Do yourself a favor and check THESE out. They are ultra cost effective and put out a ton of good light. They chain together and look really clean. If you search for "Barrina" on here you can see some examples.
I got these recently and I’m pretty happy with them! I have 3 on my shelf with my more light hungry succs. 2 on one shelf with my less light hungry, and 1 on my prop shelf. I got them because in my sunniest spot they were still etiolating. New growth is all compact now, and even a little sunstress and some blooms! The lights are about 6-10in above my plants..
These are probably too long for that shelf tho. I know Barrina has 2ft lights like this that are actually made for plants but I’m not sure if the specs are right for succs. My lights stick out past my shelf so it’s not the prettiest but it’s functional. From my understanding the cheap clip plant lights from amazon don’t really do much of anything.

We got these LED lights on Amazon
Anything labeled ‘grow light’ are usually the red/blue lights (which aren’t fun on the eyes when you’re working next to them) or are a lot more expensive. We had some professional fluorescents before but needed a lot more of them with these shelves.
Since plants generally need that daylight color temperature we’re hoping these are good. The main thing we’ll find out is if they’re putting off enough light but we have 3-4 per shelf so we‘ll see! Reviews of those lights have people saying they use them as grow lights and they work great.
Edit: mounted with zip ties. Super quick and easy. Just need to zip tie and clean up the wiring on the sides.
I kept seeing posts about these lights so I bought them on Amazon for about $40. My dad helped install them, instructions pretty straight forward. So far, seems well worth the 40 bucks for LED lighting.

You’ll need to look for lights with a kelvin around 6500K, and you’ll need 2000 lumens per each square foot you need to light. These Kihungs are popular around here. Also search for ‘Barrina t5’ on Amazon, and you’ll find nearly identical lights, just a different brand and quantity.
I added the link of the grow lights I got. There's 6 of them, so I thought it was worth the price. I got the shelf from home depot, they're about 90 not on sale. I had to find a shelf that was 4 feet long because of the lights, I didn't want to find new lights that were shorter. You could add them to anything, so it doesn't have to be a new shelf. You could get creative and spend less than me :)

I went with this set of 6 integrated LED strips from Amazon. They can be plugged in or hard wired. I used one of those light bulb socket outlet adapters to plug them in.
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded electric with built-in ON/OFF switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_PBJRP97KN4F9FC5AW7V9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
2 for each row. 10in above tray
I recently did a ton of research and settled on these. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_wwNZFbP6TJ4CK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 . You can remove the plastics around the LEDS. and then put 6 inches or so above plant 12-14 hours a day. My plants are loving it. I have four on a shelf. Maybe over board but they seem to like it
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded electric with built-in ON/OFF switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_fabt1_TzERFbMKK0SW5
Here's that link to the ones I bought for the seed starting. I like them alot. You can daisy chain them together to make one switch work as many lights as you want. I do three and three. Very bright and solid. Admittedly the little clips they come with to mount them a super cheap, but double faced tape would work well to for them.
I use Barrina 4' 6500K LED T5s and they seem to work really well. I have 4 of them on one shelf, and then 3 each on the other two shelves (they came in a six pack, so i bought 12 and currently have 10 in use). They haven't hurt my electricity bill much at all, and I've had my plants under them for about 3 months. All of them are doing really well, even the ones i had outside. I keep various succulents and cacti and have seen no etiolation on them, though I think they would have, had I not increased my lighting. (Originally, I only had two lights per shelf.)
I recommend getting a light timer for the setup as well, so that you don't have to worry about it. Mine is on for about 15 hours a day. The Barrina lights are not specifically marketed as "grow lights," but that's fine for my purposes as the grow lights usually have a purple color that gives me migraines or are much more expensive than the "shop lights." Just make sure it's at least 6500K.
Its called a LED T5. Each light is 20watts, 6500k temp, 2,200 lumens. Amazon has a bunch of different sizes, lengths and strength but these are the ones I bought. My BF helped me pry off the plastic "tubing" or whatever it's called, so its flush to the shelf and allows the LEDS to point directly downwards instead of hitting the tube and dispersing into your eyes

OP here. At someone’s suggestion on this subreddit, I bought these lights on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share. I put all six of them a few inches above my Echeveria and keep them on for 12 hours each day. I know from past experience that Echeveria Afterglow will IMMEDIATELY flatten out if it doesn’t get enough sun, and I bet if I put it outside tomorrow it would tighten back up. So that must mean my grow lights aren’t strong enough, right?? I can’t keep them outside because I live in Phoenix, Arizona, where our 120 degree weather will kill them. I’m just trying to get them through the summer by bringing them inside. Does someone have stronger grow lights they can recommend? Price is not really an issue for me.
I'm not sure what you mean by the lighting unit - but the shelf was a gift from a friend (she was getting rid of it) and I ordered these lights off of Amazon! I based it off of the recommendations on the overwinter megathread on r/succulents (found in sidebar) and my budget. Since this was my first grow light set up, I didn't want to spend a lot of $. We'll see how it goes this winter :)
Hey there! I have some like these
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded electric with built-in ON/OFF switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_gxqDFbQH7N6JS
I believe I bought cheaper ones on Amazon. They’re absolutely amazing, my succs are veryyy happy under these strips. But BE WARNED- they are 4ft long.
Mine do fine in ambient humidity, which is usually around 40-60%. They do appreciate lots of light, though. In winter they can take direct sunlight that is filtered through a window. I don't have any good windows, so I use artificial lights (these) from October to May. In summer I put them outside in filtered light.
I believe these are the ones although the posting has changed slightly but I assume they are the same.
I have them set up pretty much as close as I can to my succs and I get growth my whole canadian winter... Except my agaves, they don't budge lol
I glued them to my shelf. They work great for growing plants
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
This is a lot better value Imo. You can definitely grow large healthy heads of lettuce under regular shop lights. Other plants might need more but I’ve grown multiple varieties of lettuce, cilantro, mint, and dill under these lights and it was all way healthier than what grows in my backyard with 5-6 hours of direct sun light a day(too many big trees).
I second this, I grow lettuce and herbs under cheap t5 led shop lights and have gotten some monster heads of Paris island romaine, butter crunch, and several other varieties. The ones I use came in at around 8-9$ a piece when I bought them.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Those are the ones I used. I used the same light from germination to harvest at a fixed height and just let them grow into it. Was able to harvest off of all of them many times and ended up with about a foot high bare stalk with a bunch of lettuce on the end before it finally stopped producing.
I think it mostly just how philodendron burle Marx grow, they can put out multiple leaves at the same time and they can have multiple leaves on each nodes. Unlike most other philodendrons one leaf at a time for each nodes. For my set up I just grow it under Barrina T5 light in a semihydro pot. https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=sxts_rp_s_a_2_0?content-id=amzn1.sym.9cb06d61-cbae-4109-9d1e-14578fae3d41%3Aamzn1.sym.9cb06d61-cbae-4109-9d1e-14578fae3d41&crid=25KNVA7T7D7CR&cv_ct_cx=bar...
It's Amazon, but I bought 2 packs of [these](Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded Electric with Built-in ON/Off Switch https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_XZWW12SKDVS63RV1SGQ1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) for my garage. And there isn't a shadow to be seen.
Use these. I’ve installed them in my garage, storage room and laundry room. Stupid easy to install, and turn any space into a tanning bed. They’re relatively inexpensive and don’t use much electricity.

I literally can't say enough about these lights! I have 2 wire racks with 12 of these lights for my seedlings. They come in just under $50 if you have prime.
Get some T5 LED tubes. Your wire shelf is perfect for attaching them with zip toes. They dont heat uo and are SUPER bright. I have a 4×8 grow tent with two large wire shelves and one large wire shelf with a humidity cover.
This brand is super, they make 2ft tubes as well. The ones below are the ones I have, and my plants don't know winter ever came 😊.
Awesome! I’d recommend getting some shop lighting. I put these in my garage, and they are awesome!
I was looking at these that came recommended by the succulent subreddit mods:
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded Electric with Built-in ON/Off Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_FM4XKC0XN5MXAP3652NF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Nope not the original. Originally it was just 3 separate sockets with 1 light bulb in each. Here is a link to what I used - (Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded Electric with Built-in ON/Off Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_3T0TGYFEV2K11PADFH6C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I don’t have any sort of meter to find that. They are 6500k 2200 lumen shop lights. I am going to set up a mirror of this shelf for winter and am considering if some of my plants like the haworthia should only have 2 lights per shelf. The distance from the lights matters too.

If you wanted something even easier, buy a bulb to outlet converter and install these. They provide a lot of light, if not enough, keep adding more.
I’m torn between led shop likes like this (open to suggestions) or a 2ft by 4ft led light on either side of the garage openers. So it’d be 6 lights total, with each on positioned between the garage openers and the existing lights. Garage is 25x35x11, so a low ceiling, not sure how much that would change what lights I end up getting but I think ones that don’t have enough flood to them might cast too many shadows?
It works well enough, but I would like it a bit brighter. The ones I used are actually led rope lights from harbor freight. If you do get the strip lights definitely get them online. The prices at home depot and lowes are pretty high. Check these out too, I have been thinking of getting a set after some youtuber recommended them
I put six of these in my garage. It’s a fucking tanning booth now. (Not recessed)

Between 10" to 12" will work for you.
You can also use these as a cheaper alternative.
I am so sorry for the amazon link, i try so hard to avoid them, but these lights are difficult to find at this price any where else;
I would say 3-4 of these lights would decently cover 3-4 1020 trays.
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’ve got a couple of these hung above my squat rack in my garage. These work amazing, put a couple of these in your closet and it will be super bright in there.
Since you already have the outlet there for the fluorescent ones, this is what I'd use: https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B01HBT3BVM
I use these in my woodshop and they're pretty nice. Can link them together or use them separately.
That would be a minimum for me. My opinion, not carved in stone fact.
Over my 18"x48" greens growing setup.
I have been using these to great success this year, I also have metal shelving and put 3 on each shelf. I’ve used them mostly for starting seeds for the garden but also for some houseplants. The purple grow lights that I have as well sunburned my succulents but these shop lights have been great!
6 I believe. W/e Kansas is. I looked it up years ago in a farmers almanac and just remember the date. Lights aren't all that expensive anymore. I started with theses https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_GS15XJ1SRKVCXEB9G04J
GL
I bought these from Ammy two years ago. They work. Are they the best $$$ can buy? No. Do they fit the $60 range yes. I have a set of 5 shelves and put two lights on each shelf with zip ties. I grew peppers, eggplants, and tomato plants last year and had healthy plants that were not leggy. I added another set that were chainable, actually one light per shelf, that were a bit more maybe around $100 that had a different color spectrum. The lettuce that I grow year round liked having the additional lights and lettuce that was supposed to turn red actually turned red.
As always, I do not make any money from the Amazon link that I posted.
I have never used colored lights before, so that would be a good experiment to try.
For microgreens growing, I use two 2200 lumen LED lights per shelf. They are about 12” or so from the greens for 14 on and 10 off with the natural sunset going on with the shed windows. If it is spring or fall (or the high temperatures are 65-80°F, I like to put a shelf outside and grow with natural sun for certain greens.)
Right on. Yeah you shouldn’t need too much light to get your plants to grow fine in veg. You might just have to keep whatever light source you have super close to the plants. If you have a bit of spare cash to spend you could get something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_29CNDJ7TXQS4X60AG6F2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. I’ve used it to veg plants and they do just fine.
Sure!! I got these from the overwintering thread on this sub and I love them! I have 3 of the lights side by side on the underside of one of my shelves, and my cubic frost sits about 6” away from them, directly underneath them. I have the lights all chained together and connected to a timer that I also got off of Amazon. They’re set up to run 12 hours a day.
My Graptoveria Opalina really loves sun and ended up losing some color so I actually have been experimenting and am just now gaining some stressing back with moving her just 4” away from the lights, so you may have to experiment also!
I use these, 2-3 per shelf with the diffuser cut off I copied @fat_plants_only on Instagram pretty much to a T who has all the set up linked in her stories
These are strip lights that /u/bcdiamond recommended on his youtube channel: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HBT3BVM/
There are wires, they're just not super visible in pics.
The Chan bar's knurling is very grippy but less aggressive than the OPB. I think it's more aggressive than the regular Ohio bar, but I could be wrong. The knurling starts further towards the ends of the bar which leaves a bigger space so that it doesn't scrape up your shins. Great for deadlifts, but makes it less useful for narrow grip (narrow grip bench, sumo DL)
The lights help the plants grow since there's not enough sunlight for the plants in the winter by me. The succulents won't stretch anymore with them and the houseplants seem happy with them. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_IiFeGb26HWFMY
These are the lights I got. I went into all the plant groups searching for the right requirements for the lights. I cant remember what they are now, something with the lumens and the temperature. The lights are great for succulents, I actually didn't do any research for houseplants. I just stuck them under the lights and hoped for the best, but they seem to like it. I believe the succulents are about 6 inches away from the lights and there's about 13 and 17 inches from one shelf to another for the houseplants. Hope that helps! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_IiFeGb26HWFMY
Why not both? Shouldn’t cost much more to have a few outlets in the ceiling. Hang an extension cord reel from it. Comes in handy.
And buy these. I have them in my garage. They’re badass.

You must have at least one outlet down there. Daisy chain these together and your basement will be so bright you may have to wear sunglasses.

I went for a bunch of these, they are a little flimsy but get the job done

These LEDs off amazon. They work great but just don’t link more than like 8 together on one switch. We’ve found that regular lights in the right color temp are a lot cheaper if they’re not specifically labeled “grow lights.”
If you are in the US, look into the Barrina lights in Amazon:
They are excellent value for the money. Currently, I have both succulents and cacti under them and all are doing quite well.
If these don't work for you, just be sure to get likes at 6500k and have high enough output to provide your plants with enough light to grow.
Get yourself some Barrina shop lights on Amazon if you are in the US.
Great value for the money and they keep my succulents and cacti healthy through the winter months.
I use these and they work great! There are more options for less or more lights if it’s too expensive or you want more. Make sure to position it 12”-18” from the plant, it seems super close but LED’s won’t burn plants (Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5 Integrated Single Fixture, 4FT, 2200lm, 6500K (Super Bright White), 20W, Utility Shop Light, Ceiling and Under Cabinet Light, Corded electric with built-in ON/OFF switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_2x9XFbK5M4B94
After doing a lot of research on lights, lumens, lux, ppfd. I think im going to go with these these Barrina. Take off the cover over the LED and put two per shelf, 6" above the plants.
I do not use canned lights personally, so I can only speak to what I know. I purchased these: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HBT3BVM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and have been very happy with them, especially when you consider the price.
Hey, I saw this in the pinned comment, I was wondering if the brightness makes up for the lack of color spectrum? Or would you go with a more diverse color if not as bright
The other suggestions are great! I would place all outlets above workbench height so that installing one won't block outlets. A sub panel would be a must IMHO. You can install outlets in the ceiling to make it easier for installing garage door openers and such, and I would install at least two switched outlets that you can plug future shoplights into, or even install something like the Barina lights from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B01HBT3BVM
I would wire with all 12ga wire so that you can install 20A outlets if you want.
Oh, the Barina lights are light enough you could install a couple on your garage door with a flexible cord that allows the door to open and close without interference, that will give you good light with the door open. A friend of mine did that and it was a great idea. The Barina lights are very low profile.
I will have some photos in a couple of months. Although I am using lights due to the large volume of plants I am growing they would work just as well if a person had a window with good light. This year I am growing forced bulbs. Hyacinths, Sacred Lily, Paperwhites and a few more I can't recall just now. Forced bulbs can be very rewarding because they are super easy to grow, come up quickly and can be amazingly fragrant. In other winters I have grown huge spider plants and herbs, also under lights but a window would do the trick. For what it is worth, don't forget that you can start some plants indoors and move them outside in the Spring.
Here are the lights that I am using:
Good luck!
Does anyone have any recommendations for a light for a smaller space, that isn't too crazy expensive? I would love to be able to use something like this, but I currently have a small collection and, a shelf that's only about 23 inches wide and I certainly don't need 6 bulbs. Either that or something like a desk lamp that doesn't require a shelf to hang onto could also be an option.
I ordered LED light strips off of Amazon that I powered by screwing an outlet converter into an existing over head light bulb socket.
My garage is so bright now I almost need sunglasses.

thanks!
This is my first time using grow lights too! I got this one on Amazon. For the first 2 weeks I kept them on for 10 hours, currently at 12 hours, and my goal is 14 or 16 hours!
Oh damn! I was thinking of using these lights from amazon, they seem to be a step up in terms of quality.
Try searching amazon for Barrina LED. This may work
50L or I think 54qt for you Americanos. If you're in America, get these from Amazon. Oh, how I wish I could have ordered those to my country. I went through Alibaba and had 2 months of waiting for them to be shipped due to corona. Would not reccommend.
I bought these Barrina LED Lights and they're great. Super easy to mount and very bright.
Looks like there is a lighting deal for them right now for about another 50 minutes. I got them for $47 last July. So I would say the lighting deal is pretty good. So if you see this before then I'd get them. Plus amazon has great returns so if they're not up to your needs, just return them.
Hope that helps!
I am getting so down on my collection. I bought these Barrina lights and thought I would be good. Got a 4 foot stand from Home Depot, a bunch of new echeveria, and was super excited for my new setup. And despite it, they’re still stretching. They stop once they get about an inch 1/2 away from the light. I’m so disappointed, but am afraid I can’t afford a light that won’t have them seeking the light. My stretched out echeverias just make me sad to look at now. :( Any suggestions?
There aren’t many smaller packs. Here is a different brand in a 6pack, but you’re getting a more cost efficient solution...as in, you may find other options in single or 2packs, but you’ll likely pay more for them.
Yeah theres lots of bulbs that can work. They dont have to say "growlight" even they just need the right specs. 6500k light spectrum, at least 2000lumens (but if one bulb doesnt get there you can use two and it will add up), and i like at least 60W but they can be lower if they're led lights. I know theres like 100w equvilent lights which i think are pretty good. They work in any lamp you just need to make sure it can handle the wattage of the bulb. You'll maybe be able to have like 2/3 plants under a bulb and it will need to be really close, like within 6inches from the top of the plant. You'll need multiple if you want to expand beyond that.
Theres also these types:
That will also work and i believe they have a 2ft one somewhere.
To answer your question though, a new thing I’m doing to help my pod is I’ve renovated our recording studio, added some amazing (and affordable) LED lights. Creating a space that’s more visual, and clipping together small clips of every episode. YouTube seems to be the best place for new people to find us, so leaning on that aspect. These lights are amazing, and affordable. Very happy with them. (Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Well then without seeing it, I would definitely suggest some fresh paint and lighting. I added these to my garage and it was an instant game changer in the atmosphere of the gym, especially during the dark winter months.
(Pack of 6) Barrina LED T5... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Here you go boss. I think this also confirms they are the same set OP has haha. They are very cost effective. I run four per shelf in my garden but I will note that I've run into the occasional plant that I need more light for. Three season lettuce comes to mind (they didn't develop any color until I moved them outside) though that may be a light temperature thing... I still need to test that.
https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B01HBT3BVM
I put $50 worth of LED stick lights in the basement workshop. Oh my god it is so nice to be able to see what I'm doing. When I move, I will unscrew about 8 small screws from the drywall, fill the holes and be on my way!
Really? I use 4 foot white LEDs for my plants and they are barely warm to the touch (especially compared to fluorescent lights). This is similar to what I use https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1544560492&sr=8-4 Purple lights are also pretty harsh on the eyes.
I think that’s what I’m gonna do. If you can see in the video I have attic access right there in the garage so it’s easy to get to the wiring. I think I’ll take out all the bulbs, then take down the ballasts, then try and take out all of the wiring. Then take your suggestion about just putting flat wall cover plates on there.
Going to be putting these in with a switch: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_OBq0BbK1JEA1B
Currently using 3 of these guys in a DIY bench. They're 6500k and have been working out really well for my plants. My ficus seedlings seemed to be getting too much light so I've also made a shade cloth with cheap netting fabric.
Downside is they're 48" long. But the pack brings 6 for $40. Each bulb is only 20W. Running 3 for 12hrs/day will only cost me ~$3. Highly recommended.
I'll be honest, I don't believe that's entirely true.
I've used these bright white lights all winter (7 months at this point) and have had germination and flowering with multiple plants, no stretching and some sun stress colors on my succulents.
Looking at getting some lights for my garage (single overhead light and an Ikea light =/= good times) and was thinking about these. If anyone has any comments about these lights in particular or other budget friendly solutions, that would be great!
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HBT3BVM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
These are $50, super bright. Like so bright. All you need for a 1 space or even a 2 space garage. For the price get 2 and have all the nice low power usage bright ass led lighting you ever need.
I second this - this would fix like all of my problems.... potentially

I use these and they work great.
I just have them zip tied to metal shelving. They're cheap, lightweight, don't get hot and are LED so less electricity useage.
I have 2 sets that I use for my entire set up, 2 per shelf.
I plan on using them to start my seeds indoors here shortly but they've worked great for my succulents, some even bloomed. People say you have to have the colored lights but you definitely don't.
I just have mine on a timer so I literally don't have to worry about a thing. I'll definitely have to pay more attention once I get my veg seedlings started, at least for water.
Thank you! These are the lights: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HBT3BVM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I attach 40 inch 6500k LEDs to the bottom of the metal shelves with zip ties daisy chained together. I got a pack of 6 lights for $45 off amazon. I use 2 per shelf, at different heights each shelf
Thanks.
I used these LED tubes. I've bought dozens of them over the last few years. They're the perfect K rating for painting models and they don't draw much juice.

amazon has a 6 pack of 48 inch led shop lights for 40 bucks. best investment ever

891 reviews 4.5 stars I got a perfect set. put 4 in the shop. one over my kitchen sink and one in the laundry room.

yes the connecting wires are a little short . but it comes with 6 power cords and switches..
Sure! I used these lights from amazon. I think they are supposed to be for garages but they met the specs I was looking for (CCT: 6500k and 2100+ lumens per square foot per light) and were relatively inexpensive. I have 2 on each shelf connected to eachother by cords that are included in the pack. The pack also comes metal snaps that screw in, but I opted to attach using large command picture hanging strips. I kept the metal brackets just in case the command strips didnt work but so far they have been working great and I dont have to put as many holes in the hutch. Plus I have run the lights for 8 hours straight and can still touch the aluminum housing. I would say after that amount of time its like touching one of those hand warmer packs right when they start. Its kind of hard to see from the pictures but I did have to drill small 5/8th inch holes so the lights could connect as a continuous unit. This was honestly just for me because I am forgetful and have them hooked up to this timer. I also have some mini fans that I would like to put in so I can keep the doors shut... but I havent quite figured that out yet haha
Thank you! I’m using Barrina led lights that I found on Amazon and I zip tied them to a plant rack that I found at IKEA (links for both below). My plant babes are loving it too!
I usually do around 10-14 hours a day but I don’t keep a strict schedule. I turn the lights on before I start working around 8am and turn them off between 9-10pm give or take depending on the day. The rack is also in a corner of the room next to a west and south facing window so I’m able to put other plants on the top shelf of the rack that don’t need to be under the led lights which is nice.
Sorry, I’m not very good with Reddit :( I would include a picture of my whole setup if I knew how.
They also come in 4ft lengths which is what I have: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HBT3BVM

These have been my go to...
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_HSWJ8RAMGQDPKW9BMAT1
Thank you. They do look promising and I'm sure they will appreciate the extra light once they leaf out.
Not a suggestion for improvement, just an fyi on the set up I'm using for mine. I've got them set up in a spare closet, so all their light comes from grow lights. I'm using this 6pack of led lights. They fit almost perfectly in the closet and the output is high enough that using a phone app light meter I'm getting them into the low range of outdoor light. Since the light is much lower than what they would get outdoors, I'm using a digital timer, this one, set on an 18 hour cycle.
Yeah! Super easy to install, I got 2 of these
I love them too! They work well! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_IiFeGb26HWFMY
I got these and they seem to work well for me. My succulents are actually getting stress colors. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_IiFeGb26HWFMY
I started out with a couple sets of these with 2 lights per shelf
and decided to try out these. Ended up just adding one of these to each shelf. I think it's making a difference. With the other ones, red lettuce would not actually turn red.
the two were compatible enough that I could daisy chain them together.
Nothing too fancy. Just 6500k and LED with enough power will do. I use these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_aMQ3Fb2K4WMFK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
These are Awesome! I have all 6 in a single bay garage and it’s crazy bright!
Wandering Jew isn't a 'succulent' but it's pretty close and is going to be more similar than say, a seedling or trying to produce tomatoes in the winter.
This is the article that helped me, so many place talk about proper grow lights instead of typical shop lights that work just fine. This is also helpful
I got these from amazon earlier this month and I've had them on for a couple weeks now and all my new growth is going great. I got them for $56 for 6 bulbs. I have them set up on your typical wire shelving, 2 per shelf. They were extremely easy to install and set up. They're also pretty cool, even directly touching the bulb it's just warm, barely hot after being on for 12 hours.
Now, obviously they're not available anymore. Amazon does have some similar packages that are 5000k which should work but isn't as ideal.
Special grow lights are nice (the red/blue bulbs, give out purple light) but if you're not looking to force something to flower and just keep it with decent growth in the winter, a shop light works fine.
You want something with 6500k for the color temp - it's a bright white. 5000k would probably be okay but not ideal. 3000k is for flowering.
Basically, if you have a smallish area and a shelf, a t5 or t8 light fixture with bulbs in the 6500k BRIGHT WHITE or HIGH OUTPUT range will keep her plants happy.
If you throw t5 6500k into amazon, there are tons of bulbs available but I'm not familiar with the fixture - what I got included those.
Now, if she only has a couple of plants, something smaller would be fine, I know they have 2ft long ones too.
They have them on amazon for cheap.
Wow. Thanks for all of the advice! Ok let me respond to it....
> swap the doors around so that the doors open away from each other
I had considered that, but didn't think it was possible. Looks like it's a pain, but it can be done! Great idea.

> wiring shelving
Any ideas on how to hide the chemicals? I like the idea of shelving, but the wiring shelving looks tacky to me

> floor paint
Will this hold up to wear and tear, water, etc? I'd hate to have to strip it every few years.

> grab kitchen countertop pieces and attach them using heavy duty shelving metal pieces to make a desk in a L shape
Are you thinking this should go in the main storage area?
> I would build a wall for the storage room
Do you mean build a wall all the way across the storage room to break the basement into two medium sized rooms? One for laundry+little entertainment area, then wall, then one for storage?

> I bought a pack of lighting from Amazon for my garage ,
I like this idea a lot. Especially in the storage area which is currently illuminated with single light bulbs.

> tubs that match and are clearly labeled is such a great thing
I wondered if it would come down to this. I will invest in those because I think you're very right.

>trim the top of it out with a very nice piece of wood and turn it into a shelf that has pictures and memorabilia on it
Oh I love this idea. We don't have many places in the house to "showcase" our memorabilia on. Good idea.
> if you don't want to see the washer and dryer
I don't think I said this right...I would love to see my washer and dryer, especially because of the window above it, but I just want it to have more...structure around it maybe, instead of it looking like we just threw a couple of appliances down there and called it a day. I want it to be a nice place.
> Is the corner area the open area?
Ah, well there's that little tiny room in the back left that's the "workshop area" and then there's that awkward open area right in front of it by the safe. Does that make sense? Are you thinking I should use the "workshop area" as a TV room or the open area?

> If your crawl floods or has water issues, then install another sump pit and pump in there and get rid of those issues.
It's more of a landscaping issue that we're fixing this weekend with a better drainage system. The previous owners poured some concrete sidewalks inappropriately and essentially created lakes against the house without drainage. It shouldn't be an issue soon, but thank you for the suggestion!

Thank you for the long reply to everything! I really appreciate the time you took to read my post and go through the pictures. :)

I know this is a 6 pack, but something like this then? https://www.amazon.com/Barrina-Integrated-Fixture-Utility-Electric/dp/B01HBT3BVM/
Very cool, what country? And my experience with these affordable light's has been great. I have them on a shelf. In case you don't already know the grow light's specifically for growing or that are "full spectrum" can be pricey and are needed for fruiting plants. Such as tomatoes and peppers. I have started tomatoes and peppers under these lights, but when the flower forms I have transplanted them outside as I've always read that these kind of light's wont allow the fruit to develop properly. But it's 45.99 US dollars for 24 ft. of energy efficient LED light in total. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HBT3BVM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I got [these on Amazon](www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_W9NFQ59G3WBZA4PTFW26) and I can’t recommend them enough. I used a screw in plug/socket on the 2 existing lights in my garage and the difference is amazing.

for my greens. I was hoping to use the tape strip LEDs for a 30 gallon, plastic barrel Space Bucket type setup for Zuchinni plants. We have deer, rabbits, crows, turkeys, and rabbits to contend with, outside.
Just some cheap ones from amazon. Super easy to install.
For seed starting, basically any good quality LED lights will work as long as they are 6500K or higher. And obviously the more lumens they put out the better.
I have pretty much the same setup as OP with these lights: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ and have had great success with them. I put in 2 lights per shelf but I also put mylar around 3 sides of the shelf to more efficiently use the light.
Now if you plan to have your plants under lights for their entire life cycle, that is when you need to look into more traditional "grow lights".
I got better lights, t5s, 6500k. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_VRTV7Z9VPC65S69QJ0DD

The room has definitely had a major temp change between the cold outside and the heat finally turning on in our apartment. I can’t move the shelf (it’s connected to a larger construct), but I could move all of it like 3 ft to the right. Do you happen to have a link to what lights will work? That’s my main problem. Every time I read one of the mega threads it’s like reading another language. The best link I’ve come across is this, but I definitely don’t need 6 of them, and I’m having a hard time finding just one that is all of those requirements?
Also how far away does a lamp need to be? If I scoot them away from the window Onto an identical shelf, they’ll only be about 4-6 inches away from where I can anchor the light over top.
I’m thinking the metal ones like this but I’ve only seen links for the bulbs, not the shade things that actually fit and hold them.
I feel really dumb trying to figure this out :(

I ordered these lights from Amazon. Barrina
Work like a charm! They light the garage up like a surgical suite!
here’s my setup! $60 CAD for 6 lights 6400k 1800lm (I think), at 48”, they feel flimsy but once installed they work great and for the price it’s hard to beat. I grab a picture hanging kit for $3 Home Depot and some extra wood from my shop to make the adjustable height stand, you could also grab some light ratchet straps, I’ve found them as cheap as $3-4 USD . Leaves a lot of space if you need to but some extra lights.
here are the lights I use on amazon! you could even buy a second set and mount them vertically for more light all around (not sure if this works, I don’t grow indoors more than just seedlings).
If you have multiple shelves, these are probably your best bet:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HBT3BVM/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_GXO7DbAS2DXH7
If you're only looking to cover these plants and could use the grow light to just supplement natural light (rather than grow light getting the only light source) these would probably work:

These guys. You can get a 12 pack for cheaper also. I think it works out to 7.50 per light. I run them for 16 hours a day. I use three per shelf for green and herbs. Two per shelf for microgreens. They need to be fairly close for the first couple of weeks, but things take off well. They are completely cool to the touch.

This calendar has worked well for me. We use a couple hundred square feet in our backyard for growing veggies, and tend to start most of them indoors like people in this thread have mentioned.
A cheap set of LEDs (you can buy fancy full-spectrum plant LEDs if you really want, but these are just for getting them growing prior to putting them outside) and a heat mat from Amazon or a local nursery will go a long way in making sure you're ready to go with plants year round.
If you get some plants going indoors, you can replace your tomatoes and peppers with some cold-weather crops (Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, etc.).
grow lights also meant to type 6500K not W.
Nowadays, there are LED alternatives that are cheaper, use less electricity, last longer, are lighter, etc. Because they don't get as hot though, you'd want to make sure your basement isn't too cold, or at least have a heating pad to germinated the seeds.
I used these lights from October to May this past winter for my succulents and started my veggies for spring and they worked perfectly. They get very slightly warm but not hot at all, I had them on a timer for I think 14 hour days?
My succulents still flowered, kept their color, didn't stretch out.
My seeds germinated great, had tight and strong growth.
This was my set up before I did my seeds
.. I ended up mushing all my succulents together and adding another row on top for my seeds and apparently I didn't take any pics. BUT! It worked great!
You'll notice it's 6500k for the 'color', super bright white, and 2200 lumens.
I'd highly recommend these specific lights. You can connect them or have each separate, they're super light weight and don't get hot. I know some folks used them as under cabinet lights, or garage lights. It's an entire fixture + light so you don't have to get a separate lamp or anything.
I liked them so much I got 2 sets!
You'll also notice they aren't by a window at all. My plants got 100% of their light from the LEDs and turned out great.
I'm not a professional but the lumens and the color temperature aren't right - at least from what I can tell.

I would like to know too from people's experience. Also it depends on what you are going to grow. From what I read, leafy greens don't needs as powerful grow lights as something that bears fruits. A lot of blurple LEDs from Amazon.com seems to be too cheap and not worth it.
I'm going to experiment with three different types of lighting. 320W XL QB324 LED KIT. Fairly expensive but very powerful, gonna grow some peppers with this in a 2' x 4' setup.
Infinity from Thrive Agritech. 58 W 4 foot LED bar. Going to use a single one for a 2' x 4' lettuce.
Cheap Six 4ft 20W Barrina LED T5 bars. I'm going to use 3 of these together for lettuce in a 2' x 4' setup on two levels.
I would like to see what people have used and work. I'm expecting to the HLG quantum board and the thrive agritech bar to work, but if the budget friendly Barrina bar works, even better.
FWIW, I've used these for both succulents and seedlings and they've worked great and they're super cheap and easy.
Agreed. This looks like the plugs for some 4ft long LED overhead lights I recently bought.

I mean, I use a 6500k with only 20W and mine are great and have been since October.
No stretching, sun colors, even some blooms.
