Realme 7 won't be compatible with US carriers, so I wouldn't recommend it.
I'd recommend Moto G Power over G Fast and 5.3. You'll likely want at least 4 gb of ram for gaming, so G Fast isn't a good option. Nokia 5.3 on paper is ok, but recent Nokia phones can be a bit glitchy in the software department. It also doesn't really offer a standout feature, while Moto G Power at least offers excellent battery life.
>waiting for Moto G8
There technically isn't going to be a "Moto G8" in the US, Moto dropped the number scheme for US marketing so the "G8" would be Moto G Power, "G8 Plus/Pro" would be G Stylus, etc.
>Better to get a phone now or should I wait?
It's your personal preference. If you have any interest in 5G I'd say wait, 5G phones will likely be in your price range before June. There should be some decent deals this Black Friday so that may also be worth waiting for.
>Stick to budget phones or spend more and try to get 4+ years
It's hard to bank on more than 3 years for a phone regardless of price. I suppose it depends on how you use the phone and what you're willing to put up with as it inevitably degrades.
>If I end up wanting the Pixel 4a do I need to get it ASAP for the pre-order price?
I don't think any store is offering a significant pre-order bonus though I could be wrong (standard price is $350).
All that being said, I think Pixel 4a would be a good fit for you unless you're a heavy screen-on time user, then you might want to go with Moto G Power or wait to see if Pixel 4a 5G has a significantly bigger battery (though it's expected to be $500).
if you care nothing about camera, Motorola has good budget offerings.
$250 new, but you can usually get an 'amazon warehouse' in 'very good' condition for around $200.
the camera isn't garbage but its not really good like an iphone.
you could always get a newer iphone on swappa too. can probably get a decent used iphone 8 around $200.
No, I can't figure out what generation it is, but it's the 2020 model (the good one) Moto G Power | 3-Day Battery1 | Unlocked | Made for US by Motorola | 4/64GB | 16MP Camera | 2020 | Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084D89DBF/ref=cm_sw_r_awdo_navT_g_DHKXCH6RK4NKHNQWHHBH I'd buy it again in a heartbeat
Comes up at $219 for me on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084D89DBF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_CM9F4M0B7W8TN2BEPZZK
I wouldn't worry too much about the processor, it handles all daily tasks perfectly fine and even most gaming. I installed GTA san andrea and call of duty mobile and was surprised at how well it handles both games. Good luck🤞
Okay so I did the same thing as you. I bought a moto g power 2020 from amazon, was a used but immediately returned & unused phone.
Mine has just the triangle, no LTE. Battery percentage is on the right.
I stumbled on this thread trying to understand the media controls, and such because google search results have been very confusing.
I'm getting that some people on android 11 can access media controls on the lock screen without having to swipe down twice?
>The controls are also on the lockscreen.
If so, how? I hate the media controls being hidden, I just want to be able to play/pause + back/skip and such with just a simple button on the lockscreen, like I had with all previous android versions I've used.
G9 power is the European version. It's not compatible with a lot of the cell phone towers in America and your coverage is going to be bad and you're not going to have good signal speeds and you're going to disconnect in a lot of places where everyone else is supposed to have coverage. Return it please. Do yourself a favor.
Besides, the United States version is much better anyway. And faster too. And it's compatible with everything here.
Don't get the 2021 version of the Moto G power. This year's is a downgrade in every way they even downgraded the CPU.
Get this
https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF?th=1&psc=1
It's the american version..
Moto G Power is the best pick for a phone under $250 with good battery life. Currently it's $180 and it's broadly compatible with all US carriers.
>Despite my moral reservations about Chinese products, I ended up purchasing an extremely low end Nokia and it sucks
Nokia (HMD Global) is based in Finland.
Thoughts on Moto G Power? I had a Moto 3g before and it was fine just slow. This has the snap 665 processor, 16MP front camera, macro lens (which I'm finding a potentially very useful feature), 5000MaH battery, fast charging, and an IPS display for the same price as the TCL 10L. https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF
Moto G Power for around $220 (best battery life) or Pixel 4a for $350 (best camera). Pixel 4a has other advantages like speed, oled screen, and guaranteed OS/security updates. G Power has expandable storage and a bigger screen.
If you aren't in a hurry, we're getting close to black friday sales so it may be worth it to wait.
I tried getting the G Power from Motorola's site, but they were out. I ordered it from amazon at this link. I'm hoping that's the right one. It says it's unlocked.

Used phones are a gamble with battery life given that usage always degrades the battery. For $200, you might be able to find a Galaxy S9 or Pixel 3 on Swappa or Ebay, though maybe not in great condition.
For $230, you can get a new Moto G Power. Excellent battery life, decent camera outside of low light scenes, not the quickest phone but can manage your app usage well enough.
You get it with or without Alexa BS on it. I got it without. I got it from Amazon Warehouse Deals for $172.99 in "Used - Acceptable" condition. Not a scratch on it. The box was just open. I've been playing with it on wfi for a couple of days while I wait on my Sim, to make sure it has no issues.
Moto G Power | 3-Day Battery1 | Unlocked | Made for US by Motorola | 4/64GB | 16MP Camera | 2020 | Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084D89DBF/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_ld0CFbCM6GW4F
I bought it from Amazon:
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B084D89DBF/
Price went up $20, seems to ebb and flow. When I activated I couldn't do via the website or phone because I needed a new SIM. Had to take it to a store to activate and buy a SIM for $10. My co-worker bought the phone right after me and I'm pretty sure he didn't need to activate in store though.
On the lower end: Moto G Power currently on sale for $230. It's a decent phone with a big battery, a headphone jack, and minimal bloat. It's generally for people who don't game at a high level or heavily multitask. The biggest downside is it won't get an OS update past Android 11 and security updates will probably be sporadic. Edit: I should also mention it doesn't have NFC.
On the upper end of things: OnePlus 8 for $700 (glacial green only). Not stock Android but stock fans seem to not mind (or even prefer) OxygenOS. Battery life won't be as good as G Power but it's faster/nicer and has a better updates policy (though no headphone jack).
>customizable phone around the 6 inch size with a decent enough battery life to get me through the day, $300 or less, good camera
Moto G Power 2020 might work for you. It's not the fastest, but it has excellent battery life and a decent camera. By comparison, Pixel 4a is faster, smaller, has a better camera, and worse battery life. 4a also gets better OS/security support.
If you prefer used/refurbished, Galaxy S10+ is a good option under $300. It's much faster than G Power with better battery life than Pixel 4a. Cameras are pretty good too.
>any given 1080p screen, with LCD being acceptable
Moto G Power 2020 currently $200 fits and it has a nice 5000 mAh battery.
DailySteals has new condition Pixel 3's for $169 with promo code DSGPXLS. B&H has a similar offer.
Moto G Power would be fine for your usage. I recommend the 2020 version over the 2021 model, as the 2021 model's specs are equal to or lower than the currently cheaper 2020 version.
A $300 alternative is OnePlus Nord N10 5G, which compared to G Power exchanges some battery life for a quicker processor, more ram, and more storage.
>I don't know where to start in learning about them.
As a starting point I find it helpful to focus on the cpu (aka SoC) first, as the rest of the phone is built around the capabilities of the cpu. Snapdragon 800 series is top tier, 700 is upper middle, 600 lower middle, and 400 is low/budget tier.
As for sources, GSM Arena is good for specs comparisons and reviews. Phone Arena is similar but less comprehensive and more US focused.
>I saw some phones can charge on a landing pad instead of plugging in, how common is this?
Wireless charging. It's common for new phones $600 and up, with an occasional entry in the ~$450-600 range.
>I would like to spend less than $150, but if that's too little I have some stimulus check left over.
Devices under $150 typically aren't great unless you go for used/refurbished models. Best new condition phone I can see closest to that with a better camera is Pixel 3 for $220. It's an older phone from 2018, but it's also a former top-end device so it's still decent for the price. It's also relatively small. Battery life isn't good though.
If you want multi-day battery life, Moto G Power 2020 is probably ideal for ~$200. It's bigger than g5+, though it's a much more modest upgrade than Pixel 3. On a side note, Moto G Power 2021 is mostly a downgrade from 2020, so it's only worth it if 2020 goes out of stock.
Country?
If you're in the US, Moto G Power 2020 fits the bill. 1080p screen, same battery, better chipset, decent camera outside of low-light situations. G Power 2021 offers no real improvements over 2020 except maybe a marginally better main camera.
OnePlus 7T ($350). 90hz amoled display with Snapdragon 855, but battery life is just average.
OnePlus Nord N10 5G ($300). 90hz lcd display with 5G, micro sd slot, headphone jack, and a bigger battery than 7T. SD 690 isn't as quick as SD 855 though.
Moto G Power, preferably 2020 model (~$215). If you need a phone for just the basics this is the one to get. It's not the snappiest phone but it can manage most tasks well enough and the battery life is great.
You won't have a good experience with that phone. Missing too many bands, doesn't have volte (which will eventually be required to connect to tmobiles network sometime in 2021)
Here's some other motorola alternatives that are made for the US market and will work
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1595563-REG/moto_pafv0001us_moto_g7_plus_64gb.html

Thanks! I looked into the MotoG Power(https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF) Its a solid deal for 179$. If the camera can be compared to my existing Honor 8, i am good. My usage is kind of similar to yours, i will add this to the list. My older phone before Honor 8 was a Moto Defy, a solid phone - abused it a lot and worked great.
Moto G Power is probably the best choice under $200 right now. Moto G Stylus is also $200, basically the same device with a smaller battery and more internal storage.
Moto G Power should fit your needs (G8 Power is the international version that's not compatible with Verizon). I wish I could recommend some alternatives just to give you some choices but there aren't many good ones around ~$200.
Moto G Stylus is ~$250. It has a smaller battery than G Power but slightly better camera and more storage but it's basically the same phone just with a stylus.
How much are you looking to spend?
If you want a really good camera, you may want to consider used/refurbished flagship phones, particularly the Google Pixel series (note that Pixel 1 no longer receives updates).
If you don't want to go that route, the standard lower-midrange phone I recommend is Moto G Power unless you need NFC which it lacks (so it can't use Google Pay in stores).
I can vouch for Moto G Power, currently on sale at best buy and amazon. The battery life is no joke and Moto Actions are nice. Minimal software bloat too.
If you decide to go with A50, try to get either an unlocked US version (SM-A505U) or a LATAM variant (SM-A505G, SM-A505G/DS, or SM-A505GT/DS) with compatible US LTE bands/frequencies. An unlocked Canadian variant (SM-A505W) would also work.
Agreed Amazon and Walmart I have been returning when things don't work out. Right now I'm leaning towards this one: https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF/ just want to read everything first.
>Motorola G Power 2020 unlocked
thanks u/JessiL85 I think that is a winner way cheaper then the other one I found it on Amazon for about $200 https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF/ Thansk !
Are you eligible for any carrier deals? Might be able to find something good if you are.
If you'd prefer to stick with Samsung, Galaxy A32 5G would be an upgrade (although the screen is rather cheap looking). Faster than A20, better cameras, bigger battery.
Moto G Power 2020 would be a modest upgrade with a better screen than A32 5G. It lacks NFC however, and it has poor OS/security update support.
Or you could go used/refurbished. Refurbished Galaxy S10 or S10e are easy to get at $250 or less in excellent condition.
You sure that's the global model? The US model is single sim and that's what's listed.
Moto G Power, OnePlus Nord N200, or TCL 20S are $250 or less.
Alternatively, refurbished Pixel 3a XL is around $180 and refurbished S10e is around $220.
so this is what I want? https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B084D89DBF/ref=cbw_us_ca_dp_narx_gl_wireless_web?th=1

also, do you think it's the best price I can get it for?
Moto G Power 2020 is a bit smaller with some better specs than Nokia 5.4 (though heavier due to bigger battery).
Alternatively, LG G7 ThinQ if you're looking for an actual hardware upgrade from XZ1. I don't think it's eligible for any more OS updates however (I think the T-Mobile model LM-G710TM got Android 10 and unlocked did not).
Moto G Power 2020 $180. Battery isn't user replaceable but its battery life is excellent, especially if you just leave battery saver mode on all the time.
I would say spend $30 more and get the Moto G power 2020.

Mint Mobile doesn't keep their public-facing phone database up to date. I can guarantee the USA Moto G Power 2020 is compatible with their service.
Motorola g power you can pick up new for close to 150.
https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF/
Moto G Power is $180, seems like it would be a huge upgrade over the Razr M. The next best thing would be either Pixel 4a or Galaxy A51 5G both at $350.
Depends on budget but Moto G Power on the lower end, A71 5G in the middle, and LG V60 on the upper-end (note that there's no unlocked V60 in the US, only carrier models).
Moto G Power is slightly above $200 but easy to recommend.
If $200 is a hard limit, a couple alternatives would be Nokia 5.3 and Moto G Fast. On paper Nokia 5.3 isn't bad but recent Nokia phones tend to be kinda glitchy. It's also not available for Verizon. Moto G Fast is mostly a downgrade from G Power but they both have the same chipset so it's still a decent buy.
For the money you can't go wrong with the Moto G Power
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B084D89DBF/ Trust me. Decent device. Huge battery. Motorola. You'll love it for the price.

A lower cost option I like to recommend is Moto G Power. It won't have strong update support but it otherwise fits your needs.
A $500 alternative would be Pixel 4a 5G. It'll have strong update support and is all-around better than G Power other than battery life. It also has a headphone jack. The main problem with it from your perspective might be replacing the battery, as Pixels tend to be tricky to take apart. No teardown of 4a 5G yet, but it should be similar to 4a.
>Also I probably wont be buying until January - March next year.
You might want to come back around that time for new recommendations.
S20 FE is the best value pick for a top-end phone (at $600), S10+ would be an alternative with a headphone jack. Both have good battery life, but considering S10+ is over a year old, current US pricing for one isn't very good.
If you don't need a high-end phone, Moto G Power is a decent lower mid-range phone with better battery life that's still an upgrade over Moto Z Play. Motorola One 5G is also a decent value pick that would be an upgrade over Moto G Power but availability is limited as it's carrier-exclusive to AT&T (Verizon model releases later this month).
If you care about US warranty/support, Moto G Power is probably the best value pick, plus it works on every US carrier if you ever decide to change.
Motorola One Hyper is a faster phone with a full screen display (motorized pop-up selfie camera) but a smaller battery than G Power. AT&T/T-Mobile only.
Moto G9 Plus doesn't have a US warranty and unless you find a LATAM/Brazil variant it will have worse reception because the "international" variant is missing LTE bands 12 and 17 (important for AT&T).
Galaxy S20 FE is currently $600 for pre-order, works with all carriers. High-end internals with mid-range build quality (and no headphone jack despite what B&H says).
If you want to go the cheaper route, Moto G Power ($230) or G Fast ($170) are decent lower mid-range devices that work on all networks.
Normally when getting a new phone for a parent (or older person in general), I would recommend you stick to what they're used to which is Samsung in this case. However, any new Samsung will still be quite different since Galaxy S5 is relatively old and that UI (TouchWiz) was retired in favor of One UI.
If you'd like to stick with Samsung anyway, Galaxy A51 5G is new and costs $499 (don't get unlocked version if she's on AT&T or Verizon, 5G isn't compatible). If you'd like something less costly, Moto G Power or Pixel 4a are good no-nonsense options too.
Verizon compatibility takes some good options off the table sadly. The $300-400 range is kinda sparse for that network.
Moto G Power is a good choice for battery life but may not meet your standard of quality (personally I think it's good for the price).
If camera matters at all Pixel 4a is the best option at $350, but the battery life is average.
For $500 Moto Edge is an option if you don't mind the waterfall display.
Hard to predict what black Friday will be like this year. I feel like this should be the year we see some great deals to unload overstocked products but I have no inside knowledge.
>AT&T is forcing me to upgrade
This is true but you still have some time to upgrade. February 2022 is the scheduled cutoff. If you wait til next year you might be able to snag a 5G phone in the $200-300 price range (just a guess based on trends).
Moto G Power is a little over your budget but probably worth it as long as you don't need NFC. It's already been on sale once, so another discount to $230 or lower seems likely in the near future.
>Curious if a new 2020 budget phone would last longer than a used higher end older phone (2018ish)?
Always a tricky question. A used flagship phone would likely be better today but might be worse in the long run due to outdated OS or degraded battery.
Moto G Power. Minimal bloat, big battery, handy Moto Actions, and decent specs for the price. I'm a little biased towards it, I got one for my mom too. Works on all networks.
A cheaper alternative would be Nokia 5.3. Zero bloat as it's an Android One phone and similar specs compared to G Power, but with a smaller battery and lower resolution screen. AT&T/T-Mobile networks only, no Verizon or Sprint support.
Moto G power seems to fit all your requirements, although I'm not 100% sure about the unlocked bootloader. I'm sure it is because Motorola always unlocks it. https://www.amazon.com/Power-Battery1-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera/dp/B084D89DBF
Moto G Power is $230, probably the easiest thing to point to as a successor in this price range. It's a fair bit larger than G5 Plus though, dunno if that matters to you.
> to not pay full MSRP
Keep an eye on r/androiddeals (and I'd recommend sticking with either eBay or Amazon as a vendor).
A quick search there turned up this : https://www.amazon.com/Power-Unlocked-Motorola-Camera-Black/dp/B084D89DBF
Unless you really want the stylus from the Moto then I would buy the Moto G Power (Best Buy Amazon). It’s only $230 and has the same performance as the Stylus with a couple camera differences but it has a massive 5000 mAh battery so it will easily last all day and longer.
edit: Plus buying this from Best Buy or Amazon means the phone is unlocked and carrier bloatware free!
How much is it with the discount? it is $230 on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084D89DBF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
