I really enjoy my Razor Kraken. Its got great audio levels and a retractable mic with decent quality. It is a USB headset which would be the downside but I can wear it all day with no issue. My last headset caused all kinds of headaches and ear irritation/sensitivity after long sessions so I know that pain

Best headset I ever bought. Look for another version of it if you like, or use the money you save to buy yourself two new games! ^ ^
I use a set of Razer Krakens that I absolutely love.
They've got an attached mic, but it's extendible and just sits inside the headphone.
Razer Kraken 7.1. I've owned a few different headsets (Logitech G930, Astro A40, Tritton 7.1), and the Razer ones have been my favorite. All of the ones I listed broke after a year, except the A40s. I stopped using the A40s because I needed an optical connection for surround sound, so I gave the Krakens a shot. The sound quality is damn good. No problems yet, I've been using them for about a year. Only thing is that they don't play nice with USB 3. Surround sound is good, not the best, but okay. For 99$ they're the best you can get. Pretty comfortable as well, after a very long session my earlobes will start to hurt though. Link.
Edit: Long session is about 4-5 hours, although I do have relatively long ears.
