I might be the same age as you. I started with Harbin books in the 70's and 80's and I have the Patricia Crawford / Harbin book.
If you can fold the Jackstone then you will be fine with lots of modern models but there is a greater emphasis on sculpture (shaping) these days that require special paper.
The John Montrol / Fumiaki Kawaha books available cheap on Amazon will be great bridge to the really modern stuff.

If you have spare cash then get a copy of Hideo Komatsu's book from Japan. It is an object of beauty in it's own right and the folding sequences are ingenious and fun.

As others have said there is lots of free stuff online too.
