I honestly have a wide range of them. I have some in my bug out bag that are about $12 from Amazon, some in my car, and some in my backpacking storage. Though, if I were to choose one and go with it, it would be this one. I have modified it to be even lighter, because I'm a maniac and need everything to be at it's lightest. The modification is basically taking off the head strap and using shockcord.
I apologize for the late response. Basically swapping your interior bulb to a Red LED would suffice.
However at night, I use the Red LED from my headlamp. Basically any red LED would work. It doesn't need to be insanely bright either.
I upgraded my headlamp to this and it’s one of my favorite pieces of gear.
I've used one of these since 2018: https://www.amazon.com/Nitecore-NU25-Lumen-Triple-Output/dp/B077Z3LNX9/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Nitecore&qid=1615751812&sr=8-2 and it's honestly done me well so far. Longest trip with it was a 5 day hike, but I've never had it actually die on me.
To clarify, the Nitecore NU25 (Amazon link).
I love it! Super light, rechargeable, very bright, decent battery life, redmode. Perfect for a weekend trip.
I'll recommend the Wowtac A2S NW as well - brighter and way longer battery. It's a little heavier, but that pays off with more battery life (and an interchangeable cell).
I just got this one yesterday...
Works great! And has a red light function Nitecore NU25 360 Lumen Triple Output - White, Red, High CRI - 0.99 Ounce Lightweight USB Rechargeable Headlamp with LumenTac Adapter https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077Z3LNX9/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fab_aIyCFbVG26HNG
Would like the Nitecore NU25 for an ultralight backpacking trip.
I'll spot you the 95 cents difference :)
I've been very pleased with this headlamp, which I got for camping, but obviously it works well for any flashlight needs: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077Z3LNX9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You can't be sure any model is going to stick around though.
Are you sure the NU25 controls changed? The Amazon listing for the NU25-Classic still show two buttons, and one of the Amazon reviews from August 30 specifically mentions the red light only switch. There are two NU25 models on Nitecore's site, the one that has the mode control is listed as the NU25-400 on Amazon, the original is listed separately as the NU25 also but is called the NU25-360.
The only headlamps you can find with red (solid) is $100+ ?
'affordable' is a relative term. Do you have a dollar amount that you'd like to stay under?
The Nitecore NU25 is $37 on Amazon right now. It's great for backpacking.
$10 for an Energizer special is 'cheap' to me. It's not waterproof or very bright - but will get the job done for simple (non hiking) tasks.
I would suggest you consider …
Swap out your basic enamel mug for a UCO collapsible cup and save 2oz.
Look into Nitecore NU25 head lamp 1.9oz w/ headband
You might also consider a second Kit for solo + pup trips.
- Buy a second smaller, lighter weight tent.
(My daughter hammock camps and her medium sized dog hops right in.)
One day I'll win these giveaways... LOL. Thanks as always for your generosity!
