broooo you are bad at technology
verify the connection is intermittent with a wired connection
pick up the phone and call them.
this isn't uncommon anywhere
Optimum does suck but they will come out
plus coax wired are spiderwebbed everywhere if you're living in a regular walk up. someone could have put a flower pot on the wire, or a rat bit it, or someone's hanging wind chimes off it. the wire going into my apartment was split half a dozen times over hundreds of feet of cable that crossed back and forth over the top and down the sides of half my block despite the distro block being 25 ft behind my place on an overhead data line.
once the signal strength is verified as consistent (they can check the history to make sure it's stable) you can bug them for a new modem.
also as with any cable internet company, it's a good idea to replace the shitty gateway they give you (which, btw is also transmitting an Optimum hotspot in addition to your wifi)
I got one of these modems used for $20, but $40 is a good price too
then hop on Craigslist or FB Marketplace and find a decent wifi router.
B/c some of you are much smarter about this stuff than I....does it really matter which modem I buy if I'm cutting the cord? Wow only stipulates that it needs to be DOCSIS3.0 wth that means. Amazon has this one for $60. Will that suffice or do I need something better? If better should I go for an all-in-one that inclues wifi?
Something like this would work for you. There might be a shortage on modems right now like there is on a lot of other PC and work from home equipment, because the Motorola line I use is sold out for every tier. This way you avoid a lot of money over time renting their all in one unit.

Yeah, I read the Archer A7 is compatible with att, and when I went on amazon it said the one you mentioned was the newer model and it looked like it would work too.
Anyways, I'll buy the recommended modem, and if it turns out I don't need it I'll just return it. Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
This is the CM500 to get? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_sFJEAbTVGH433
Also when you mention the Archer AC1900. Are you talking about the router I linked in my previous post? It cost $99 on Amazon with no coupon but it seems like it can be had for $70 after the coupon is applied? I just want to be sure I'm getting the right one.
I didn't even have to do that, I just plugged in the new modem/router, it prompted for the Comcast account once, and didn't prompt again. Works great.
edit: I spent about 160 finding the fastest/cheapest modem+router on Amazon about 6 months ago, so if you have a faster connection and need newer faster gear it's still going to be a bit of $ but definitely worth it.
Unless you will be paying for really high speeds, I'd suggest the Netgear NETGEAR CM500 modem (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XH46MWW/) which is currently $50 after clipping $10 coupon.
Are you trying to keep the budget low for a router (preferably no less than $50), or do you want the best connection/performance possible and willing to spend more? Much easier to make recommendations with some idea of budget.
If I were buying a 16x4 modem today I'd probably get the CM500 from Amazon for $50 (clip the $10 coupon). The SB6183 was good, but its price seems to be unnecessarily high because it was once the go-to option. The CM500 uses the same Broadcom chipset as the SB6183.
I'd get a Netgear CM500 for about $60 from Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW/
It's a solid modem and is TheWireCutter.com's current recommendation. https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cable-modem/
With those speeds, you can’t go wrong with a Netgear CM500 and a TP-Link AX1500.
I recommend against buying an all-in-one box. Compromises are made that impact performance on both the modem and router side of things.

Depending on server location I can be as fast as 220 down and 30 up
I pay for 200 Mbps connection about $85/mo. I usemy own equipment, including modem. That using 5GHz wireless. It's faster when networked.
NETGEAR CM500-1AZNAS (16x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, Max download speeds of 686Mbps, Certified for Xfinity from Comcast, Spectrum, Cox, Cablevision & more https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Ib2ZBbV2ENTX9

I won't use Mediacom provided equipment.
Never hit the 2TB cap. Not even close. We stream exclusively and game. Even when the kids are home on holiday.
Trying again w/ truncated Amazon links:
Got it! Apologies if I was that douchebag on reddit that argues with the question rather than offering an answer.
If I were you here's what I would do:
the R8000 is a beast and would be a great choice as your primary router
Stop renting the paperweight saving $X/dollars per month (10?)
Get your own cable modem (here's a nice cheap one for $45 that's valid for Spectrum) and a cheap wireless access point (may be able to find one as cheap as $40, possibly via a router set to AP mode, here's one for $20 if you're willing to go up to $50 there are a ton of great options that folks here could point you to)
Cable modem -> R8000 -> ethernet-> Wireless Access point in basement -> wireless connections for devices down there
That's about $70, if your rental is $10/month you'll be actively saving money in 7 months.
The CM400 isn't enough for 200Mbps plans in the US according to this http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-cable-modem/
If you're shopping at Amazon, I'd go for the CM500 over the CM400 since it's $50 (clip the $10 coupon) vs $45 right now.
Avoid the CM700 since it uses the Intel Puma 6 chipset: https://badmodems.com/Forum/app.php/badmodems
The CM500 would be plenty fast for your internet package and is under $50 after coupon on Amazon right now.
I get over advertised speeds. Pay for 200 and get roughly 215-230 on 5GHz wireless. More wired.
I was getting way under. Found out that my router was bottlenecking me. (Random guess by me) upgraded to a Netgear AC1750 and my speeds improved exceptionally.
I also dropped Mediacom's modem for one I got off of Amazon.

I refuse to use Mediacom equipment.
Here is what I got and since then, I’ve had nearly no issues at all with Mediacom.

NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart Wi-Fi... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Honestly I'd recommend buying them separately. Whenever you buy a 2-in-1 product you're always compromising something.
In general any good-rated cable modem will work fine. As long as you're fine with its maximum speed, it's the sort of thing that either works or it doesn't.
A wifi router, on the other hand, can really make a big difference. The good ones will cover every corner of your place and automatically adapt to the least congested wifi channel so you don't have to worry about it. Cheap ones will give you dead spots and require tweaking and rebooting to keep them working well.
Get a $45 basic cable modem (speeds up to 400 Mbps)
Then get a $150 mesh router 3-pack which will blanket your entire space with Wifi.
Just need something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-CM500-1AZNAS-download-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B06XH46MWW
We opted for the Netgear CM500 cable modem, Netgear Orbi Mesh 3-unit and Netgear 8-port switch for current and future devices. Will test this setup before drilling holes, laying 2xCa6 cables to the rooms and installing RJ45 wall plates. I'm tired of seeing and tripping over Cat6 and ethernet cable running everywhere throughout the house it's time to do it CORRECTLY and have some organization!
Never tried to cast a stream, and I have never checked If there are blimps in my up time so not sure if these will be of any help to you. However I haven't had problems in the past year streaming from Netflix or Amazon or extended outages in Woodfin with Spectum except during power outages. I've been using this modem off their approved list and this router
The CM500 is $45 right now at Amazon - that should work with Optimum right?

I picked up this Netgear on Amazon, there is a requirement list on Grande. Once you have the modem call customer service and they'll help you switch over to your modem, then you just have to return the modem they left you.
Thank you, I was just referencing this on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-CM500-1AZNAS-download-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B06XH46MWW/
However, I can understand the advertisement throtter to sell higher priced models.
I prefer to keep my modem and router separate devices. Usually if you're renting from your ISP they provide an all-in-one device but I've found them to be not as good.
For example here's a modem that's compatible with Xfinity: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-CM500-1AZNAS-download-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B06XH46MWW
The coaxial cable from the wall goes into this modem and the modem outputs an Ethernet signal to your router, something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Wireless-AC1700-Gigabit-Router-RT-ACRH17/dp/B07628HLTM/
This device distributes the internet to all the devices in your home and if you choose, allows devices within your home to talk to each other.
Xfinity is probably going to be your only internet provider. You can rent a modem/router from them for $5-$10 a month or buy your own.
Modem only: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW/
Modem + router: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H42QXF1/
You can have them come and set it up, or do it yourself. They give you a video to help set up. Pretty easy.
I think my problem is that I have this modem https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XH46MWW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I just ordered the Gig version- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07ND1PQMS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Hmm.. well I can't purchase another modem because it's more expensive and we already just bought one and I don't think they would be ok with buying something more expensive since we're splitting the modem. But, the router... looks interesting. I just wonder if two bands at that speed is enough. All of our devices are usually always connected so wouldnt the speed be pretty low per device at that rate? Is it worth buying the router even with a different modem? The modem we have now is this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XH46MWW which was the "ideal" one for our data plan with Cox.

I will for sure take your word on returning the Jetstream router though!
This is my setup:
Modem: NETGEAR-CM500
Router: Netgear-ac1750
If you want me to find something for you to buy in the next few days message me with your price range and I can help you out. (I work in IT if that gives it any justification :P)
I went through all this with TWC and now RCN, so here are my thoughts:
About 3 years ago I bought for $110 this
But indeed now there is the
Not every location in NYC can received at DOCSIS 3.1 speed, so if you would go for a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, make 100% sure you can get that speed and you are willing to pay more for the higher speed. I had 220 at TWC but moved to 165 at RCN as it is actually already plenty for me.
tl:dr: I am at 165mbps with RCN with the Netgear CM500 modem and everything works flawlessly.
Yeah, sadly anything fast here is too expensive and the only providers I found were Comcast and ATT. I wish I had fiber.
I was also looking at these:
Modem: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-CM500-1AZNAS-download-Certified-Cablevision/dp/B06XH46MWW/
Thats strange as the SB6141 and the SB6180 are both 8x4 modems which are already out of date and should give very similar performance.
You should really be looking at something with at least 16x4 or even 24x8 if you plan on keeping this for awhile.
Appreciate it!
How about this one? Has a $10 coupon (so only $49.99 at checkout): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XH46MWW/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1. Think it'll do?
Do you also think this router will get the job done or is it really worth spending a bit more? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CA5SN1K/ref=ox_sc_act_title_3?smid=A3OC1UKRC2E9Y0&psc=1
All I do is netflix/internet searching, so I don't play any online games or download anything really.
You could buy your own for under $100, here's an example. They'll probbaly sent you a Motorola or arris. Those are probably 125 to 150 or so.
You'll need at least 1 cat6 cable and 1 coax cable if you go this route.
