There are plenty of good routers that are under $120. Heck, the Nighthawk is on Amazon for $99.99 and is a solid choice, and there are other options for cheaper that would still be considered a quality WiFi router.
You'll find lots of recommendations here using the search function.
As for needing a separate modem--- nope! EPB supplies the ONT, which feeds directly into whatever modem you choose (or heck, you could even choose not to use one). The Google Nest will work, though unless you're in a large home I'd probably advise the Netgear R6700 for the price-- https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=netgear+nighthawk&qid=1595844077&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExOVk5Q0pCVlIxUFdNJmVuY3J5cHRlZE...
That'll do fantastic wired and really good wireless. For that price, it'll work great until more 8011.ax gear comes out. For most 2000ish sq ft homes, it should work great.
If the house is larger than that and NOT wired up for ethernet, then I'd potentially consider a mesh wireless system like the Netgear Orbi.
If the house is wired up (and large), mesh routers, and would look at putting in an Edgerouter 4 and several Ubiquiti access points.
I have this paired with a nighthawk extender for my upstairs which is wired directly to my PC. But the router works great with both 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands and lots of great apps to manage your networks. I use the 5ghz for my PC, Xbox One X, Smart TV and 2.4ghz band for my Switch, Phones, Laptop, etc. Probly overkill for my townhouse but my WiFi network is on point. Looks like there is also a $10 coupon for this on amazon and it’s a beast for gaming on my 300mb+ internet.
NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router, Gigabit Ethernet (R6700) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_emNkBb75D5PJ9
The cool thing about CenturyLink Gig service is that you don't need a modem at all. The ONT they provide is akin to the modem in the sense that it Modulates and Demodulates light signals. You just need a good router that supports PPPoE authentication and VLAN tagging usually (that can vary on the region a bit)
This modem appears to be decent for less than $100
Most routers on Amazon/Ebay that have "gig ethernet" and "dual band wifi" should be compatible.
Also don't expect to get gig speeds over wifi ever. That's unrealistic unless you buy the best equipment for clients and for your router. If you need the full speed a hardwired ethernet connection to the router is going to be your best bet.
so they provide internet up until the modem I assume. If that is true, then you would be responsible for providing/replacing a router. You can get any old wireless router on amazon or at walmart. If the internet is free, then it's probably not particularly fast. So you won't need something too beefy.
Again, without more information to your situation it's hard to say. However, I think all you need is to replace/upgrade into something like this: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=wireless+router&qid=1563222407&s=gateway&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&sr=8-3
Wait you too??? Is this a Netgear Nighthawk 1750 At least, that's what I have and it does the same.
I can't figure out for the life of me whats wrong with mine. Mine drops 5G all the time.
This one on Amazon would probably work fine. If you're gaming it'd be best if you could use a wired connection directly to the router though instead of wireless
CAT is the category (the speed and other specs). I would buy a CAT 6 from Amazon. You can also buy CAT 5e, but don't buy plan ol' CAT 5 cables (they're too slow for gigabit Ethernet).
RJ45 is just the connector at either end of the cable. RJ11 is a phone cable, for example.
You might be able to buy an Ethernet switch. This is my favorite 5-port switch. You just plug an Ethernet cable from the outlet in your room to the switch, then plug in the other 4 devices to the other sockets. There are also 8-port and 16-port (or more) switches, if it comes to that.
The only problem is, whatever gives out IP addresses in your dorm might not give out addresses willy-nilly. They may have a "one device per room" policy. If so, then you'd probably need to buy a router. Here's a good one. It doesn't have to be great - you only need Wi-Fi in your room, after all. The only downside to this is there may now be a "double-NAT" situation, and some apps don't like that at all.
The best thing to do would be to order a few CAT 6 cables and a router from Amazon just before you leave for school. That way, if you get there and see that that setup will work, you're aces. If not, just send the router back to Amazon.
We have mesh here (Orbi) .. I found success running a lengthy ethernet cord out of a satellite to a dry spot in a problem area, plugging it in and creating a second network there... this was, btw a metal carport, and the cams are on another side of it. Used a Netgear R6700v2 a friend gave us. Never had any idea when he gave it to us we'd use it this way, once we had it hooked up, it solved EVERYTHING for us.
You’re referring to the routers antannae, yes it is. It’s this one specifically NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart Wi-Fi Router, R6700 - AC1750 Wireless Speed Up to 1750 Mbps | Up to 1500 Sq Ft Coverage & 25 Devices | 4 x 1G Ethernet and 1 x 3.0 USB Ports | Armor Security https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_TVXAPK1EJ0VH21XZ6K8W?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
If I buy one of these does it also act as a modem?
Try something simple like the Netgear R6700: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R2AZLD2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1. It's cheap and stable.
Follow up in r/HomeNetworking/ if you need help setting things up for your scenario. They also might have other suggestions for routers.
You would need to buy a Net Duma Router/or a router with preinstalled Duma OS like the net gear nighthawk series. This allows you to apply a geofilter so that your console only pings to the nearest/lowest ping server constantly on any game you play
You can snag this one on Amazon for under a 100 bucks. All you gotta do is get an Ethernet cable and connect it to your main router. Yes they work with Oreedoo. Just search up NetDuma on YouTube to get a feel for it
never going to buy a netgear again, had one of these and it worked great for about a year capable of 900+ for my Gigabit internet, but after firmware updates for so many security issues, I couldn't get over 350 down... fucking bullshit, flash to an old firmware and bam 500+ could never find the 900+, finally give up and go to walmart and buy a Linksys router, problem fucking solved... I paid $150 for this thing and didn't even get 3 years use out of it, let alone, it can only handle about 15 devices before the 5Ghz shits out and slows it down requiring a reboot
I don't give a fuck that some people can't do it or that some people don't have 300 dollar routers (not necessary, this one would suffice, I know because I had it https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=ac+router&qid=1614091835&sr=8-4)
I also don't care that it's hard to get set up (it isn't, 3 years ago, maybe it was more finicky). You said it can't do UHD movies. You're wrong. Your shitty router not withstanding, it will play 4k without issue.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R2AZLD2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
this was just on sale for 66 couple days ago, might be a good place to start if wifi 6 is not a requirement? but even then this might be overkill....
edit: used like new for 67
I generally hear good things about the Netgear Nighthawk routers. And the Nighthawk AC1750 seems to fit your criteria and is under $100 on Amazon.
okay, is there a list somewhere of routers that give you that capability? was looking on amazon at some of the gigabit routers. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC1750-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1524849878&sr=1-3&keywords=gigabit+router this one looked pretty good speed and price wise.
There was actually an Amazon Lightning Deal on it today for $70, currently 100% claimed, but you can hit up the wait list, I just did.

So it looks like Fios is available in Georgetown. If you're just looking for internet I'd recommend their 300Mbps package at a minimum, but with 5 people splitting it I would probably go for the gigabit for $79.99 a month. If you want TV, they have bundles with TV for an extra $20 or $30 a month. I would go with at least the "extreme TV package" if you want TV, because their "preferred" is nothing but Home shopping network and religious crap. If you do Fios, this modem is only $90 on Amazon and can handle speeds up to 1.7 gigabits.
If you're going the cable internet route, Google your modem's specific model number to see what DOCSIS version it is. If it's 3.1, you're good to go with any cable internet package. If it's 3.0, you can still use it with any package up to 550Mbps, but anything over that and you'll be paying for more bandwidth than your modem can handle. If it's 2.0 or below, you need a new modem. If you do need a new modem, just google "DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem" and take your pick.
For cable internet, I recommend RCN. They definitely service Georgetown It looks like they've got a great deal going on right now for gigabit internet and TV for $79.99 a month. That's probably going to be your best bet.
Between moving and switching providers to get a better deal, I've bought internet in DC and set up home networks probably a dozen times by now, so if you have any questions about the process or need help setting anything up feel free to message me anytime.
400 sq ft?
40 sq ft is like.. a small closet.
400 sq ft would be a small apartment, but since it's two floors, it's actually closer to 800 sq ft.
So, you could go with something like this Netgear Nighthawk.
On the less expensive side, but I can't say how well it would do when dealing with upstairs as Wi-Fi in general doesn't go between floors super well. It might be enough, though, if placed correctly.
I can't really make great recommendations on consumer routers. I haven't used one in a few years, so I don't really keep up with them.
You could get something like this just make sure you don't need a special cable modem or anything that works with your isp. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=mp_s_a_1_2_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=Wireless+router&qid=1596151789&sr=8-2-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUE3MTU3WUJURDFBQkMmZW5jcnlwdGVk...
These are some things I would do to ensure your ping is lower.
get your own modem if you don't have one already. I don't know what kind of internet you have, so I can't recommend a modem to you.
have a router that is separate from the modem. Something like this would be good for someone who just wants a setup.
Be physically plugged into that router. Ethernet will give you a more stable connection than wifi.

NETGEAR Nighthawk Smart WiFi Router (R6700) - AC1750 Wireless Speed (up to 1750 Mbps) | Up to 1500 sq ft Coverage & 25 Devices | 4 x 1G Ethernet and 1 x 3.0 USB ports | Armor Security https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kO-EFbR7TGJVK this one is from a more reliable brand and has more feature such as usb support and the ability to connect to amazon echo. Cost is $85
I considered it. But honestly, I have this netgear nighthawk r 6700 router already and I have no issues really.
Plus I’m not much of a tech guy and don’t really know how much of a hassle it would be to swap the two ♂️ would it really be worth the difference? I only have one other person livin with me.
Yes i'd rather be safe than sorry... so instead of a switch i can go with a router?
I was already looking at a this: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_6?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1541775930&sr=1-6&keywords=router&refinements=p_72%3A1248879011
so could i just get this and provide myself with both ethernet conenction and wifi access under my own network then? Adding another level of protection?
I like the Netgear nighthawk routers. Love being able to manage from my phone, and it runs both 2 and 5ghz channels
NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 Dual Band Smart WiFi Router, Gigabit Ethernet (R6700) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_I.u2BbMQYY7V2
The ac1750 is right on max budget. Apply coupon available on Amazon and it's $90 right now...
If they don't charge you monthly for a modem, then rent isn't a bad idea. I've never heard of them free though...
Here is my suggestion Here. Its what i got my parents awhile back who were having issues with range. Keep in mind the 2.4 ghz channel is better for range. Also, do you need a modem?
Not to be insulting, but it's easy to confuse the cable modem with the wifi router, in fact many times they are the same device. If you got a modem or router from Xfinity, it's likely one of those all-in-ones. These are convenient, but a dedicated wifi router is 1000x better. We had shitty wifi, then bought a Netgear Nighthawk, problem solved.
I found this nighthawk one that has all the crazy features like assistant and vpn support. It does device prioritization and 450+ mbps is well over what his ISP provides. It also has a warehouse deal for $60. Would you say its a good choice?
yeah but I replaced a new router with one that was much more powerful and covered my home better, that was my point. Just because it's new doesn't mean it has good coverage. I suggest something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-AC1750-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2
hey man, thanks for your suggestions, i ended up getting the router you (and a few others) suggested, and this NETGEAR router.
another fellow on here told me it will be fine for up to gigabit speeds but only if im streaming with the occasional big download. which is exactly what i do.
A quick amazon search came up with this. Your question for the best router for $xx amount is one of the more popular questions I have seen in this subreddit, a little searching around you might find what you are looking for, or someone else will reply here with a better suggestion
The R6700 router is on sale for $79.99 right now actually, in case you don't need a modem - but I wouldn't say its two for the price of one, rather a router at normal price plus a free cable modem.
The sb6183 is fine and will work. Get a router like this. Every router will have bad reviews because wifi has a lot of variables. This is a decent router that should be good for an apartment. If you are a little more tech savy then you can get a ubiquiti access point and that will be way better than most consumer routers.
Amazon reviews for electronics are clumped together for all generations/variations of a product. Here we have 7 choices of routers, but no matter which one you click, reviews are the same.
It would be awesome if someone could separate these reviews into corresponding products. Some people mention what product they are reviewing, maybe pulling info from there.
Something like this would be a solid upgrade that doesn't break the bank. I don't think there's much reason for most people to spend over ~$130 or so on a router, unless they're an extreme case of having tons of devices, or they have a massive house with lots of brick, etc. Especially if you just keep an eye on sales and whatnot. I picked up that exact router for myself a month or two ago for closer to $80.
The Netgear AC1750 works great with it on Gamestream over 5GHz, even when both endpoints (the tablet and PC) are on wifi.
Well if drilling holes is out of the question then my 1st suggestion would be to run that long, ugly, tacky LAN cable from the router to the PC as suggested. 2nd suggestion would be to move your PC to the same room as the router and run a LAN cable. 3rd suggestion (depending on your ISP) would be to get a really good wireless AC router and have the desktop set up wirelessly. If you're concerned about throughput I have a Netgear NightHawk AC1750 (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R2AZLD2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and in my one BR apartment, I get almost full throughput everywhere wirelessly. I believe it has QOS as well so you would be able to configure the settings to give your desktop top priority and throttle every other device and you can also enable guest wifi to save your own bandwidth. I pay for 300 down and 30 up from my ISP and I have no issues gaming wirelessly on my PS4. It might be worth a try.
I've enjoyed this one.
alright thanks for the response. its only one tv since i have my pc connected to my tv and my monitor and the living room tv will be using the roku. I should also be good on devices since ill be using the proper modem and This router
@OP I used to have the same issues until I replaced my router.
Edit: 2.4Ghz will go through walls, 5Ghz will deliver 20% better results within direct range.
NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1750 Smart Dual Band WiFi Router (R6700) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Mlz2yb34KBGBH
I recently picked this up for $66. Been running it for about a week now without issues. (Live by myself but have a lot of wifi devices for Home Automation).
NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1750 Smart Dual Band WiFi Router (R6700) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_pCJkUxhrOTR2a
The Netgear R6700 is $100 at Amazon. It has the same hardware (minus a USB port and slightly slower theoretical wireless N speed) as the R7000, an extremely popular router. I run DD-WRT on mine and it's fantastic.
The Archer C7 is also a popular router but I don't know much about TP-Link's stock firmware. Plus, the TP-Link has a much weaker CPU than the Netgear.
The Asus AC56U is just under $100 and is supported by a bunch of different alternative firmwares. I own two of them and have used Merlin and Tomato without issue. Great little routers.
This one is the 6700, is that still ok if it's not the 7000?
I'm looking at that one because it's on sale right now on Amazon.
EDIT: Found out it's the 6700
Oh you already have it? Well yea, I'd definitely go ahead and call Comcast to make the swap as soon as you've got a wireless router in hand as well. I brought all my own hardware to my new place a year ago with Time Warner, wasn't any hassle at all.
Personal note, Google Wifi is cool and all, but it's main strength is in niche cases where you have a huge house or a house with tons of brick that causes dead zones. For the cost of a single puck, you can get a router that will perform significantly better in most cases. If you're looking at getting multiple, something like this would still be significantly less and be great.
Wireless devices are advertised as being able to transfer up to a certain speed. That means with absolutely perfect conditions on both the test device and the router itself.
With routers, you get what you pay for and if you want semi-realistic speeds of 200mbps over wifi, you'll most likely need a better router. <$100 for a router is meh in the networking world, high speed and longevity for me has been found for ~$150-$200 sweet spot.
I had my Archer C5's set up in a bridge format to basically have a separate network in my home.
Something like this would probably give you better speeds. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-Nighthawk-R6700-100NAS-AC1750-Gigabit/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=sr_1_39?rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1483582080&sr=8-39&keywords=Netgear+Wireless+Router&refinements=p_89%3ANETGEAR%2Cp_85%3A2470955011
here's the steps:
Here's a budget router I recommended, netgear is the only thing I use so that's what I think is the best if you don't wanna spend too much money
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_N3ZZ80EQJ8QGNWD53AZM
Netgear R6700 is right at $80 on Amazon because they have a $10 off deal.
>what power of router would I need to utilize the 100mbps?
Theoretically a wireless N router rated N100+ should handle 100Mbps, but that hasn't been my experience and so I'd recommend looking for a dual/tri band wireless N+AC router if you really want to utilize the 100Mbps.
Amazon has a Netgear R6700 AC1750 (N450+AC1300) router for $109.99 - $20 coupon now. It's a decent router for the price and the 5GHz AC1300 band should handle 100Mbps fine.
Theoretically the 2.4GHz N450 band should handle 100Mbps (since it's rated for 450Mbps) but oftentimes devices' 2.4Ghz won't handle it. For example, my iPhone maxes out at 30-40Mbps or so on my router's 2.4Ghz N600 band (Asus AC1900) but I can get my full provisioned 70Mbps speed on my iPhone using the 5GHz AC1300 band. Could just be something funky in my router settings.
If you're a Costco member they have a Linksys AC1900 on sale for $109. Also, I've seen Negear X6 R7900 AC3000 (N450+AC1300x2) tri-band routers on clearance there for $149.
Any nighthawk tbh I have the nighthawk ac1750 here's a link it's not that pricy compared to other nighthawks but I really recommend a nighthawk for gaming and streaming https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8VgjFb54FEMCP
This is the router I own and it work great for me https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8VgjFb54FEMCP
Hold on. Do you have DSL because you live somewhere where DSL is the only option? I ask because if you have BellSouth\AT&T DSL in metro Charlotte, AT&T would love it if you called and asked about fiber. In fact, I'm pretty sure if you call AT&T tech support with a DSL issue around here they basically give up and push you to fiber. And with AT&T Fiber you get a free modem+router combo. It probably won't be the best, but unless you have 97 Wi-Fi devices it should work OK.
I'm not gonna look at DSL modems just now, but for routers I (independent IT guy) think the whole Netgear Nighthawk range is pretty sweet. If all you can afford is "less than $100", then get this. If you can spend more, get this. If you'd like mesh, there's this - it's spendy, but my Netgear Orbi has done well the past two years.
I am in Mosher Hall and I am able to get switch ethernet to work. Although, It is slower than wifi. First, get a router (I got this one). Disable the wireless transmission, so it is basically a gigabit switcher (real gigabit switchers don't work on TAMU wifi). Second, get a USB to ethernet adapter (I recommend the one from Hori). Plug everything in and you should have access to Switch Online.

I wouldn’t recommend the router that comes with Metronet. I had tons of issues. I bought this one and haven’t looked back https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_dl_AWQR92AFGRNMMX0XB54K

It was actually recommended by the greenlight tech that set up.
This is the one I purchased - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R2AZLD2/
My computer was reaching the correct speeds with the old router, the issue was wireless devices across the home not getting a good enough signal. The problems have reversed with the Nighthawk, wireless devices are flying but my desktop is not reaching the full speed. I can't try a different cable as the cable running from my router to the desktop is pinned to the wall, but it is running on a CAT6 Cable. Can't connect directly to the ONT as the cable won't reach, I'd have to see if I have a long cable I can just drag across the floor for the sake of testing.
Thanks. I’m getting this one?
Oooo and fyi if you need it right away I would go to Best Buy and get a price match. Thats what I did. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=tsm_1_tp_tc

If this is your router ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_dlT3_ngYaGb31MH4Y2 ), the model is R6700.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_dlT4_4ZL9Fb7EJ9FJ0
From personal experience a very very good router and it's at a reasonable price can find a better one will be more expensive but this is very good
This is where i bought mine https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ but R7000 is pretty good too
Hi Reddit! I bought this for $60 on Amazon the other day, should I return instead?
NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1750 Smart Dual Band WiFi Router (R6700) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_3vboiZ2yKGtb6
In that case you should without a doubt go with the R6700 Nighthawk on Amazon that's currently under $100. https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-R6700-Nighthawk-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00R2AZLD2/
Anyone know how this one is compared to the NETGEAR R6700 from Amazon for $90?
I have a Netgear Nighthawk R6700 ($88.99 on Amazon, but has a $10 coupon, so $78.99).
You can turn off either or both radios in the web UI. I looked at it just now, and I don't think there's a radio button on it. Pic of the admin UI:
Maybe a stronger router then? This is on sale and has a strong signal. It's currently also 15% cash back with the Amazon Visa Card.
I live in Lucky in a 2bed room 2 bath. My roommate and I use this router and so far it has worked great. I'm sure it's good enough for three people aswell.

The $90ish one
Although it does say up to 1500 square feet so maybe double check your unit size first.
Having owned an A7 and a Nighthawk, I'd take the Nighthawk over the A7 any day. It's faster and more stable than the A7:

My apologies I meant router not modem here's a router I recommend https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8VgjFb54FEMCP
I suggest this router www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_8VgjFb54FEMCP a little more expensive but it's really good I just bought this router also to replace spectrums terrible router and it's amazing
All routers run the same standard, they will all be compatible. Your tier plan is 200/200 (probably overprovisioned to 300/300) so not much is required by the router. It all depends on how many clients you'll have on your wifi, home structure.
The most important thing to keep in mind when you're buying a router is that the store should have a good return policy in the event that the router isn't satisfying your needs of wifi range.

The R6700 seems like a pretty solid deal and inexpensive. Received an update earlier this month too! The ASUS ones I linked are WiFi 6 (Ax) but they're only relevant if you have devices with wifi 6 support, I wouldn't worry too much about AC or Ax since Wifi 6E is coming out (which requires new hardware on router + devices again).
This one, which I believe is on the cheaper end at $88 (it was like $50 when I got it). Probably some improved options still around the same price or less someone can hopefully weigh in on.
In looking at my Amazon purchase history I see and now remember I also bought a separate modem, since apparently (at least at the time) the dual router/modems tended to have some issues. I pasted that link below ($63 now, $30 when I bought it).
Sorry for saying I had a dual modem/router earlier since I definitely had that at one point years ago before I got these but never had to mess with them since so I completely forgot.

Do you need the WiFi above gigabit speeds? At 1200 sq. ft. most $80+ routers will cover the area. I saved some money and went with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R2AZLD2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and I haven't had any problems. It also has a USB 3.0 for network storage and 4 gigabit ports.
Definitely the best routers I have used. Amazon currently has the NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 for $80 (with coupon).
Yeah I'd put money on that being the source of your problem. The 2.4GHz spectrum is already crowded with so many things: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, wireless devices like keyboards, mice, game controllers, etc. Add an entire household of devices and the poor network is going to be crying for mercy.
So you have a few choices going forward:
Edit: typos
I just picked up a NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk, which actually has very similar specs to your AC66U. I like the NETGEAR routers because they support open firmware. And from what I found, the R6700 and the R7000 are basically the same spec hardware, so it didn't seem worth the extra $50 for the R7000. Only major difference was the USB ports and I don't use those anyway.
Looking to buy this wifi router on amazon. Anybody knows if it works with singapore power sockets?
the router i got was the Netgear R6700 model AC1750 (i assume you live in a house, so probably bump up your model number so you can get a bigger range, i got the cheapest one cuz im in an apartment)
and the modem was Netgeart CM500 (again, choose a pricier one depending on how many people will be using the internet and if you need 1gbps speeds or something)
both seem good so far, unsure on longevity but my previous modem/router from netgear was like 6 years old so they seem built well.
This one would probably suit your needs.
Yes, it would. But something like the Netgear R6700 would be a far better router for just slightly more money.
The R6700 is the one I use with my CenturyLink fiber. (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_t.7wBbC8CDCE4)
It's the R6700
Any router will work. That one's probably overkill, I'd go for this one or this one.
Here's how you swap routers, in detail. Make sure you have your new router and the MoCA adapter.
Have both routers plugged in and turned on. Nothing but the power cord should be connected to your new router.
Log in to the Verizon router's settings pages, go to Broadband Connection, and press DHCP release. As soon as you do this, unplug the cable from the WAN port of the Verizon router. This ensures that the new router will be able to connect to the internet right away.
Plug that cable into the WAN/Internet port of your new router. Log in to its settings pages and make sure the internet works.
Unplug the cable from the LAN port of the Verizon router and connect it to a LAN port of your new router.
Unplug the Coax cable from the Verizon router and plug it into the Coax In port of the MoCA adapter.
Connect an Ethernet cable between the MoCA adapter's Ethernet port and a LAN port on your new router.
At this point you can send back the Verizon router.
Also note that you don't have to do all this in order. Basically, you just need to move the WAN/Internet cable from one to the other and make sure you can get internet on the new one, then move over all the LAN devices including the Coax cable (to which you'll add the MoCA adapter).
Thanks, I was about to buy the Asus 1300 today but now I see a sale on Netgear AC1750 (R6700) making it the same price as Asus 1300. I've used the NETGEAR Nighthawk R6700 with that exact surfboard modem and the combination works great. Very stable, and the wifi range is very good. Amazon link
I love NetGear routers. I would probably recommend this one. I personally think staying at $100 for a router is the sweet spot. There are cheaper routers too. You just need to look at the specs and see what you need. I would just make sure to get one thats AC1200 or higher to keep up with current technology.
As for modems, I use the Zoom. Best price out there and I haven't had a single issue. I use it for a 300Mb connection with Spectrum.
Also, how is this Netgear unit? link

Here is a simple and easy to setup router that should be fine for an apartment
Powerline is useless, I don't know why people suggested it. Also, what is your actual speed on speedtest, ie what are you paying the internet company for. When these devices say "300mbps" or what have you, that's not necessarily your internet speed as much as your network speed(From computer A to computer B, how fast can I transfer?). Most newer routers these days can handle gigabit internet (1000mbps from the modem to your computer via ethernet cable), now that doesn't mean it will allow the devices to utilize that on wifi appropriately--hence these newer routers. my router is rated for 5334 Mbps but this is really theoretical and only applies to LAN transfers.
my brother picked up this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G8IPLD8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and he says it's outstanding (gamer, router is located on the complete opposite side of the house and he has no issues). My performance on devices drastically changed when I upgraded my router(asus rt5300, overkill but my god is it glorious)
thanks again for your fast replies. I really appreciate this. Im just going to return these APs since it doesnt seem like i will need them. So i just want to quadruple check the configuration while im still able to return the things i bought. So here is my final question and im sorry to keep berating you with questions... So youre saying i can have it be my Comcast Cisco DPC3941B Modem/Router connected to my Ubiquiti Unifi US-8-150W Switch connected to 5 routers.. something like 5 NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1750 Smart Dual Band WiFi Router (R6700) and that will work? And if so, how will i assign the IPs to each of the routers? Would i use comcasts online management thing or ubiquiti's switch management thing? lol again thanks so much and im sorry for all the novice questions.
Looks like I put the incorrect link:
I will reupload.

Ouch, you should definitely look at getting a decent router. That will help a great deal. Something like this.
I have had this one (Netgear AC1750 R6400) for over a year now and it has been very solid. It's on sale at Newegg for $90 right now. IIRC it is just a step below the NightHawk line. Of course Amazon also has the NightHawk AC1900 R6700 for $99.99 right now too.
My mistake, I have the (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2AZLD2?ref=emc_b_5_t&th=1)
I know ISP's get shit on a lot in America, and mostly for good reason. However, the chance of both ISP's being the cause of under 1mb/s speeds without them noticing something wrong is extremely unlikely.
You're using a very sketchy tech in powerline adapters, as, like u/TheEthyr said, they are not insulated from interference from other things that use power in your house or outside sources. You also likely have a lot of wifi interference going on for your wireless devices, especially if it's a single band 2.4ghz device.
As the other person said, get a laptop, or your PlayStation or something and hardwire it with an Ethernet cable into the modem, then test the speed. If you test the speed that way and it's good, look into getting a dualband router with external antennas so that you can take advantage of the 5ghz freq and more transmit power. Something like this. A good router is going to be more reliable than powerline in most cases.
Also, Call your ISP.
They are the ones best equipped to investigate this issue, and correct any possible problems with their network. Use them along side your own knowledge to come to a solution without undue bias being directed at the isp being the cause.
Thanks for reading.

The most recent tests you can see on there were from me swapping between the router and direct connection to the ONT.
All my ethernet is Cat5e, with a few Cat6 here and there. I ordered some shielded Cat6a that I havn't recieved yet.
None of the ethernet cables are longer than 30ft.
My desktop and work computer are connected via ethernet. All other devices in the house are wifi. I get the low speeds even on the wired desktops.
