Hi, as others have said it sounds like runners knee. I get this on and off (from yoga or the elliptical). They make braces specifically for it. I wear them while I work out when my knees hurt and the pain goes away after a week or so.
A while ago I experienced patellar tendinitis, which causes knee pain and is associated with jumping sports. The two things that helped - aside from resting my knees - were wearing a knee strap like this and doing exercises to strengthen my quads.
