No, you do not need to pre-open it, as the system is completely useable out of the box, and the updates so far have been fairly small.
A screen protector is a matter of personal preference. I don't have one on my system.
Get a cover like this one: [link]
they dont make console only ones. The system is meant to be carried with the joycons at all times.
there is this "hybrid cover" that works similar to a tablet cover, but it doesn't protect the rails if the joycons arent attached.
There's a hybrid case you can pick up that protects the tablet itself. There's also joycon silicon covers if you want. I don't really think those are necessary. A good zippered case as all you really need.
Has any one seen it in person or anyrthing like this fitting in the dock? I don't think it will but I am not certain.
I remember seeing that the dock only had enough extra room for a glass or regular screen protector.
hybrid cover case
Has there been any kind of review on the PowerA Nintendo Switch Hybrid Cover?
~~I can't imagine you can keep it on while docked, right? Or is there enough room?~~
Edit: I really don't care if it can be docked or not, but I would like to see some kind of review if someone has seen one please
Do you think something like this would fit in the case?
If you are keeping them separate like that, Ideally a cover for the switch to keep the screen safe, like this [link]
Unfortunately you cant dock with this on, but thats the price you pay for wanting to be lightweight, or you can get a usb C extension cable for your dock.
Joycons are pretty durable, but i guess you could get some covers for those too (i dont'), like these that add some ergonomics to them [link]
I use a PowerA Hybrid Cover as a stand and it fits in the case that's similar to your Orzly.
My portable setup is complete. I picked up a knockoff portable dock, retractable HDMI cable, and packed in my Nexus 5x USB-C phone charger.
a hybrid cover might work for that.
There is also the Switchcharge, which while not yet released would offer the best portable experience.
If you cant wait for it to release, there are a couple of knock offs already up on Amazon with smaller batteries
There's this [link]
Its similar to what you posted.
Do yourself the favor
I want to HIGHLY recommend the Hybrid case (Normal or Splatoon 2 version).
Its SO fantastic and pretty cheap. Only con is that you have to take the Switch out of the case to put it in the dock. BUT that sounds harder than it is, I swear it takes maybe 2 real seconds.
Its fantastic case that protects the Switch and allows you to set it up in 3 different angles. PLUS, it looks really good.

any opinions on this product?
not any that will hold the switch off the surface for charging.
but there is this hybrid cover
If you're nervous about scratches (as I am), I would definitely recommend this console cover. It's doubles as a kickstand of sorts, but much sturdier than the one built into the console. You don't be able to dock it while the cover is in use, but if you purchase a USB C extender, you can just plug the console into the dock-- that way you never have to worry about scratches if you have a warped dock.
I have both of these products (just got the extender today) and they work beautifully. I hope this helps!
maybe wait for this one?
There is one case that I can think of that doubles as a stand. but it doesnt offer any additional protection for the joycons, or allow you to charge easier.
Otherwise I would suggest looking into a tablet stand plus a regular carrying case.
It stays up fine. mine made it through a long car ride on the dash board.
Though if you still dont trust it, there is this slick cover/ kickstand, and eventually the switchcharge.
Yeah looks like it has something like the Hybrid cover: [link]
It's probably the officially licensed one
But pretty much the same thing
Not OP but maybe he was talking about this one?
Any experiences with hybrid covers like this one?:[link]
I would like to get one, but is it comfortable to use in handheld mode with the flap in the back?
Sure, the exhaust is on the top, but the intakes are on the lower back. See that there are holes in the back of the dock, and that all official cases and stands have holes in the back.

I got this and love it!
This is probably what I'd pick up if I were concerned about the alleged kickstand issues. [link]
I'm not one to buy protective glass type product but i use a targis cover for my iPad that's like this hybrid cover. Is this recommended for someone who's going to mainly use the switch as a handheld and has this case? The case's straps seem kinda firm and tight so I worry about scratches without a cover like this.
Are there any reviews on the PowerA Hybrid Cover?
I think this might be what you're looking for? [link]
Honestly I'd go with this. It's a screen cover that can be used as a stand
I didn't think about charging. I was considering getting this one but now I'm realizing you can't charge while using it.
