I agree that it's hard to go wrong using R, even it's not quite like SPSS. The time a student invests in learning this will be something that can easily pay them back.
One of the profs at my school, who teaches a business stats class, wrote a package called less-R, and wrote a book to go with it. I haven't used it, but my understanding is that he wrote the package to help hide away some of the harder things with R and make basic analysis tasks easier.
Here's a link to the package: https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/lessR/index.html
A link to his book: http://www.amazon.com/R-Data-Analysis-without-Programming/dp/0415657202
And a link to a video where he provides a set of tutorials on R in general and less-R: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcuuCj5E7Q-7Qr4HwNleYmXBAZA_U__VQ
Disclaimer: I don't actually know him and I haven't taken his classes or used this package.
