Not sure if your chair has caster wheels or not. If it does - these are specifically designed to solve your problem. It replaces the plastic crap that comes with your chair with a soft rollerblade wheel. I had this problem and this worked for me.

Best upgrade for a chair is rubber wheels
Basically roller blade wheels.
A nutless monkey could install them.
Once your have them, you’ll be gliding around your luxury vinyl with your pinky out.
You can buy wheels like these on Amazon. A bit more expensive than the regular plastic, but they roll a lot better and they don't scratch hardwood floor. Definitely worth the purchase.
I'm not at work today, but here is the Amazon link, where I purchased them:
Office Chair Caster Wheels (Set of 5) - Heavy Duty & Safe for All Floors Including Hardwood - Perfect Replacement for Desk Floor Mat - Rollerblade Style w/Universal Fit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTIG4GE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_-m9.Cb78WX281
Here's an (expensive) example of the kind of wheels I'm talking about.
I have a set of wheels like these that I got for ~$20 almost 3 years ago and have been using on hardwood floor for about 2 years of that time with no other protection. No gouges or scratches.
They're slightly "squishy" and grippy, almost like they're made of really sturdy silicone (I'm sure they're not at all, but that's kinda how they feel). Anything smallish just squishes into the wheel; you'd literally have to be rolling over gravel or some such to scratch noticeably.
Depending on if the rail is imbedded or protruding, you could try a combination of the options listed or just putting a mat (rubber or vinyl depending on carpet vs floor) and using rubber caster wheels like these.
Can't vouch for any myself, but this is the first amazon result:
Office Chair Caster Wheels (Set of 5) - Heavy Duty & Safe for All Floors Including Hardwood - Perfect Replacement for Desk Floor Mat - Rollerblade Style w/Universal Fit https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTIG4GE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_pkvjEbJMAAGBH
I hear they have them with dual casters (or dual something) that work better than the big wheels. The single and big wheels make it difficult to do short distance scooting around.
I doubt you'd find those in caster form (they're designed to be driven from the axle). If you want an omnidirectional unpowered roller, a roller bearing would be so much simpler, but I don't think they make those for office chairs either.
What they do make is roller blade wheels for office chairs, which I can say from personal experience offer basically no resistance to rolling or changing direction. Like, you have to pay attention sitting down because if your leg taps the chair before your butt is on the seat, the chair will roll out from under you.
Let's say you owned that apartment. If you had to replace the wood floor after a decade because of your rolling around, that would be some very expensive rolling around.
They make thicker pile rugs that do not bunch up. Or buy a chair wheels that doesn't dig into the floor: https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE
> GUARANTEED NOT TO DAMAGE FLOORS - Encased with soft, smooth polyurethane, our casters are safe to use on hardwood, carpet, tile, and more without leaving any scratches or marks. No desk chair mat necessary!
I'm 6'4'' and installed these as soon as I got the Embody this past weekend. I can't say I noticed any height issues with the stock wheels though, so it might not matter much. Either way, they're much more silent and easy to glide than the HM wheels.
I can personally certify that a few sets of these lasted at least two years (I left the company, they were still on the chairs) in the nasty environment of a machine shop.
I dunno how important durability is for the average person, but I think those in particular are great!
Here are the ones I got for my chair(s) and my wife's chair.
They take 70 seconds to install, and this link is to the original inventor's product. Support small businesses!!! ^^by ^^giving ^^money ^^to ^^amazon, ^^yeah ^^I ^^know. ^^^sometimes ^^^it ^^^is ^^^the ^^^only ^^^way ^^^they ^^^ship ^^^them!
They make roller blade wheels for these: Amazon
Not OP, but these are the ones I bought and it solved this issue for me on my Leap v2.
I have a steelcase amia chair and I had a similar issue so I bought these The Original Office Chair Caster Wheels Rollerblade Style and they are Soo much better! Definitely worth the money man my office chair is so dam smooth it's rediculous. You ever road on a longboard before? That's what these feel like on a office chair
I have a Steelcase Gesture with Headrest. The wheels are about 10% higher glide (rolling) resistance and 75% higher micro adjust resistance (when the wheel has to swivel around its post) when on the carpet. The wheel I bought was https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE.
I just bought these from Amazon. They were a couple bucks more than the cheapest ones on Amazon but I spent that knowing they invented the trend and they seems to do an outstanding job on replacing products with issues.

Easiest install on earth. They make no noise and handle carpet and wood like a dream. I bought a used Aeron Classic and it came with the harder casters meant for shorter pile carpet. My chair is on wood so it was a couple bucks more than buying a chair Nat from Costco. Plus I get to joke with my kids that, “Daddy put rims on my office chair. “
Kind of seems like they don't roll because of the lack of grip on a smooth-surfaced floor. You could switch them out with some "rollerblade" style wheels..
Did this to two office chairs and they're so much easier to move around in. Plus they won't damage the floor since the wheels are polyurethane.
Completely off topic....
OP. buy these wheels for your chair. You have the right floor (any hard floor) for them. It is well worth it, especially if you work from home.
Seriously. Buy them (or any other rollerblade style wheels)
Its an easy replacement. Just flip your chair over, pull the wheels out, pop the new ones in.
Polyurethane wheels ("rollerblade wheels") - worth it if you have a few bucks to spare. chair will roll better anyway, and no worries about scuffs on your floor. I bought these: Office Chair Caster Wheels (Set... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTIG4GE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
edit: fixed typo
I recommend upgrading the wheels. Amazon has a nice pair of roller blade types that are amazing to roll across shop floors.

Once you do the repair, get yourself some rollerblade chair wheels. They are on Amazon and they have kept my laminate and luxury vinyl plank looking great. Be careful, as the chairs will roll very easily! If you have a caliper or ruler you can measure the diameter of the peg that inserts into the chair.

You should look into rollerblade style wheels made for office chairs. They're a better/cleaner alternative to a floor mat These are the ones I'm using for my chair and they work great. They won't damage the floor and yoire chair will glide!

You can get replacement wheels on Amazon if you want to upgrade them. It's a fairly easy fix, too.
Here's one example, though there are cheaper options too. (37$)

You can get some on Amazon for around $30. It's by far one of the best investments you'll make. Your floors will thank you.

Like I said though, have never had a problem
Not sure on the design on the dx racer, but with some chairs you can go to Lowes\ hardware store and find caster wheels that will work and have the same size stem. EDIT or something like this https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Replacement/dp/B01CTIG4GE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486506089&sr=8-1&keywords=the+office+oasis+caster+wheels
The ones I got were actually a little more expensive: https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Replacement/dp/B01CTIG4GE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1486506089&sr=8-1&keywords=the+office+oasis+caster+wheels
I opted to buy these because of the high number of reviews with good ratings. I figured I already spent $300 on a chair, might as well get a good set of wheels for them. Although the ones you linked above looks pretty good too.
I highly suggest you upgrade your wheels to this style and lose the plastic mat.
Man, if you have chairs on "hard" surfaces... get the rollerblade wheels. You go from "scraping" with every move, to silently gliding around.
You just yank them off and push new ones in. They are designed to be replaced.
These are the ones that I got, although they are a bit more expensive now than they were when I got them: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTIG4GE/
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTIG4GE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_pWd3krfKitARg
I got these for my HM and they're great
We have hardwood floors throughout our house, so when my wife and I got new chairs for our home office we ordered a set of these for each: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Basically, they're soft Rollerblade wheels - they don't damage the floor at all and I assume they would work really well on carpet too (depending on the thickness). We've had them for the last 2 and a half years, no issues.
Replace his chair wheels with roller blade chair wheels! Makes a huge difference! ETA: here’s a link to some on Amazon. they just click on!
I highly recommend getting a set of rollerblade style casters for your chair. They're much better all-around, but especially for hard wood floors.

I've wanted the headrest for a while now, can you link me the arms?
Totally worth it, even if you're on carpet. I got mine from Amazon
What about changing the wheels on the chair to rollerblade wheels? The larger diameter and softer material should help them roll over the edge of the mat easier.
About a year ago I replaced my old wheels with this wheels
I'm currently using the Office Oasis rollerblade casters on my Herman Miller Aeron. Smooth and quiet.
Get a used Herman Miller Aeron for $300 off of Craigslist.
Then buy a new set of casters - https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE/ref=sr_1_1_sspa
I don't know how they are with thread tie ups, but we bought these last year and love them. Smooth rolling and sturdy.
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
For the sake of ease, comfort and keeping that rug in good shape. Try switching the wheels out to these. They are a game changer:
I was in a similar situation for several months at the beginning of COVID, and each thread is the same - people insist that there are 2 or 3 chairs worth buying, they're all absurdly expensive, and if that's out of your price range, you should buy them used. There's a weird hivemind surrounding office chairs on Reddit for some reason.
Well, I think used chairs are fucking nasty. The thought of the years of farts, butt sweat, and god knows what else it's been exposed to is too gross for me. Unless they're replacing the foam and fabric surfaces and deep steam cleaning the rest (doubtful), I would not pay several hundred dollars to sit in someone else's funk.
There's nothing wrong with a less expensive chair. I went with this guy from Staples, and am still loving it months later. I popped some new rollerblade-style wheels on it, and am perfectly happy with it. The chair often goes on sale, and Staples has coupon codes that are easily googled. I spent about $150 for a solid, comfortable new fart-free chair. My back pain went away, and I can glide silently over my hardwood floors.
I've had for about 5 months now.. It's a huge improvement over my previous modern leather/metal chair which had no lumbar support. The chair is a little pricey, but compared to other chairs with similar feature sets, I think it's the best value for money. Sitting for long periods of time is far more comfortable and I am very pleased with the materials and build quality. It shipped in robust packaging; I did but skate wheels as an add-on as I do have hardwood floors and it guides almost silently.
The wheels I bought are here:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hope that helps!
They are literally the best thing ever.
Get roller blade wheels for your chair and you can roll anywhere.
Seriously. I have these. They're awesome.
No but I did buy some Rollerblade Style casters for it, and they are silent and super smooth when rolling around.
In case your chair has 'normal' wheels, it's totally worth grabbing some roller-blade wheels for them.
I've had these for 2 years with no issues, cept hair and fur getting caught in there, which will probably happen with any of the castors. I shed a lot.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thanks. Just looked at my Amazon history and it was these that I purchased for the chair. They work really well on low pile carpet/rugs too.
On the color, I'll be completely honest, I didn't even pay attention to it until after I ordered, so I've got whatever the default options are on Hive. Looking at the receipt I have the graphite frame/chassis/base and pellicle graphite fabric, it's a nice dark grey, almost looks black at first glance until you get close.
Regarding the adjustments, here's a document they provide on how to adjust the Aeron, will give you a little better idea of all the possible options and what they do:
Similarly they listing for all their other chairs here:
https://www.hermanmiller.com/customer-service/chair-adjustments/
You can't lock it in a reclined position, however you can adjust the tension on the recline to reduce/increase the pressure it takes to recline. When the tension is released all the way it doesn't really push back much at all and just sort of follows your body, though it will always go back to straight when you get out of the chair. With the tension increased, it does start to push back a lot more but even at it's strongest it's still got give, I don't believe you can lock it in an un-reclined position either. As for how far back it goes, rough estimate, I'd that it reclines close to but not quite 45 degrees.
If you have the tilt limiter and seat angle option, it allows you to pitch the seat forward substantially for when you're leaning into your workstation for longer periods of time of computer work, and when you want a flat seat you can lock it back into the horizontal position.
I got the PostureFit back instead of the lumbar adjustment, I like it but I could see some people being more interested in a traditional lumbar adjustment like you get without the PostureFit. Instead of more like a bar/pillow along your back, the PostureFit is two semi-adjustable pads that your back will press against when you lean into the back mesh and it sinks in a little.
Loving the chair so far, though I haven't been using it for full 8 hour work days as I am currently unemployed (thankfully the money for the chair was given with the assumption we weren't going to have jobs much longer and weren't going to be returning the chairs), but in my more extended sessions in it, it's been very much worth it. The old cheapo $150 chair I got from Office Depot had been kicking my ass (literally and figuratively) for a while and I didn't even realize how bad it was until I stopped using it all the time. I'm closer to the upper weight limit on the chair, and 6' tall, it fits nice but I suspect if I was a even closer to the weight limit I would wearing the chair out pretty quick based on how much the seat mesh sags under my current weight.
Also something to consider as a 3rd party add-on, I got these wheels from Amazon for my previous chair, they are essentially rollerblade wheels on a caster and work with most office chairs, including the Aeron (just tested): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE They're sold as an alternative to a floor mat, which I also recently got and part of the reason I haven't moved these to the Aeron yet, but they would glide nice on a floor mat as well. My carpet pile is a little on the shaggy side so the wheels got fuzz caught up in the bearing over time that wouldn't have happened on a floor mat, but even still they roll a lot smoother on carpet than regular casters.
Pro tip: Get some caster wheels for your chair. Your beautiful hardwood floor will thank you. They cost about $30. https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE
Consider an alternative ;)
If you go ahead with your variant, are you planning to remove existing or sit your board on top?
[Here](www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE) is the one I bought. I needed it as I run a mat on top of carpet and without the extra height the center would rub across the mat
That would be these and they are great on carpet and hard floors. I've had mine on my chair for a few years and they are still in great shape.
Definitely get the multi-surface casters, unless you're planning on using an area rug. The multi surface/hardwood casters are soft so they don't scratch the hardwood; the rug casters are hard plastic.
Basically: hard surface, soft wheels. Soft surface, hard wheels
Also, it might be worth looking into the roller blade type casters
Just saying, you can try some of:

I am super happy with mine.
Looks like someone on the Herman Miller sub bought these without issue.

Rollerblade type wheels for my desk chair. They are fantastically smooth
Oh, man, those floor scratches. Switch your stock wheels to some rollerblade wheels. Your floor will thank you.
Are there casters taller than https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE? These are the tallest I could find, I don't think it's quite enough. I need about 3.5" or so inches over my current leaps to get my arms straightened out.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_1 I was considering these, they're a bit pricey compared to others on Amazon but they're the most purchased/also come with a warranty.
Same, although the Aeron at work isn't sized right. I'm 5'7" and find myself only using the front half of the chair due to pressure points. Find the seat pan to be too deep.
Bought a Steelcase Amia (used-like new from Amazon Warehouse for $300...still had tags/plastic covering the legs) and it is the best purchase I have made. Also like the adjustable arm rests for the different angles as well as being able to lower them to get the chair out of the way/under the desk.
This series of reviews helped, because there were no local chair retailers (who weren't intended to be used for office build outs): https://blog.szynalski.com/category/seating/
Haven't tried the Leap yet.
Also upgraded the wheels so I wouldn't need a chair mat https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE/
Get some wheels
Update: Anywhere I roll my computer chair (DX Racer) it causes this, even if I am not sitting in it. Other chairs do not. The only thing that has changed is that I put these caster wheels on - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/
What's the difference between those and say these: https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE
Or these: https://www.amazon.com/Rollerblade-Office-Chair-Casters-Wheels/dp/B076CRCKNT
May be too late, but https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01CTIG4GE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 are great.
I think maybe they mean these:
https://www.amazon.com/Office-Chair-Caster-Wheels-Set/dp/B01CTIG4GE
Hey op, can I suggest an upgrade for that chair? Make it a lot better on that surface at least. Doesn't need to be these, but this style is just amazing.
Beautiful place. A tip though - don’t kill the aesthetic with the chair mats, get some of these and roll in style. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01CTIG4GE/
