My recommendation is the first book from Joe Schwarcz: Radar, Hula Hoops, and Playful Pigs.
It is a book on popular science with focus on chemistry. They are divided on stories about some subject of the day to day life and explain what is happening, why it is important to know about it and what the chemical knowledge adds to that.
Very enlightening and diverse. You will not learn chemistry with depth (because it is not a textbook), but you'll learn a lot!
I knew I wanted to major in chem since the first year of high school. I read it on my last year and it just reinforced that feeling.
