Fun fact: The original edition of the game said it required the board game by Avalon Hill titled Outdoor Survival , found here https://www.amazon.com/Outdoor-Survival-About-Wilderness-Skills/dp/B001AOAB9A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1513634231&sr=8-1&keywords=outdoor+survival+game. It really depends what you find interesting in your games. Its really just a framework for assembling skill challenges around the wilderness itself. Most of it is probably there for historical reasons. If you just want combat single shot adventures then run that. If you like role-playing social encounters and court intrigue then run that. Play the game you want, leave the parts you don't.
Here's a listing for it on Amazon, though the game itself predates Amazon and has been long out of print. Avalon Hill was sold to WotC and plundered. I suspect eBay or various old wargame sites will have copies.
As board games go, we're not talking grand strategy or elaborate planning. The rules are simple and play pretty quickly. I suggest compensating with more beer.

You could play the original:
Outdoor Survival the game that inspired and informed wilderness travel in D&D if you wanted to get old school and could find a copy that wasn't ridiculously priced.
Mouseguardis noted for its themes of protagonist versus world, although it is about paying sword wielding mice.
Perseverant is a game about survival in harsh landscapes.
In looking around it seems like this is an area that isn't heavily populated. Maybe I should add it to my list of games to take a whack at.
