Preach. I was marine as well, and been here since 2012. You always here that the protestor are paid and shit like that in attempts to discredit them, but it really is a grassroots movement of Okinawans. The economy relies on the military is BS, last I heard the bases are about 5% of the economy, but redeveloping the base land would provide much more income. China is definitely a threat to the region, but they're not going to outright invade Okinawa or any Japanese islands. They're smart enough to know that there would be serious global consequences.

I live in the Nanjo area, when I first moved here in 2019 there were no aircraft noise, but now it seems almost daily I'm heart planes and helicopters flying overheard. Before I lived by the convention center in Ginowan and had helicopters flying over nightly.

One of my biggest concerns is the lack of accountability over the military environmentally. Who know how contaminated the land on the bases are, and even off bases. Just in 2014 they found 108 barrels of what they believe was agent orange under a school soccer field and now is the issue of PFAS here from the firefighting foams used on kadena and futenma, yet the military denies everything and refuses to accept responsibility
