With a cheap midi drum set you can probably get sounds close enough to what he wants to hear for now. Getting the foot bass drum/hi-hat action going as early as possible is good too, because it's one of those things that can be more difficult to learn with an older brain.
You can also try setting him up with some free drum machine software, like Hydrogen Connected properly you can for example plug a midi drum set into Hydrogen and get those sounds, it's just another input device you need to select. Spend half an hour on a Hydrogen tutorial yourself to see what I mean; you can also just use a keyboard for 'drums' on the default install. You don't have to create sequences with it, you can just play it as a live drum synth.
