He's the main character who brokered the alliance between the Vatican, Sicilian Mafia, which was basically kneecapped and exhiled under Mussolini, and the Vatican at the end of WW2. One of the main reasons Italy fell so fast. Afterwards, They were afraid of a godless communist uprising in Italy and the Vatican was willing to wash mafia drug money through the IOR and fund CIA cutout companies to carry out their black operations overthrowing leftist governments around the world.

The Vatican Bank was essentially a money laundering front for CIA, the Mafia, and far-right terrorist groups (especially in Italy) during the Years of Lead and Operation Gladio.

At the center was Banco Ambrosiano, whose chairman was a member of the P2 Masonic Lodge, an illegal ultra-right secret organization which had deep ties to journalists, parliamentarians, industrialists and bankers, and military leaders, including the heads of major intelligence agencies. Silvio Berlusconi was a member of P2, among other major figures in Italy.

The bank was dissolved 1981 in light of documents revealing their role in money laundering and working with the CIA/Mafia, in which investigations of the far-right increased after the 1980 Bologna train station bombing, which killed 85 people, claimed by a far-right terrorist group, which itself had links to P2.

Sounds stranger than fiction but reality of often is. The extent to which the international right-wing network of deep state, clear state, and criminal/terrorist groups organized against the popular ferment of the left is a basically ignored part of history. Gladio is a catchall word for these efforts. What happened in Belgium regarding Gladio is even more horrific, because it was less political and more strictly horrifically criminal, as in serial murders and child sex abuse (Brabant Killers, Marc Dutroux)
