I haven't used water but application fluid for large vehicle graphics and it is a life saver. https://www.amazon.com/RapidTac-RT-10321-9-Vinyl-Application-Fluid/dp/B006RUG9XO/ on small stuff I haven't found it to be totally necessary, but nice to have.
