In the "first American Republic", he says, this "Anglo-American nation," the compromise was between North and South to keep blacks in bondage. Obviously don't agree with all his points, but it's thought-provoking for a European-American writer.

Edit2: I say this as a former moderate Republican with libertarian leanings myself. Ideologies are nice, but it's also important to recognize and understand social realities.
