I do this but also try to put the kids in long sleeves or pants whenever possible. Its a little easier on cool nights (upper midwest) of course, but offers almost double protection. I also purchased some yard incense that I think helps deter the mosquitoes a bit.

Edit to add: my doctor said no bug spray under 6 months old, only physical protection. I didn’t spray deet on clothes under 6 months. I did long sleeves/pants, or bug nets.
I get huge welts where I get bitten and they itch for months. In my experience, reduce sugar intake before camping (that includes alcohol). Take a B12 supplement a week before going camping and during. Use DEET based insect repellent. Reapply per instructions. You can also use Pyrethrin on your clothes but be aware that it is toxic to cats. We use sage on our campfire and mosquito incense sticks or coils at camp https://www.amazon.com/Murphys-Naturals-Mosquito-Repellent-Incense/dp/B074TRFZHG/ref=asc_df_B074TRFZHG/
If they get you anyway, use Benedryl Gel on the bites. Baking soda paste that I make with witch hazel and baking soda. There is also one of these that I have used with success as well. https://www.amazon.com/bite-Electronic-Cleared-Dermatologist-Swelling/dp/B07Y3X5JDZ/ref=sr_1_2_sspa
