That's interesting. I read this book about the script writing business in Hollywood and damned if I can't remember what it is, but they described the particular process of making action films as one where you needed to be able to write these "whammy" scenes where some absurd over the top action piece would occur. There were just some people that could do it and some that couldn't so IIRC they would hand off the scripts sometimes with "whammy" as a placeholder for such a scene in it.
Edit: Ah, I finally found it. It's hard to track down via the title.
