Neverfall: Mark of the Hero (Book 1)
Neverfall is a coming of age light novel series that takes place in a virtual fantasy world.
High school senior Luke sees the walls of his life closing around him as he spends more and more of his time caring for his mother, who is very ill. He dreads the day his three best friends graduate and leave him behind for college. His only escape is fantasy video games, and he cherishes every minute spent with Cassie, Christopher, and Mack.
It's all too appropriate, then, when his chance for adventure comes in the form of a virtual reality game. When a mysterious older man shows up at Luke's door, he reveals a family secret that the young man would never have dreamed of. Because of this lineage, only Luke can enter Neverfall, the world's first immersive VR game technology, with a Dungeons and Dragons styled world so realistic that the beta players have forgotten their true selves and believe that the game is real.
Luke and his friends must become the heroes they've only pretended to be in games. Join rogue wood-elf Cassie, pacifist high elf healer Christopher, dwarven berserker Mack, and battle mage Luke as they dive deep into the game to rescue the humans trapped inside.

Four friends go on a quest to save players trapped in Neverfall Online, a virtual reality MMORPG, in this multi-book adventure saga.
Luke Stephens’ three best friends are leaving their hometown for college, but he must stay home to care for his terminally ill mother.
He has accepted his fate, but just as in the video games they love, Luke and his friends are given a real-life quest that changes their lives forever. Dr. Armitage, a secretive man linked with an immersive fantasy roleplaying technology, has tracked Luke down to give him a dangerous mission: to rescue the several-hundred beta testers who cannot log out of the cyber world, and believe that their in-game lives are real.
Luke’s companions won’t let him go alone. All four students are assured that they will be transported into the game at the highest level so they can easily defeat the Dark Lord and reset the world of Neverfall.
But when they enter the game, Luke and his friends all begin at Level 1: defenseless, poor, and powerless. The party must level up as though their lives depend on it, for it’s not just a game.
Luke, Cassie, Mack, and Christopher must stay alive because though the world is virtual, the deaths are very real…
I’ve missed DMing Dungeons & Dragons games. In real life though it’s hard to get a group together regularly to play a campaign. So when I found LitRPG and Gamelit books, I realized I could DM a game, at least in a way, by writing it down and playing all the characters for readers.
Making this more like a Dungeons & Dragons’ adventure is also why Neverfall has a party of companions, not just a single hero’s adventures, though you see most from Luke’s POV. I can think of nothing better than getting lost in an epic fantasy world with friends and that was something I wanted to put in this series.
Audiobook and paperback versions will be available, too.
I really hope you check it out. Thanks!

I've written the first book in a YA fantasy action adventure novel called Neverfall. Here's the description and link if you'd like to check it out (it's in KU and an audio version is coming out soon):

Neverfall is a coming of age light novel series that takes place in a virtual fantasy world. For fans of action & adventure with earnest young heroes finding their way in a place full of magic, enchanted weapons, and quests that lead them into situations unknown.
High school senior Luke Stephens feels his life is over at age 18. Instead of enjoying his last year in school, Luke cares for his ill mother. As her health rapidly declines, defeating dragons, orcs and goblins with his best friends in their favorite video game has to come last, even if wielding magic and a blade with Mack, Cassie and Christopher is the best part of his life.
But then, Dr. Richard Armitage appears at Luke’s door, and tells him that only Luke can rescue the beta players in Neverfall, the world’s first fully immersive virtual reality MMORPG. The beta players not only believe they are their characters, but think that the world of Neverfall is real, so that when they die in the game, they are dying in real life.
The reason that Luke can save them? His father is the creator of Neverfall, and he has left a back door for just Luke to enter the game, while the developers are completely locked out. The one problem? Luke’s father died before he was born, and the creator of Neverfall--reclusive billionaire Xander Mallory--is very much alive. Is the professor wrong, or has Luke’s mother lied to him all his life?
Luke chooses to enter the game with Mack, Cassie and Christopher by his side to put Dr. Armitage’s plan in motion and save everyone. But when mysterious tattoos in the shape of dragons are magically burned into Luke’s skin, and people start referring to him as “The Dark Lord’s son” and “Dragon Prince”, Luke realizes that the plan has gone awry, and he must come up with another plan quickly or he, and everyone else, will die.
