I've bought 2 of these grow light strips from Amazon and used command strips to stick them to the bottom of my shelves to give my plants some healthy light! It has a timer on it too. I'm about to buy another one because it works well!
My plants ARE next to a window but sometimes we go without sun especially in the winter (I'm in North Carolina, USA) but I still have the option to provide light when the day decides not to! I hope this helps!
These are these ones I have
I live in Michigan, so I know how you feel :) I use grow lights, there are cheap ones on Amazon. Personally I like these because they stick with double sided tape provided: Mosthink LED Plant Grow Light... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PJJC8S?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I also have a humidifier for myself that I use in the winter. There’s no substitution for that, but if you aren’t a fan of that idea, you can minimize the harm by keeping the plants grouped together, away from drafty windows and heat vents.
Just a note though — spider mites (common plant pest) love dry air. A humidifier Will help combat those in the winter too.
Also, plants generally need less water in the winter, so cut back on that to avoid root rot.
And sorry - to answer the questions - I do have a hydrometer but it’s inside my greenhouse cabinet currently. I could order another one (or three!).
The grow lights are (supposedly) full spectrum, 10W each. They are Mosthink LED strip lights from Amazon.

Not sure whether they’ll cut it or not. I will try the smartphone app and see what I get there!!!
Thanks again for all of the tips! So appreciative!
there's a bunch of options similar to this and in this price range, if that works. These lights are still nowhere near as bright as the actual sun, even when you place them just a few inches away from the plant, but you should see much better growth with one.

These are the ones I have. They have a sticky back and small enough they would be hidden by the stand. I also have a different set that is two separate lights. The bendy lights separate lights have burned some leaves but the strips have a softer light. First time posting, I took a picture but not sure how to do that.
I have a LED plant light that comes with two strips, is it a better idea to put both strips in one shelf or one strip in two shelves and fit more plants inside? this is the one I have and it says its 7.5W, 48 LED chips for each bar and I think 15W for both
If installing diagonally in the 1 ft shelf, I'd check out 13-16 inch LED lights like these Mosthink or other brands.

I agree with the other person who commented. If it’s in a bathroom with no natural light (or very little) consider getting an LED grow light to put above it! I’ve been using these white LED lights for 6 months and all of my plants are thriving. They have a strong sticker on the back, so they can be mounted to a wall, ceiling or shelf
Hi! I am hoping to get some help with my Maidenhair Fern. I've had it approximately two months now, and since I've gotten it, the plant has been in a slow decline, and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
It is kept in an Ikea cabinet I've converted to a greenhouse. The humidity stays at around 90, maybe a little higher, and it's soil is always damp. I reported it when I bought it into a 4.5 inches wide and 4 inches tall ceramic pot with a drainage. The top leafs sit about 6 inches below a Mosthink LED Plant Grow Light Strip (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PJJC8S/ref=cm\_sw\_r\_apan\_glt\_fabc\_JRZEQTYE2D1FMCNYAME9?\_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) turned to the lowest setting (25%) and covered in cheese cloth to diffuse the light, as pictured.
I have today noticed fungus gnats on some of the plants in the cabinet.
Thank you in advance for your help!
I’ve been using these for the past 6 months and my plants are thriving! There’s a very strong sticker strip on the back, so I was able to put them inside my plant shelf and my IKEA mini greenhouse. I used zip ties to hide the cables behind the shelf, so they aren’t as noticeable. Each package comes with 2 mountable light strips that plug in to one outlet each
I use these for my moonstone and it’s kept it’s pretty pink sun stressing and the new leaves are more compact than the ones it had grown at the greenhouse so I definitely recommend them :) Mosthink LED Plant Grow Light Strips Full Spectrum for Indoor Plants with Auto ON / Off Timer, 48 LEDs / 4 Dimmable Levels, Sunlike Grow Lamp for Hydroponics Succulent, Two Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PJJC8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_KMP7DPPG4AZ8AA3XYMJ4
I have bad light in my home and I mounted some thin led strip lights to the inside/ceiling bit of my window recess; it made a HUGE difference (and bonus, in the dark winter, it makes the window look sunny and helps ME, lol).
Edit: These are the lights I have in my window.
Hi, I am late to this party but my grow lights absolutely suck and I really need to get better ones - how do you know of aight is “rated for growing”? You mentioned sunblaster brand lights in one of your other comments, is it safe to assume any lights from them are rated?
these are the ones I have now and they kept my plants alive through a NE winter at least but the growth has been really pathetic
The lights I purchased on Amazon came with sticky strips, but agreed on the command idea! Here’s a link to the lights: Mosthink LED Plant Grow Light Strips Full Spectrum for Indoor Plants with Auto ON / Off Timer, 48 LEDs / 4 Dimmable Levels, Sunlike Grow Lamp for Hydroponics Succulent, Two Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PJJC8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_1RR6ZWJAXE0Q86A88Y88?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I know im like way WAY late but do you think these would cut it? grow lights im using currently as these are what I bought because I didn’t know what else to get but am just worried
1) Are you also doing PF Tek? Thats where jars would come into play and I would definitely punch 3 or 4 holes in the top for that. If you're talking about putting holes in the UB bags, then I would cut extra holes only if you puncture the bag with the syringe as the needle hole wont be big enough for air exchange. I usually take a scissor about an inch to an inch and a half triangle off the top corner of the bag, incoculate through that bigger hole, then tape it up with micropore tape. That one cut is big enough for gas exchange.
2) From what i read, lights are definitely important. LED lights are definitely fine, here is a link to one I recently bought.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082PJJC8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
There are better lights out there, depending on your setup. I've been seeing a lot of stuff online that blue light may actually be the best but, i cant verify that just yet.
3) Honestly, both will work just fine. I doubt you'd see any significant different betweem the bags.
Tough break on the dimensions. Here's a set of lights that will fit. In that kind of a space you're not gonna be able to fit anything with real power. So these should provide supplement for plants that can handle a low or medium light situation, assuming there's already some natural light in your kitchen. But you'd have to see how it goes with anything that's really sun loving.
I got these ones on Amazon: Mosthink LED Plant Grow Light Strips Full Spectrum for Indoor Plants with Auto ON & Off Timer,48 LEDs / 4 Dimmable Levels,20W Sunlike Grow Lamp for House Garden Hydroponics Succulent, Two Pack https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082PJJC8S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_IkNEFb3YHCTNF
Absolutely! Just a heads up that the first set I received was not functional, but Amazon returns is pretty flexible. https://www.amazon.com/Mosthink-Spectrum-Dimmable-Hydroponics-Succulent/dp/B082PJJC8S

Now it has 3 leaves. Seems like it's enough light for it by the way it's responding.

So I was gonna use a seedling starter tray with a lid. Would this light on top be enough?
Howdy. This is probably not enough light. Blurple lights are crap. If you’re still in the window to return it, return it and pick up a white full spectrum in the same style (but your best bet is to get a panel or led tube style growlights). Not only is colored light unmeasurable with light meters (unless you have a 300$ par meter), plants need all spectrums of light, not just blue and red. Since these lights are incredibly weak, you need to be like 4-5 inches from the plant if that, and they might still struggle. When I say from the plant, I mean directly from the top of the leaf, not the container, and this is only for the guys directly below it because these thing bulbs don’t shine off to the side and can really only light something straight below. Anything to the right or left of them is in the dark. The guys in the plastic tubs to the left are getting no light. The string of hearts and other stringy looking guy are getting the most light.
Something like this will cover the most area and be most efficient for adult plants. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07QRQQ7B4 It will probably be too strong and too close to your seedlings in the pic so you can go the route of those led strips (4-6 strips in this style https://www.amazon.com/Mosthink-Spectrum-Dimmable-Hydroponics-Succulent/dp/B082PJJC8S/) or even the route of another one of these 3 pronged lamps, but get white and get 2 of them to adequately cover the area. Best of luck.

These lights are pretty cheap, although they might not seem that good, they actually started to get my pinguicula agnata red leaf to show color.

This one is a bit pricy at 30, without the fixture but will be more than enough for a capensis

My new apt gets way less sunlight than my old apt and the plants started to suffer. Got some broad spectrum LED bars w/ self timers and rigged a light fixture @ the hardware store.
Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082PJJC8S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Process: Got 1" x 2" wood beam cut to the length of the shelving unit, painted it w/ a paint sample that matches the shelving unit color, attached the LED light bars (they come with screws and screw holes as well as zip ties), attached the fixture to the wall w/metal bracket & screws (into a stud of course), put a hook into the same stud higher up and suspended the far end of the light fixture with steel cable and another hook.
The bébés are coming back to their original health now!
