budget? i used these for a while and i unironically vouch for them. for reference - i went from logitech G930's, to that pair, to logitech pro X. they were fine. sound quality is something where you definitely get what you pay for - but they work and theyre comfy and theyre cheap as hell
I've bought two of these in the past four years, one for myself and one for a friend. Both still working well after regular use (even though I've since moved to a wireless headset earlier this year). Never had any issues with them, and only control them through PulseAudio mixer.
I use a $27 headset (Amazon link) which has a really decent mic (I get compliments on it often) and decent audio.
As far as tips to make stuff work, there's a few settings to mess with (audio volume, push-to-talk vs threshold, input device, and a few enabling checkboxes) but generally if you can voicechat in other games it should work in DDO. Personally I couldn't use a headset with Windows 8, but can with Windows 10; so there might be some drivers etc as well.
^ This. Best way to go is headphone and mic separate combo. Even high-end gaming headsets have mediocre microphone quality.
If you truly need one at that pricepoint, i'd suggest this pair that has pretty superb reviews on amazon for $26
Wow did you miss the point. The first thing I said is I mostly buy cheap stuff and make it work. I actually have three headphones that I swear by and when I bought them they were all under $30. My usb headset for gaming is this one, my sleep headphones are here, and my studio headphones are these.
That being said I see no problem in trying different cheap headphones. There is usually a really good headphone that will out perform it's price point for any application.
Budget: ~$40
Source: PC
Requirements for Isolation: Noise Cancellation
Preferred Type: Over Ear
Last few things are fairly irrelevant since I'm not picky at all.
So I've started playing video games again and I really need a new mic. I was planning on just buying a gaming headset since there's a good amount of them for around ~$30 but I know it's better to buy headphones + a separate mic. My main issue is, I'm not really that concerned with a great quality. Can I even realistically get a mic + headphones for ~$30-40 that will be significantly better than just a headset with a similar price? Obviously if my budget was higher I could understand that there's a huge difference because most headsets are all marketing, but at this level I'm unsure. I'm currently looking at these two headsets:
I realize they're probably terrible by this sub's standards, but I've literally been using $10 earbuds for over a year for my computer, as I'm not an audiophile by any means. I looked at the buying guide and there aren't many options for under $50, which is outside of my budget anyway, and that doesn't even cover the cost of the mic as well.
