I recommend this book, mate. If you really care about yourself and your own health, you would give up meat right away.
As for the outcome of a vegan society? Only time will tell. Veganism is rapidly rising while the meat and dairy industries are in decline. Change is coming and it is inevitable.
Show me a market where meat is cheaper than rice, vegetables, beans, and legumes. It's not.
>this massive protein counterjerk in vegan spheres
Yeah, I think it's a kneejerk reaction to all of the annoying comments about veganism and protein. Unfortunately, people take it too far in the other direction and there are some well-known doctors/authors who have done their own disservice to the community with their claims about the dangers of protein (Proteinaholic is the one that comes to mind most often).
Dr. Garth Davis has a lot of info on protein for various kinds of athletes in his book Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession with Meat Is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It .
He says that the science on this subject is inconclusive, but he gives some useful information all the same.
The general recommendation is mininum 0.8g per lean weight. My lean weight is aprox 41 kg sk I am good. Most women need only 46 g (that is US recommendation for average woman). Protein deficiency in developed world does not really exist, unless you eat too little kcal or have some diseases that can change the way your body deals with protein. On the contrary, most people, especially meat eaters, tend to overeat protein which leads to obesity. Of course, I am not a doctor, so don't consider this a medical advice. But there is a book about this topic written by a surgon: Proteinaholic. Long story short: I don't worry about protein. Neither are gorillas or an oxes who are not eating protein rich foods at all. And yet, look at their muscles.
When will this society’s obsession with protein stop already smh. Please read Proteinaholic by Garth Davis, there are many other awesome books on vegan nutrition also.
Protein intake requirements are overblown. No one, not even athletes, need the level of protein some of us get to do actual protein functions. It's just calories after a certain point. It's like 0.3 gram per lb for adults, 0.8 for serious athletes, and 1 gram per lb for body building. These are not minimums, they are maxes. You get no benefit from more than that.
Protein as a weight loss calorie source isn't that great but it's better than fat. It's better to cut total calories and increase whole food fiber to feel full rather than using protein excess to feel full.
Read Proteinaholic: How Our Obsession with Meat Is Killing Us and What We Can Do About It
The book Proteinahoiic by Dr. Garth Davis has a section about protein needs of various athletes. He says endurance athletes actually need more protein than strength athletes, because their bodies are tearing muscle down during endurance sports.
>For instance even vegan Pat Baboumian consumes an excessive 400grams per day.
Yeah, 1,600 calories a day from protein. It sounds like he's gonna die early but that's typical for Gym rats. And it's completely f-in stupid. Human muscle is 76% water and 4% other, and only around 20% protein. That means 400 grams is enough to build 2kg a day.
But let's say due to daily protein losses, turnover, and basic inefficiencies, that only 1 in every 4 grams of protein gets used in muscle. That's still 0.5 kg of muscle a day. 365 lbs in a year. The most a person gains in a year is during the so-called beginner gains period, typically months 6-18 for serious beginners, and that's 20lbs natural. Past basic daily needs (RDA), at his weight calculated at 93 grams, the excess (307) is about 15x too much protein for simply building new muscle with a very generous quadruple growth margin. He could very easily just do 100-110 gram daily and do just as well if not better with recovery. And that would mean stopping the powder as he certainly goes over that with the food.
And this, along with drugs, is why gym bros die early. They can't basic math. A lot of protein that stresses the kidneys and gets peed out. As a bodybuilder, you want excess calories, and the protein will take care of itself if you're not on soda and oreos.
>It has the most diverse range of proteins, about as much protein as dairy
No on in the west is lacking protein. If anything, we get too much.
Registered Dietician Jeff Novick:
>Protein is one of the most misunderstood nutrients in our diets today. While it receives an incredible amount of attention, there is little justification for this level of attention and concern. Yet protein, specifically animal protein (meat, chicken and/or fish), remains the main center of the plate at home and in restaurants.
>People seem so concerned about making sure they’re getting enough protein that you would think protein deficiency is a common problem. However, true protein deficiency, in the absence of inadequate calories or a junk-food diet which has more serious problems than a lack of protein, is virtually non-existent — even in athletes and those who are active and exercise regularly. In fact, in over 25 years of work in both clinical and public health, I have never seen one case of true protein deficiency.
>almost no saturated fats but also lots of healthy fats
No on in the west is lacking fat. In fact, it makes up 40% of the standard western diet are fat calories.
In addition, the omega 6 to 3 ratio is an unfavorable 7.5 to 1, when we should strive for 4:1.
>and pretty low carbs.
This sounds like keto science. Why would any one want low carbs? That's how people get the cleanest form of their daily energy. Unlike fat, the wast products are purely water (urine) and carbon dioxide (breathed out).
The healthiest populations are high carb. Like the generation of Okinawa, who lived to have the most centennials per capita, and much lower chronic disease than the west.
85% of their calories came from carbs. Populations who eat high carb (but natural) foods are healthy. People who eat high fat are, well, Americans and other westerners.

Soy Milk is thankfully not low carb but medium (46% of the calories) and I have nothing against it. It's just the macro argument in general and for it is complete bullshit.
Yes. For example, Dr Caledwell Esselstyn reversed heart disease on a WFPBD. The plaque went away abstaining from meat, dairy, and oil. Their labs values got tremendously better. There's a lot of evidence.

Great book on obsession with protein and harms of animal products
The China Study is another great book with lots of evidence
I have lots of evidence if you are interested. Meat and dairy is a lot worse than sugar imo.
I'd recommend reading Proteinaholic and The Plant Based Athlete.

Since you want an appeal to authority rather than facts, here's a medical doctor:
No, you don't need meat. You're most likely better off without it.
But protein doe... I'll just leave this here. https://www.amazon.com/Proteinaholic-Obsession-Meat-Killing-About/dp/0062279319
I enjoyed reading Proteinaholics ☺️ Lots of science based info

I still eat meat on occasion, but treat it like I do cookies and cake - ok in moderation (Holidays, family events, ect)
