> Publishers must sell their books 20% below the list price of a physical copy
Wrong, Amazon lost that fight when publishers threatened to pull their content. That's why some Kindle books state "this price was set by the publisher", for example.
> Your calculation regarding NetFlix is a bit naive
You're naive to believe a platform provider should set the pricing structure of another company's subscriptions. The user has already paid for the platform - and Apple adds no value to a Netflix subscription by taking 30%, then not hosting any content or contributing in any way besides "protection" money to permit the NetFlix service to operate.
> Additional subscribers add to the revenue
30% obliterates any profit (which may be razor-thin and lower than 10% on some of these services); and then in-app subscriptions can't be applied outside the app. So it's a more expensive and worse product. That none of the major content providers are taking Apple's deal should be a great big fat clue that it's unacceptable for any of them.
Which means that right now, everyone's developing new products for HTML5 if they can; if they need to make a native app they're writing it for Android. Apple still has the market leader with the iPad, but the market can be brutal. If they're not careful, Amazon's $100 Kindle eReader & all-platform Kindle app will finish eating iBook sales this Christmas; the next-generation of low-cost Android devices arrive and make the iPad look quaint; and by the time iPad 3 arrives, it will be late, overpriced, locked down - and nobody will care.
