I have used the drops before but it gets difficult to read especially when your nutrients add to the color.

I got this one for under $20 and it works great.
CO2 drop checkers are usually delayed by 1-2hrs. This is one reason why planted tank experts like Tom Barr always advocate against them. It's much easier to get a ph reading from an electronic ph test meter. In fact they're not as expensive as you might think, Amazon has some good ones for under $20.

In addition, you should refer to a ph kh chart to get a good idea of how many ppm your water really has. >40ppm tends to begin affecting fish
