There is an old book called "On Being a Photographer : A Practical Guide" by David Hurn and Bill Jay that spends some time on this exact subject. It's a great book overall, definitely worth a read. Here it is on Amazon.

Both really good and thought provoking, about the essence of being a photographer as part of your life. They're not flashy and some of the language might seem about bit dated however they are classics for a reason, that being said, they are both accessible and easy to understand rather than some of the other 'classic texts' which are required reading at photoschool.
Their books stand the test of time by two masters of their craft - enjoy
