Like so many movie remakes we're seeing lately, it's a rehash of a 1950s-era novelty.
Some truly revolutionary technology would be having moviegoers strap electrodes onto their skulls so that electronic signals that resonate with their neural nets can be pumped directly into their noggins, enabling them to see, smell, maybe even touch a cinematic world as it's being played back.
That would absolutely kick ass, but it's the stuff of Neuromancer and probably decades away at best.
