About $300 blurple light :/20x36x56 tent, small random humidifier and dehumidifier , 10” circulation fan, 6” online fan with carbon filter, fox farms ocean soil and fox farms liquid ferts, 7 gallon pot.
As you can see she's pretty droopy. This is my third grow with my last being unsuccessful but my first was great and easy though a bit larfy. Anyways two days ago I go to water her and noticed the tips of her leaves were curling downwards pretty obviously, googled possible reasons and most results said overwatering and possible root rot. Previously injad been watering her everyday and she seemed to be responding really well to it. Really looking good and growing faster than I expected. So I stopped watering for two days, the soil is still moist today BTW, and when I checked her she looked considerably worse. I researched how to treat root rot and most results said to start over, I really don't want to do that. As far as the details of the plant it's all rather simple, fox farms soil, Cali farms nutes (right now I'm just using a grow formula nothing fancy), this is the light I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YWYH439/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (I know it's a shotty light), it's a photo period that's either cherry pheno or Maui waui. I'm not sure on any other details. Any advice would be appreciated, is it possible it's not root rot? Should I continue to not water and see if it bounces back, am I over reacting? Any help is greatly appreciated.
No problem friend.
I use a Viparspectra 600WE Dimmable LED if it’s of any consolation. For the amount of plants your trying to grow, I’d recommend something similar.
Happy growing, we’d love this see updates.
Gosh I have no idea how to find out all that. I'd need a meter wouldn't I? I guess haha. If they burn I move it up away. I've got the light in this link. It's dimmable and I keep it like mid way turned up. It's about a foot or so from my plants but I also have lower light succulents like haworthia off to the side and they seem happier too. Color coming to them more vibrant. This grow light is a1 as fuck and I will recommend to everyone. It's good quality, so more than 20 bucks but so worth it. I wish the 600 w was bigger, but I don't have a major legit setup, so it works for me for now :) and seems to range from lower light to full sun--in comparison to my state haha. Ohio is shady until summer so gotta make the Lil shits happy
LED Grow Light, VIPARSPECTRA... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YWYH439?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
I’m actually not quite sure, but there’s some information here in the item description on Amazon; https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-Newest-Dimmable-Spectrum-Hydroponic/dp/B07YWYH439 My collection has grown quite a lot since this post and the colors have grown further in these two cultivars, so I now use a 1200W from the same product line. The 600W I now have in a set up for growing propagations and seed/seedlings :-)
It’s 60 bucks, which is very good for a light of this quality tbh. People successfully grow cannabis with it too lol. It’s a hanging light that can cover a few square feet, depends on the windowsill!
My friend u/The-Daley-Lama and I both grow our flytraps using this light (I use it at 75% power and at a height of 16 in), and have seen amazing success with both color and vigor in our plants. We also connect it to a smart plug to sync it with the local sunrise/sunset, so that even though you are using artificial light, there are still the photoperiod cues for the plant to go into dormancy. In terms of temperature, 32-50 degrees F is the approximate range for winter dormancy. If it’s outside that range, I would recommend looking at techniques such as fridge dormancy.

Others have had similar results using this light (cue u/The-Daley-Lama who recommended it and has great pictures). I use it at 75% brightness and hanging at about 16-18 inches above my plants.

I use this one and my plants LOVE it, and grow vigorously and produce nice colors. I know others who use this light and have the results to prove it (Cue u/The-Daley-Lama). I hang it about 16-18 inches above my plants and use it at 75% brightness and it works like magic. It is on sale for 50 dollars. Best of luck!

It is also on sale for 50 dollars right now! I keep it at 75% brightness at about a foot and a half above my plants. I was put on this wave by u/The-Daley-Lama :-)

It seems like you don't have any good options for natural light that wouldn't require supplemental artificial light, so you might as well go for full artificial lighting, which is easy for Nepenthes, but quite a bit harder for VFTs. What is barely enough for the VFT would likely be too much for the Nepenthes. I'd say your best bet would be to find an LED fixture to grow both of them under.
Something like this suspended 12-18" above the plants would be perfect.
I didn’t know the genetics because it was a bag seed. I’d say my defoliating was not as good as it could of been. I did it but didn’t get rid of the bottoms 1/3rd of the plant but trimmed fan leaves like crazy.
What kind of lights are you running? I ask bc, if you look at my post history, I started some peppers in the spring under my lights, and the seedlings were just terrible. I put them outside when it was warm enough, and sure enough, my problems seemed to be the strength of light.
Yours look healthy, so I’m curious if just moving my lights closer, like how you have yours, if that means I can grow peppers through the winter.
Hows this one

Thanks for the feedback. Are the budget Amazon ones trash, or passable?(https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-Newest-Dimmable-Spectrum-Hydroponic/dp/B07YWYH439/ref=sr_1_17?dchild=1&keywords=600w+grow+lights&qid=1595900393&sr=8-17) I have read the FAQ but it seems pretty outdated and I would love updated feedback on how they are. thanks again
Get fabric pots and an LED light from Amazon, then germinate bag seeds under it. Legal "medical" buds are still covered in all sorts of sketchy pesticides. Making your own once it's legalized will be WAY cheaper and ultimately healthier. The lights i linked aren't the best on the market, but they're amazing for beginners because they're cheap and easy to use.
This is the one I was thinking of https://www.amazon.com/VIPARSPECTRA-Newest-Dimmable-Spectrum-Hydroponic/dp/B07YWYH439/
It's Viparspectra! I believe it was this one
Hi there, I use a Viparspectra 600WE Dimmable LED grow light, which is going for $59.99 rn on Amazon.
I mostly grow Dionaea, but this light is strong enough for Drosera, and Sarracenia too, and stronger than what you’ll need for most nepenthes.
I’ve photo documented some of my plants along the way:
Typical this growth takes place over the course of 4 months. As you can see, the plant starts out as the average light deprived weak plant you’d expect from little shop of horrors. 4 months later, it is a vigorous beautiful forest of 9 divisions.
B-52: this growth takes place over the course of 3.6 months. At first it is a healthy but small plant, grows into a huge, colorful and proper B-52.
G-14 Rosetted: this growth takes place over the course of 4 months. It starts out as a healthy but small and thin plant, and grows into a gorgeous, vivid and full rosette. “

I grow VFTs indoors and it works incredibly for these purposes, I imagine nepenthes would be a lateral transition.
This grow light easily covers 4 feet at 70% power.
I haven’t used any other lights of this caliber so I can’t say that it’s the best, but it is at least efficacious.
Some pics below for proof of concept:

Hey friend, your plant is suffering from light deprivation so you have accurately diagnosed the problem, not always easy to do so good job.
Growing them outside in full sun is a great/cheapest option if it’s available to you.
That being said, growing indoors is completely viable, and grow lights can be used that lead to, respectfully, healthier, vibrant, and more vigorous plants compared to some which are grown outside.
I won’t ever say that growing indoors > than growing outside under sun, but it is at least just as good with proper equipment.
I don’t expect you to take any of this on faith, if you’re interested in growing indoors for any reason (there are many), I can offer you a window into what that can look like.
Below I’ve listed a slideshow of VFT cultivars, none of which has seen the light of day since the first picture.

U/ChicagoToEdison has a very similar setup and has excellent results as well that he’s posted recently.
I encourage you to pick whichever option works best for you, no wrong choices here. There is less information available about growing indoors however, so if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us, we’d love to help!
Hi there!
I grow VFTs exclusively indoors. None of my plants has seen a sun ray.
I can’t give you technical information, but I’ll show you some of the results I’ve achieved with my setup and you can judge for yourself.

The user u/ChicagoToEdison uses the light to and they have had similar success with their plants too :)
Hope that helps, and good luck!
Is it this one?
Well, that's disappointing. I was encouraged to see those Amazon lights being used by reviewers to grow cannabis. Combined, they were supposed to draw 120 watts, which was supposed to cover ~4 sqft according to the conversion chart on https://www.ledgrowlightsdepot.com/blogs/blog/16326275-how-many-led-watts-are-required-per-square-foot-of-grow-space, which seemed like it would be enough for at least 3 containers, but I see now that their recommendations don't apply to plants with high light needs. What would you recommend? Would this be sufficient? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YWYH439/ref=dp_cerb_1
