I've been using these shower filters and replacement filters for years. They're less than $100. They work like a Brita filter, but in your shower. Ignore the "smell-fresh" thing-a-ma-jig. It's worthless. I'd swear that the filters last a lot longer than they say as well, unless you have extremely long shower takers in the house.
We have terrible hard (city supplied) water and sometimes it smells like chlorine. I noticed an improvement in the quality of my hair after the first wash under the new showerhead, and my skin felt like the soap rinsed off cleaner. The unfiltered water felt like, "ok - there's no dirt on me, but my skin feels tight" kind of clean. After installing the filtering showerhead, it felt like "wow! I am fresh and squeaky" clean like when I lived someplace with awesome city water.
The company used to be called Pelican and we could buy directly from the site, but it appears that they have changed their name to Pentair. You can still find Pelican brands ones on Amazon though, so it must have been a recent change. I bought a number of filters last time I purchased when there were supply chain issues, so I just learned about the name change while looking for links for you.
Do yourself a solid and get one with the wand and hose so you can easily rinse the harder to reach areas of your body.
When you want to spend anywhere from $300-$500 for your drinking water, look into under-sink-mount reverse osmosis systems. You'll save a ton of money on bottled water and plastic waste.
