We got our Mal a puzzle. It has three types of compartments to unlock and you can put a treat in it. It’s really engaging. At first he was bad at it, but now he’s really good at sniffing out the correct compartments for his treat and unlocking it the right way.
This is what we gave. It’s a good toy.
This treat puzzle. Have two of them, one for each dog.
The 1yo toy poodle loves it and is really good at sliding the containers, she can spend 15-20 minutes with it which is a lot because she’s got the puppy short attention span still.
My 6yo labradoodle doesn’t really understand it, but he can open up the top containers with some prompting. He likes to watch the little one open the containers and then take the treats that she finds.
With my older one, I got him when I started college. Newsflash: It was awful. And then things got better. And then he became an adolescent (read: things got awfuler). And then things are got better again.
Anyway, for some forsaken reason, my husband wanted another puppy. So I’m dealing with a 4 month old during finals :) She gets tummy troubles often. 1. We have one of those warming pads for her to make her feel a bit better. 1. We also freeze pumpkins and let her go ham on that. (Pumpkins help poop.) 2. I’m also a huge fan of the snuffle mats. They help calm, keep her busy, and tire her out! 3. We call it the destroy box or go ham box, but basically we get a small cardboard box and fill it with kibble and paper towels. If we have empty toilet paper rolls, we put some kibble in there and close/fold up the roll on itself. We’ll throw all that in a box, and fold it closed. If I have extra boxes, I’ll put as many as I can. Heck, I’ll even put empty paper towel rolls in there too. I let her destroy or go ham on the boxes and try to find all the kibble. Dogs have a natural instinct to destroy, so I like doing it in a controlled manner. It keeps her busy for quite a while, and she’s usually pooped after.
5. Frozen puzzles, frozen puzzles, frozen puzzles. I don’t like just putting her food into a bowl, she works for her meals. She either earns it through training, one of the above methods, or through a frozen puzzle. It may be a frozen Toppl, kong, frozen towel, put liquidy stuff in this bad boy and freeze it, frozen lickmat, or even plain frozen vegetables.
Best of luck on your finals! We’re in it together LOL
When we’re working from home and about to go into an important meeting we’ll load up a puzzle toy with treats and set that out for our Pyr. It keeps her occupied mentally and physically and we find she’s usually calmer after completing the puzzle. Most of them are sold in levels too so as your dog learns you can increase the difficulty. This is the one we currently use
We have been using the same one for about a year, and we actually feed her her dinner in the puzzle:
I think it is about time that we get her a new one for some extra challenge. We also use a Kong, which she loves and never gets tired of. You can purchase something called a “snuffle mat” to hide their kibble in :) You can also hide treats around the house for a fun game of hide and seek!
When you take your pup for a walk, give yourself some extra time and let them follow their nose. Sniffing is actually very mentally stimulating, so taking an extra ten minutes to allow your dog to follow different scents makes a big difference!
A good mix of physical and mental stimulation will make for a happy pup :) Ours also loves to learn new tricks. Minis love to learn and please their owners!

But a bigger bigger version. I have a little dog that can now work through hunting treats . She loves it. I use only about 5 treat and she will go through checking all of them. She really loves it.
Sorry for the delay in my response!
Here is one of the puzzles I got for my girls. I have several, but all by this company. Also, have you tried a Kong? One of my girls really loves to work at that - I change around what I stuff inside.

You can even make games - Once in awhile I play "cups" with my pups. I'll put a treat under 1 of 3, swap them all around, and if they pick the right cup they get the treat. It's actually pretty easy to keep them engaged once you find several things they enjoy. I try to do at least 1-2 enrichment activities each day with them and they absolutely love it (as do I). If you ever have any other questions, feel free to shoot me a message.
my redbone doesn't really do toys, occasionally she will find one that squeaks and just make noise
If they are rambunctious take them for walks or let them play, when ours was younger the dog park was great for this
Be careful as hounds natural instinct is to run off chasing a smell, they are not off leash dogs unless you are training them to hunt
The other thing you can try tho is food based toys, like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0711Y9XTF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Sorry for the late reply.
With regards to puzzle toys, I like the kong wobbler, snuffle mats, and puzzle toys like this one. Start with things that are more on the simple side and then as he gets more crafty you can upgrade to more difficult toys. A lick mat might also be something worth looking into.
A great toy for high energy dogs is a flirt pole. I always feel a bit silly playing with one in my backyard but meh, it gets Millie running and jumping and can really tire her out quickly.
The barking is most likely a result of boredom. I think if you really commit to getting him the appropriate exercise and mental stimulation you will see that wane. Anxiety could be a variety of things - if you think it's unmanageable by training alone then I definitely would ask your vet about anti-anxiety meds until you can get him on a good training regimin. Good luck!
Huh, the muffin tin + tennis balls was more difficult than the outward hound toys? We've got this one and it took about 10-15 minutes for her to solve the first time with the flaps, now down to just a matter of minutes. She loves tennis balls and uses her snout to push things around any time she sniffs anything so I figured the combination of experiences would make the tennis balls practically useless.
I actually just bought this for my Golden girl. She is a speed eater... while it slows her down from eating, she gets so hype for it. Sticking to it for treats! Outward Hound - intermediate
sounds like they’ve got a lot of energy to spear. you should get them puzzle toys like a Kong or this treat dispensing toy. Also, play with them whenever you can, and take them on as many walks as possible.
The main one we feed her out of is one of those balls you put the kibble in and she rolls it around with her nose to get it out. But also at her last puppy social they had a couple of those slot-type ones ex: https://www.amazon.ca/Outward-Hound-Dispensing-Exercise-Ottosson/dp/B0711Y9XTF. Anything that makes them use their nose is good mental exercise I think!
My girl is smart, sassy, stubborn, and we have an amazing bond. She genuinely is my best friend. I never planned to have a dog, but she wriggled her way into my heart when she was 3 weeks old. I fell in love when I saw her determination and curiosity. She doesn’t like the cute hair ties and clips I’ve tried to put on her, and she hates her winter sweater but has accepted it as a necessary evil. She understands so many words and phrases. I’m amazed at how much she has picked up without me teaching her. She loves learning tricks and doing puzzles like this one.
You can't really go wrong, but I'd start more on the intermediate side. This one from Amazon is great; our mini pood solved it in about 15 minutes. He loves it.
I have a 15 week old Corgi that loves (and needs) puzzles so I would love to share some of the things that have helped!
-Look up Nina Ottosson puzzle toys on Amazon. They have some beginner, intermediate, and expert level of puzzles which has been so amazing as they build on each other. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0711Y9XTF/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_wRicDbT9022S1
Link to the puzzle toy I have and my little guy LOVES when I bring this out.
This is the one I have. Similar kind of idea as the Kong. But you can change how tight you twist it depending on the level of difficulty (or how big/small treats are). This has been another big hit just because he loves to push it with his nose and run around with it :)
-any kind of hide and seek toys. This is not so much a typical puzzle toy but I'm putting this out there because it's pretty easy to change up. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000HHQ3AM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZXicDbPXPKJMS
I have a couple of different toys similar to this and they have also been big hits. The link I provided is toy squirrels inside a "tree trunk" with various holes to pull the squirrels out of. There are so many other toys with cute/funny themes like this(my personal favorite is a popcorn bucket with "popcorn" inside). My little corgi loves this one the most just because we can put all kinds of toys inside the tree trunk (squeaky toys, treats, chew treats, etc) and it isn't limited to only the objects it comes with. I've found my little guy plays with this toy the longest just because it's more play interactive while still providing some mental stimulation than the other toys.
Hope this helps and you can find some good toys for your little one!! :) feel free to PM me if you want any other ideas, corgis are the best :)

Of course! These are some I’ve used, and some I’m planning on buying in the future. Also if your dog isn’t too destructive they do have fabric puzzles, I know my boy would destroy one in a day, but if yours is the rare non tornado acd that might be best to start with.

So my yorkie adores puzzle toys outward hound ones are her favorite. Also, I highly recommended chase ‘n chomp balls for any dog that likes balls, we’ve never had one destroyed even by our most destructive dogs, though they do have a squeaker but they are pretty easy to remove
Think this is it

For my husky, i’ve always chopped up her meaty treats so she enjoys them more instead of vacuuming them up. Especially with those long bacon/jerky ones. I taught her to sit using those, so every time i pull them out, she immediately sits and waits for me to give her the treat. Dogs should earn their treat, so try teaching your dog to sit, lat down, kiss, give paw, etc. so that they get the treat only when they listen and obey to your orders. It also keeps their mind active to learn new tricks. Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise in all dogs, but especially in dogs like huskies and border collies. Other than that, i would suggest buying some toys like this, or this, that would keep her mind active while at the same time making her work for her treat. Also, for mental exercise with no treat, buy a toy like this. My husky loves it.
Is she also a fast eater? If so, you should buy a slow feeder like this one.

Here's a few Amazon links for different ideas. Chewy has a huge selection of mental toys and just about every design on nesting you. (the squirrel toy linked above)
Don't use everyday commands when you're mad. With their intelligence, if they start to associate commands with negative outcomes, they'll stop doing them altogether. Don't yell "come!" when you're about to punish your dog, etc. If you need your dog for something negative, go to them. That way, when something big happens like trying to run into the freeway, you can tell "come!" And your dog will listen.
Don't give a command unless you are confident and prepared to enforce/reward and don't give the command more than three times without correcting behavior if the dog isn't listening. Otherwise, he'll learn to tune you out. Confidence in your voice is also a HUGE deal, even if it's fake. The dog needs to think you're confident or he'll see weakness and attempt to overtake you as the alpha.
Halti/gentle leaders for when on the leash. They are 100% safe. They move power from your dog's body to his about so that when he pulls, there isn't much muscle behind his actions and it actually pulls his head back instead of pulling you forward which quickly teaches him not to pull. I'd recommend getting the name brand for this because they have the ring around the base of the snout but also caging made out of the straps underneath his bottom jaw which makes it very difficult for them to slip out. I've tried other brands and Jack always escapes. This will give you virtually complete control when on walks.
Remember that you have a husky. I know that sounds silly but huskies are far more similar to wolves than they are to other domesticated dogs when it comes to chain of command, pack mentality, etc. Consider what an alpha wolf would do and imitate that as well as you can in your actions. This in NO way is telling you to be mean or cruel to the dog. No fights to the death for pack leadership please. Alphas are leaders. They set examples and quickly respond to behavior they don't like. Every single time. They also protect and love on their pack. Be a good leader and the better behavior follows.
Not a dog trainer. Just lifelong dog owner and husky enthusiast.
I wonder if this might be a good fit for what you are looking for. This took our dog a good 20 minutes to figure out.

Have you tried puppy puzzles? There's a ton of different styles, but the basic idea is that you have a ball/puzzle/"snuffle mat"/whatever that you put treats or kibbles in, then your dog has to hunt for them.
They're nice because you can just fill them up, then the pup gets mental and physical stimulation trying to get all the treats (or whatever) out while you can chill or do other things.
Our favorites have been kibble/treat-dispensing balls and the Outward Hound Nina Ottoson puppy puzzles (of which the "puppy brick" is our girl's all-time fave).
We also have a bit of a "custom" puppy puzzle that we made with bits of fabrics shoved into a ball (details and pics here), so that might be a good option too if your pup isn't too inclined to swallow fabric. Our girl is 10 months now and her fabric ball is still one of her favorites to just sit and chill with. It's also nice because she can just go grab it herself if she wants to play with it, whereas our other puppy puzzles require me to set them up with some kibble/treats before she can play with them.
You'll definitely have to play around and see what works for your pup, but I would definitely recommend trying some sort of puppy puzzle or snuffle mat to see if it helps your girl entertain herself independently.
Raising a puppy is definitely a journey with lots of experimenting, but it goes quickly and you'll have a laid back adult dog before you know it!
Our 4 month old loves some brain challenges - enough that if we try to help him 'figure it out' he tell us no, he's got this...well that and maybe thinks we're trying to steal his treats.
The Nina Ottoman range is exvellent for this, and there are about 10 or so different puzzles of differnet skill levels. We just rotate around so he never gets too familiar with them to solve them quickly. iQuties is another similar brand.
A good large snuffle mat goes a long way if your Dobie likes sniffing (which dog doesn't) as well. Excellent to use just before quiet/bed time as well, as it forces them to slow down and not run around, while still tiring them out.
Kong Wobblers are simple, but they also work. Put a small tennis ball inside as well as the biscuts to slow the amount of treats that fall out as well, makes it last longer.
Outward Hound also make some great ones as well, for him to get his snooter into. Ours loves these ones, and they make great throw toys after he gets them out of the 'tree'.
If you have the space something like the bungee ropes can also work, but they're not the best as they never truly let the dog 'win'.
A little more costly, and probably not advised if your dog is a heavy destroyer of worlds is CleverPet. These ones are great for learning patience and control as well.
Again if you have the space and money, an automatic ball launcher (with timer!) is a great option like this one. Depends if you dog likes playing fetch or not I guess. I know ours doesn't return things well.
Another cheap easy way is a small sandpit. Again, assuming the space is available, you do have a Doberman after all! Something like this cheap and simple set would do it, and one can have water if you live in a hot area, get some builders sand (cheaper than play sand and the same sterialization) and bury some toys/treats for the dog to find. Another great option is to fill it with the plastic ballpit balls, as these are easily emptied when you want to pack it away as opposed to sand - and if you don't want to specifically buy that, you can just use old water bottles. The water bottles can also be used sneakily if you leave a couple with their caps off, and put some treats inside them as well, forcing your dog to search for the ones with the treats, smells and sounds.
Hope this helps! PS: Dog Tax please!

Dig boxes, walks, and cat teaser toys are big winners for us.
Yep. Lol. He only eats from food based puzzle toys/kongs.
We recently bought this one: https://www.amazon.ca/Outward-Hound-Dispensing-Exercise-Ottosson/dp/B0711Y9XTF/ref=asc_df_B0711Y9XTF/

The cheapest puzzle toys can be free! There are lots of DIY puzzle toys if you just google it. But if you want to actually buy one I love the nina ottoson outward hound ones (scroll through that link for lots of options). I'm not sure what your definition of cheap is but those are great. You can also do a slow-feeding bowl (again scroll through the options).

I haven't seen it suggested yet, but have you tried directing some of your dog's energy towards mental stimulation instead of physical? My dog is also going bonkers, but having her do meals and treats with a variety seems to cut down the crazy. Something like this, this or this. We're still going on walks, but I'm trying to limit it to 10-15 minutes per walk on super bad days.
They're destructive inside and outdoors because they're untrained, underexercised and under stimulated. Boredom is the underlying cause of many behavioural issues. You'd need to put in a lot more effort to give them the training, exercise and enrichment they need and deserve. It's what having a high energy dog (or in your case, two) requires.
You / your wife have to wake up earlier to do something with them before you leave them alone for 9 hours. A walk, a run, the dog park (if they're dog social), running and sniffing wherever they want on long leashes (50ft-250ft) somewhere like a field.
And don't feed them out of a bowl because it's a wasted opportunity for training rewards and enrichment. Either use the food for training or make them work for it (snuffle mat, Kong, food dispensing toys). You also need to sacrifice room in the house to get two crates. Surely there's space somewhere. Get rid of or downsize furniture. It's incredibly cruel and risky to force two large dogs who have no outlets for their energy to be confined together
For the 9 hours you're at work, a dog walker at the 4.5 hr mark would make a huge difference. As would daycare a few times a week if they're social with other dogs. And when you and your wife get home, one of you needs to take them out for a walk or some kind of physical activity again. In addition to the physical activity, they also need mental enrichment and stimulation. Google dog enrichment/stimulation ideas, there are many resources. A sample schedule could be:
Morning
activity and exercise #1 ideas
- physical activity + sensory/environmental enrichment: take them on a long walk (let them stop and smell whatever they want). New places are even more enriching.
- physical activity + sensory/environmental enrichment: go to a field, park, forest, put them on a long leash and let them smell and go wherever they want
- physical activity: go for a run
- physical activity + social interaction: dog park
feeding ideas
- Kong (stuffed Kongs take even longer to finish - lots of recipes online)
- snuffle mat
- food dispensing toy like a StarkMark Bob-a-Lot or Kong Wobbler
- have a scavenger hunt in different rooms
some sort of enrichment or training session
- if one of your dogs likes to dig, give them a designated spot they're allowed to dig or make them a sandbox (get an actual sand box or fill a kiddie pool with sand and hide toys) to give them an appropriate outlet for their instincts
go to work and crate them separately
Afternoon
have a dog walker stop by midday to let them out to poop and pee and take them out for a walk
Evening
physical activity #2
make them work for dinner again
play time in the yard
another form of enrichment or a training session
What kind of training are you looking to do? A force free, positive reinforcement trainer (who is certified by a reputable program like The Academy for Dog Trainers or Karen Pryor Academy) would be really helpful because they can create a personalized training plan, figure out what you're doing wrong (because most of dog training is actually teaching the owner how to communicate with their dogs).
I have a 17 week old corgi who is an aggressive player also. She loves tug of war which tires her out immensely. She also loves being chased (while with a toy in her mouth). I purchased some interactive toys: https://www.amazon.com/Ottoson-Outward-Hound-Brick-Puzzle/dp/B0711Y9XTF as well as https://www.amazon.com/Outward-Hound-Tail-Teaser-Flirt/dp/B0042I5G2I and a slow feeder to keep her busy: https://www.amazon.com/KONG-Gyro-Dog-Toy-Small/dp/B01GP4824A/ref=sr_1_20?crid=NNEPFV9EKZ5&dchild=1&keywords=kong+slow+feeder+toy&qid=1597316957&s=pet-supplies&sprefix=kong+slow%2Cpets%2C187&sr=1-20.
If she is going into overdrive, she likely is overstimulated and needs an enforced nap.
This looks pretty close! Amazon
