My Half-Century by Anna Akhmatova. Awe-inspiring. That's all.
And There Was Light by Jacques Lusseyran. Exquisitely written. Lusseyran went blind as a child, became a core member of the youth French Resistance, was sent to Buchenwald & survived.
Gerald Durrell's books. Some of the few books that have made me literally laugh out loud, while still holding some very deep insights. The man was brilliant, self-depreciating, and a truly innovative zoologist. Plus, you get a completely different take on his brother Lawrence, whose work I also love.
Ely: Too Black, Too White by Ely Green. Fascinating story of a mixed-race man growing up in a small college town in Tennessee.
