Printer-Heated-Filament/dp/B07515FG7P edit 2: also how many pounds/kilograms of pla do I need?
Not OP, but I originally got a Monoprice Select Mini V2 printer when I wanted to mess around with printing. It's ~$190 new, makes some pretty good quality prints for its price point, and works out of the box. I have a friend that told me it does have some issues that may come up with long term use (which can be fixed), but I had a great time with it before I upgraded to a better printer. If you have any questions about it, I'd be happy to answer them.
Edit: Here's a link to the manufacturer's website for more info. It can also be found on Amazon.
You can buy fully assembled smaller ones for 200$. (Well, probably flat packed, but still way easier than building yourself.)
You can get 3D printers for pretty damn cheap now. An entry level printer is cheaper than some normal printers I've bought
Oh shit, I was browsing on my phone and assumed it was this one Which is the one I have.
