It depends on what you consider too expensive. My Esee Expat is my favorite battoning knife, but it's $80.
This "Ontario Spec Plus Alpha Machete" is currently on sale for $35. I have it and it works well. It's quite thick, so more rugged than most.

For cordage, it depends on your resources and usage.
Intestine is very strong. It's used in some tennis rackets and out performs most synthetics, but it's very stiff.
Sinew is very good, but requires several animals to make enough.
Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) has been used to make bow strings and is easy to process, if you have it available.
Cedar also makes good rope, but isn't that good at making small, thin ropes.
