I recently purchased this one:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KCK9W1K?psc=1
after doing enough research to become an expert in vacuum sealers, and I can highly recommend it.
Key features: it has built in bag roll storage (and cutter), and you don't have to hold it down while it's vacuuming. It also has a manual cancel switch if what you're vacuuming has a lot of juices.
It helps to put the bag on a tray, or elevate it so it is even with the machine. Approximately 1 inch off the counter.
We had a similar issue with ours, and that seemed to help. We've switched to the nesco when our foodsaver gave up the ghost two years ago. The new one is much better.
This one here. It's the pick from America's Test Kitchen as well. I just bought it a week ago. It's currently sitting at a very low price ($75).
I have been using this Nesco for over three years and have zero complaints. I keep it in the other room and just bring it out to seal stuff and return it. I purchased it because it was recommended by America’s Test Kitchens and I trust them a lot. esco Vacuum Sealer

Nesco vs-12. Been a great sealer and ranked pretty high too.
I got it for $112 and it was seen cheaper. Though it may take a while to get in stock.

I bought it and have been happy with it. I mostly seal meats and cheeses as well. You can use any bags that are no wider than 11". I've used generic bags from Amazon, Costco bags, and FoodSaver brand bags.
I’ve killed a few FoodSavers, but this Nesco hasn’t failed me. Double seals to boot!
I bought this one and it works exactly as expected. My mother used it recently and mentioned she liked it better than her cheaper one.

This one is great
I really like this NESCO vacuum sealer. I've used it countless times over the past year and a half. It has nice settings and different pressures and is easily cleanable.
I bought America's Test Kitchen's recommended one, and it's been great. You can use any brand of bags, but if the roll is too big it won't fit into the built-in slot in the machine. But that doesn't really matter, you can still use it.
I had this one. It worked great. u/Zippytiewassabi recommendation is good as well. If money is no object and if you have the space, I highly recommend a commercial-grade one. Keep in mind, whatever your choice is, make sure you clean it well after use. BTW, having a cryovac machine really prolongs the food's shelf life and saves space as well in your fridge and freezer. It's a great investment.

I actually just bought that exact vac sealer the other day, it's currently sitting at $80 on Amazon, time to pull the trigger!
94$ and well worth it.
This Nesco is great. Many options FoodSaver doesn’t have and is built like a tank. Also FoodSaver makes gusseted pleated bags you can but a turkey in.
I second the faux panda. The Nesco is great after three dead FoodSavers.
pretty sure they are 3.5m mylar bags
After three FoodSavers, I couldn’t be happier with this. Great pressure, double seals, and manual vacuum control.
I’ve killed three FoodSavers. Nesco for the win.
Not real sure how this is any better than the Nesco for $50 cheaper.
I’ve killed theee FoodSavers before I found this and couldn’t be happier. Many features and very well built.

Most vacuum sealers intended for home use are going to be external vacuum sealers, so you're going to have difficulty with liquids no matter what you do (though by "difficult", I don't mean "impossible"). But my biggest problem with external vacuum sealers are the air gaps that are frequently left around bones in meats (and thus result in freezer burn). It could just be that the external vacuum sealer I have from years ago is outdated and too weak. I don't know.
That said, I have done an inordinate amount of research on this and I understand that these are your best two options if you aren't willing to go the chamber sealer route:

i'm sure it'll be cheaper come Black Friday. if you can wait 3 months.
I have the nesco for $116 from amazon. it was rated really good for it's price and vacuum capabilities.
