There are a lot of published works on the influences and style of ASOIAF. I would recommend reading Race for the Iron Throne: Political and Historical Analysis of "A Game of Thrones" by Steven Attewell.
As far as theories go, it depends who you are writing the article for. If you are writing for fans of the show, you'd have to provide some background detail in order to explain the popular theory (which is not tinfoil) that Jon Snow is the son of Rheagar Targ and Lyanna Stark.
