Yes that would make sense. I wondered if fossilization could act faster on other planets but I don't have a great understanding of how fossilization works aside from the basics. The idea that the eggs are protected from fossilization makes sense.

I was made aware just an hour ago that this official book may have explanations about many things in Prometheus, if you havn't heard about it yet reddit post about it
