You can access a lot of the grill area by removing the cover plate under the hood, and probably the plastic skid plate thing underneath the front end.

I originally wanted the light bar to be mounted into the slot under the plate but actually I bought the wrong kind of light bar so the mounts weren’t on the side so I ended up getting the bracket. I installed it on my 2005 with a couple of old Optilux HID 4inch lights I had in my garage. I just used 4 stainless steel panhead screws (#12x3/4" I think) to screw it right into the plastic of the bumper. Also had to add some nylon spacers between the mount and the bumper to account for the curvature of the bumper, but it ended up pretty solid. I probably need to add a 'NO TOW' sticker so no one gets any bright ideas. Lol. :)

Warn makes a really nice one for the Crosstrek and Forester and the grill guard part is optional but it'll set you back around $700. You can get a generic front light bar pretty cheap though, I'll link some for you! There are others too, I was going to buy the warn bumper for my crosstrek as it doesn't take away any clearance and was the best quality for the money, ended up loosing the Crosstrek in a wreck and picked up a new Forester. I have a warn bumper on it plus grill guard and love it, installing a light bar on it today.
