Not to complicate things for you by suggesting yet another rust removal method, but Nevr Dull has always been my silver bullet when it comes to rust removal and one can will last me ages. For extreme build up it may not be the fastest or most efficient solution, but it's one of those thing I stay stocked up on like duct tape, etc. It's always handy.

Actually that’s brass isn’t it? You might just want to go with never-dull for that.

You can probably find this stuff at your local stores too.

I second Nevr Dull, and also recommend rubbing with a super thin film of dish soap to keep air and moisture at bay. Also, don't touch it.

I use Nevr Dull (also available at Walmart or Auto Parts store). Works great and is super convenient.

Maybe try something like Nevr-Dull? I've used it on a bunch of metal surfaces ranging from brass to steel and it generally delivers good results.
