So did Amazon leak the price of the new Shield and the release date?
$199.99 and January 16th. Kind of disappointed that they didn't lower the price. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
Also note how Amazon Video is shown in the list of apps in the picture below.
According to Amazon, it comes out on January 16, with a Pro version releasing at the end of the month.

~~Not going to lie, I'd much rather have a new Portable, though.~~
Found the new one on Amazon, has the new controller
Marketing info is the same/similar as the old Shield TV
e.g.
old
> Expand your entertainment with the best gaming streamer experience that’s 3X more powerful than Apple TV.
new
> It's everything you want in one game-changing device that's 3X faster than competitors
So its probably the same, which explains why they didn't talk about improved performance during the keynote
I've only had mine for 7 DAYS and I absolutely love it. I have several other streaming devices and this is now my favorite. I purchased it from Amazon. Link below. Also, I just ordered a Rii i28 mini keyboard for $18.99 but many people like the phone app.
Not entering.
ThenGeForce Now beta is included when you buy an NVIDIA Shield TV. In fact, that's how I got it. I know many of you can't afford a high end gaming PC, but maybe $188 (via Amazon) for the NVIDIA Shield is doable. Just a thought.
Can confirm, I have the '17 Shield TV Gaming Edition, the thing's an Emu powerhouse. Retroarch, an external hard drive, 8bitbo classic pro controller(good for everything other than 2 player fighting games, or serious shmups - wired fightstick is godmode.), hooked up to a Trinitron flat-panel CRT. I would not have paid that price, damn I think I paid $129 for it, maybe a year after release.
I'm not entirely certain to be honest. I believe it's the 2017 version? I believe it has the 16gb flash in it. But I will double check when I get home.
I got it last December on Amazon.

Nvidia Shield is the best you won't regret it worth every penny this the one I got NVIDIA SHIELD TV Gaming Edition | 4K HDR Streaming Media Player with GeForce NOW https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1NT9Y6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Shield TV Box I use now for the best experience. I used to use Steam Link but it's capped at 1080p.
Shield TV Box with hardwired ethernet gets me full 4k (2160p). No turning back! https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Gaming-Streaming-GeForce/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
The K1 is from my readings the best Android tablet on the market for gaming.
Sadly Nvidia discontinued it, I'm assuming they have a new model coming.
I only paid like $160 or so they are on Amazon for almost $300!
If Dokkan supported a controller I would have gotten the Nvidia Shield TV it just got the Oreo update to.
So I'm not sure what tablet would be budget friendly as literally I only use that tablet for dokkan and that's pretty much it.
NVidia Shield.
Runs Android TV so the app selection is pretty good. I mostly use Plex on mine but plenty of people use Kodi (which works fine with a USB hard drive as well as their media server), and Youtube, Netflix, etc have native apps.
About NZD$300 with the cheapest shipping option from Amazon, which is the same as the 4k Apple TV ($299/339 32/64GB).
Edit: If you decide you want a new TV instead, Sony's 2016 and later models have Android TV built in, will do almost everything the Shield will without the extra box (NVidia add game streaming and some other features that normal Android TV doesn't have).
This thing? $300? That seems a bit steep for a streaming device....what's the difference between this and Steam Link?
Edit: So I provide an article with legitimate information supporting the claim, and people downvote. Got it.
Edit 2: I was right. Amazon 4K HDR video being advertised with the new Shield! https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
First of all, check out the sticky in this sub for recommended add-ons. Incursion and Genesis Reborn are both a bit outdated at this point, and you may find more sources from something like Placenta or Gaia (though there are still some bugs being worked out in the newest version).
In terms of surfacing content you want to see, a good skin makes a big difference, and I've written a guide here about setting up Aura with custom widgets.
If you want some "better" management of shows and movies you watch or want to watch, check out Trakt.tv. An account at Trakt allows you to manage your own collection, create custom lists, and even watchlists for things you want to watch, as well as keeping track of what shows you're watching, and what episodes you've seen. Most popular Kodi add-ons integrate with Trakt, so even across different add-ons or devices, that information stays in sync.
If you want better or more reliable links, I'd recommend looking into either Real-Debrid or Premiumize. Both are paid "premium" services that gain you faster, more reliable links, as well as pairing well with Gaia to allow torrent, and in the case of PM, Usenet, streaming.
Gaia has also integrated Orion recently, and while there are a few bugs to be worked out, Orion can greatly reduced scraping speed, but it may be worth paying for the basic package in the future, as their free account has a very low limit on links, and they run out pretty quickly.
Lastly, but certainly not leastly, the device you're using can also have a huge impact. I have used Kodi on my laptop, phone, and multiple Fire Sticks, to varying degrees of success. Everything runs much better on my laptop, followed by my phone, with Fire Sticks coming in last for me. Many users on this sub will recommend an Nvidia Shield, but you may also have good results with other Android TV boxes, or even a Raspberry Pi.
Good luck!
Also the game controller bundle is also on sale for $179.99 (the original price of the streaming bundle).
It's only $20 off. But if you're thinking about gaming even a little bit, or want always listening Google Assistant, it's cheaper than buying the streaming bundle and adding a controller later. The controller by itself retails for $60, and I don't think I've ever seen the controller go on sale.
Edit: Amazon has the same price for the controller edition. But not on the one without the controller. https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Streaming-Player-Controller/dp/B01N1NT9Y6?crid=AINDDPS7JGVE
Seems like you're right
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/shield/android-tv/
Under full specs
> Processor: NVIDIA® Tegra® X1 processor with a 256-core GPU and 3 GB of RAM
Disappointing, still the same Tegra X1 from 2015
BTW for current SHIELD TV owners, the features announced for the new SHIELD TV will come to current SHIELD device through an OTA software upgrade, available in January.
Edit:
As pointed out by u/axiumone their website still shows the old Shield TV
Amazon has the new one
Marketing info is the same/similar as the old Shield TV
e.g.
old
> Expand your entertainment with the best gaming streamer experience that’s 3X more powerful than Apple TV.
new
> It's everything you want in one game-changing device that's 3X faster than competitors
Edit2:
In the coming months, the Google Assistant on Android TV will come to the NVIDIA SHIELD, along with all Android TVs in the US running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or Android 7.0 Nougat, such as the AirTV Player, Sharp Aquos, Sony Bravia, Xiaomi Mi Box, and more.
Sounds like getting a Shield TV is going to be my best bet. Looks like they're going for about $200 on Amazon. But it looks like, according to this forum post, I would need to get one of these for the IR reciever so that my Harmony can control it.
As an added bonus, I like that I'd be able to play Knights of the Old Republic in HD. I bought it on android when it came out, then realized that it was a mistake because touch controls are just cumbersome for that game.
The only apps I really use on the Roku are Netflix, PLEX, HBO Now, and YouTube. Bonus points if it works with Booksonic. I think that if I sell my Apple TV 3rd Gen (being used seldomly in my bedroom projector), Roku 3, and Steam Link, I should be able to afford the Nvidia Shield. Hopefully I can do it by just selling the Apple TV and Steam Link, since neither of those are being used on a regular basis.
Question though, does the Shield just use the Android apps for Plex/Netflix/etc or are there specific "Shield Versions" of the apps that are optimized for controller/remote use?
No, the boxes themselves are not illegal. I have two of these
https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Gaming-Streaming-GeForce/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
This is just a fancy "Android Box". The boxes you are talking about are usually cheap chinese boxes. Again, the box is not illegal but the cheap chinese boxes might not last very long or will never be update where as the one I linked to above continues to be updated every so often. I think I have been through 3 or 4 major updates.
The software that these boxes you are referring to falls into a sort of gray area. Last I checked most came with Kodi pre installed.
Some have a fork of Kodi
Now there is nothing ilegal with Kodi or a fork of Kodi. Where things get a bit messy is the addons that are available for Kodi. I have not messed with Kodi in sometime but a major addon at the time was Exodus. Exodus was basically a way to pirate content. Search for whatever you want to watch and the addon would look for a source.
There are now some pretty good stand alone .apk's that are very easy to use. These boxes you are referring to might come with a few of theses apk's and Kodi installed.
Again it's kind of a gray area. I know there have been sellers of these boxes that have got into a bit of trouble. Same with people you make the Kodi addons and apk's. There was an .apk called Terrarium TV. The developer sent out an update one day and basically killed the app and vanished. I am guessing his .apk became a little to big and he was feeling the pressure.
You also have IPTV. Recently a lot of IPTV providers were shut down. Several different international police agencies were involved.
I give all this info to highlight that as an end user it is kinda a gray area. I don't know of anyone who has been sent to jail for using any of the above but the people who provide the above have had their share of issues.
The people who sell these boxes see it as a way to make a quick buck. Buy a bunch of cheap boxes. Load them up with pirating software that available for free and sell the boxes with a huge markup.
There is nothing stopping me from loading any of the above listed ways of pirating content on Nvidia Shield but I would never do such a thing.
Edit: I submitted my post to soon and left out the following:
Concerning what you can do? Nothing! The people who sell these boxes come and go. Make new account if they get banned. On facebook if a group gets shutdown a new one will emerge. Unless you are willing to make it a life goal and spend all your time and recoreces fighting this fight there is not anything you can do. In some counties there are no anti piracy laws and as a result a lot of servers that host content are located in those countries. You will find yourself fighting a battle you will never win.
you can literally replace their cableboxes with this https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Gaming-Streaming-GeForce/dp/B01N1NT9Y6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1550172604&sr=8-3&keywords=nvidia+shield which is normally $170

They start at half of that on Amazon But, fair enough if you don't like Nvidia.

I prefer the Xiaomi Mi Box or nVIDIA Shield for android tv os and voice search in SPMC. You can buy the Xiaomi Mi Box at your local walmart for $69.

Sorry for the confusion. Here is what I am talking about. Amazon offers two versions. One is labeled as a Pro Media Server and the other is a Streaming Media Player.
I don't want to stream shit. I just want to play emulated games from this device to my TV. No interaction with anything else.
What are your thoughts on using the $199 version for local emulation (N64, Dreamcast, PSX, etc.)?
Here is the Streaming Version: $199 https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1495148739&sr=8-3&keywords=Nvidia%2BShield&th=1
Here is the Server Version: $299 https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Pro-Home-Media-Server/dp/B01MYV94H3/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1495149341&sr=8-4&keywords=Nvidia+Shield
What kind of things are you trying to accomplish with your setup? You'd probably be a lot more future proof by getting an Nvidia Shield for $70 more.
that would be great and all but Here is the list of games compatible with the nvidia shield tv since not all of them are compatible with the shield K1 which is the more comparable device to the swtich, tomb raider while in this list is not compatible with the tablet version of the shield. another thing to add is that Nvidia has the geoforce now program which is basically NVIDIA's version of playstation Now where you stream the game from a cloud connected device in to the local one but that wouldn't really count as the shield actually playing those games
There is a Shield tablet, but there's also Shield TV, which is a dedicated streaming device similar to the Roku or Amazon Fire. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1NT9Y6
I think you might want to lower your price on the Shield, the brand new one coming out in a couple weeks cost the same amount as you're asking.
https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-TV-Streaming-Media-Player/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
Supposedly there’s a new model releasing soon-ish. I think this is the one I picked up. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N1NT9Y6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KL.NDbX3V3JM0
NVIDIA SHIELD TV Gaming Edition | 4K HDR Streaming Media Player with GeForce NOW https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N1NT9Y6
Do you want the gaming controller as well or just the controller for watching/streaming
This is a good price. Get this one.
https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Gaming-Streaming-GeForce/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
Personally this has been the greatest investment
https://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Streaming-Media-Player-Version/dp/B01N1NT9Y6
You can add a microSD for more storage. Raspberry Pi is cheaper but not as powerful. This will do PS1/N64/PSP/Some Dreamcast games with ease!
