Why don't you take a look at these Infinity Primus' that are going on sale right now. I was deciding between the AJ Pioneers last year. I listened to the AJ's first hand and was underwhelmed.
Just so happened around that time frame I saw the Infinitiys on sale and never looked back. Bought the whole set. Absolutely love them and couldn't be happier. Have not had a single problem with them other than the initial center channel came packaged with a broken tweeter cone, which Amazon resolved for me quickly.
Only caveat I will say is that the center channel, never, drops in price and stays around $200.
Good luck! Hopefully this was helpful.
As a follow up the Chane choice, how would these Infinity Primus speakers compare? Basically I'm looking at the $300 mark for a pair and would like to get the best bang for my buck since the Chanes are also about $150 each . Thanks!
4 of these for mids/highs: [link]

2 of these for bass: [link]

These guys? What makes you suggest them over the BICs?
Okay, are these infinity primus towers better?
If you intend to that then, with the $500 budget I'd do this:
L/R mains $320: [link]
Center $150: [link]
Keep in mind that you lose the LFE in surround without a subwoofer. Even if you choose to go with the towers/center channel I'd plan for a subwoofer as your next addition.
70% TV says yeah, probably should have a center channel. Center channel should be timbre matched to the L/R mains which typically means same company and same line of speakers. $600 is a tight budget for towers, this is what I'd likely get:
L/R mains $300: [link]
Center $295: [link]
Good foundation to build around, nice sounding speakers.
Which models are these? [link]
The Micca is a good speaker but there will be no subwoofer in that budget. This is what I'd get:
Receiver $110: [link]
Speakers $230 (Towers): [link]
Speakers $170 (bookshelf): [link]
These might be a good bet.
Opinion on Infinity P363BK speakers?
If you can stretch your budget a teensy bit, amazon.com has the well reviewed Infinity Primus P363s on sale for $109 each. That's a hell of a steal for brand new speakers, and almost $100 lower for the pair than their usual sale price.
Pair it with something like a Yamaha 2 channel receiver, and for $350 you'll have an envious setup.
Do you have any thoughts on these? I can pick up 3 of them on craigslist for $200 and this receiver for another $175. I was going to start with 2x Micca MB42x with a cheap receiver. Would you say that would be worth the extra money?
Looks like they might be back up to 199 each at frys.
They are currently 149 at amazon though
Great advice, thanks! Just FYI - I impulsively scooped a deal on craigslist for this Infinity Primus combo: 2 Tower P363s, 2 Bookshelf P143s, and the Center PC350.
Annnd it's gone
Amazon Link for the curious
Too bad you missed the sale, these were $99 each yesterday at frys and amazon: [link]
FYI, your going to need dual 8"s if you want to shake the room.
The receiver is fine. Understand though that you aren't going to get a decent pair of tower speakers for $170. If you want towers, the least expensive that I'd get would be: [link]
In either beech or black. If you can squeeze a bit more then these would be my choice $330: [link]
Fair enough, if you have a little stretch in your budget get this all at once or, if not, get just 2 speakers at a time.
Receiver $200: [link]
Speakers $340 pair: [link]
That'll do what you want and sound quite good doing it.
What do you think about this?
If you have a Frys near you I would recommend this at $99 each (when they are on sale in-store only):
If you don't live near a Frys, Amazon sometimes will pricematch it with free shipping so you can look out for that.
There is also a list here for speakers if your on a budget.
Have to suggest these. I just bought them and I'm thinking of eventually moving them to the back for a 5.1 setup.
I know you're buying other stuff, but for the price, free shipping they're a steal.
