Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate, White, Fits Spaces between 29" and 39" Wide https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_4dghzbNTQG8KR
This was $32. The gaps were too wide for our small breed puppy (7lbs at the time) though. Also consider buying used through Amazon, it's just a gate after all!
Is it possible to put the gate on the first step from the top rather than the top of the stairs? That's what we did so we wouldn't be tripping over the bottom bar. It's snug against the top "step" so the door does have to swing out onto the stairs. Ours is like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_imm_H4496GKS6R4V6YNC61S5
The bars should be wide enough for a cat to slip through.
If it’s not a large dog you could get baby gates Regalo Easy Step 38.5-Inch Extra Wide Walk Thru Baby Gate, White Original version https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_8VSKZ623S495PYG7K4WJ They make them in different sizes and have ones with doors.
Might be able to use this one. It's adjustable, and comes with extension pieces to fit most places. Looks like you'll be able to squeeze it on the bottom of the 3rd step.
Got this from Amazon. Needed something it doesn’t require nailing the walls. I highly recommended!!
I don’t have stairs so I don’t know the specific safety guidelines for them, but this baby gate is amazing.

Yup I do this! Maybe you need two shorter gates, or just the top gate could be shorter? :/ these are what I have, kittens would definitely slip through but for height and opening mechanism (the gate doesn’t have to be lifted up or anything) might be helpful to compare: https://www.amazon.com/Regalo-39-Inch-6-Inch-Extension-Pressure/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=35MPJX27G9NZR&keywords=pet+gate+regalo&qid=1641653286&sprefix=pet+gate+regalo%2Caps%2C115&sr=8-3
I got gates off amazon that have a cat door on the bottom. My cats refuse to jump gates so this was the only option. My baby isn’t due until April, but it works well for keeping dogs out of room cats can go in haha
I have these ones! They are easy to use one handed.
You can buy walk through baby gates on Amazon for like $40 oh these are on sale for $25! I've spent a fortune on them because I'm in the same scenario: open floor plan/old house with doors that don't close, new puppy, older parents.
We used these. It's a compression fit. Our little one likes to pull and try to climb it, but so far it hasn't budged. I've even ran into it in the night and it didn't move. (I'm a pretty big dude) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_apa_i_8zbYDbF7B2JB3
Thank you all again for the great suggestions. In the end this is what I bought. Regalo Easy Step Walk Thru Gate, White, Fits Spaces between 29" and 39" Wide https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OC5UMQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 It was super easy to put up and the buns are too big to get through the slats.
No baby yet (4 weeks till I'm due) but this is something that terrifies me. I have an almost 10 year old Scottie and while he doesn't lick, isn't super hyperactive, aggressive, or even needy (he mostly just wants to sit next to you on the couch) he does shed, bring in leaves/dirt, barks at dogs walking by, and doesn't hesitate to pee in the house if he has to go. Luckily our living room opens to the backyard so letting him in/out isn't that big of a deal - it's just when we're gone for 4+ hours.
From what just about everyone has told me the adjustment period with pets is pretty normal. My SIL has told me repeatedly how I'll resent my dog (of course she has a hyperactive lab and an aggressive min. pin, both of which annoyed me from time-to-time pre-pregnancy so I can understand why she resents them). I'm more concerned with the fact that we're living with our in-laws who have two dogs. The first is a 12 year old spaniel who has chronic ear infections and will snarl at anyone who tries to get him to do anything (get off the couch, go outside, or even eat) and the other is a 11 year old chihuahua who is a velcro dog and possessive of people, including me. To keep them out of our living space and our dog out of the baby's room we're planning on investing in these baby gates that you can open with one hand and step through, have you considered those?
Why do people still have those goddamn scissor-like wooden ones? It can't be worth saving $20 to have to fool with unhinging that thing every time you need to go into another room. Get a damn swinging gate.

Does your baby gate have horizontal bars? Our pup learned really early on to climb out of his x-pen by sticking his feet on the horizontal bars, climbing to the top, then jumping off. It was really scary, one time he got his foot caught and was dangling upside down. Luckily we were at home, but I crated him from then on.
Now he's older and roams more, we use baby gates that only have vertical bars so he can't climb out. There are what we have: https://www.amazon.com/Regalo-Easy-White-spaces-between/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1469486747&sr=1-1&keywords=baby+gate. You have to make sure though that the vertical bars aren't wide enough for your pup to fit though.
I have this gate. It's 31" tall and adjustable width. I also live in an apartment, and it can be pressure mounted. I found it worked very well, and it's not expensive at all.
Theoretically a dog could body-slam it down I suppose, but I have a hard time imagining a 40-pound dog doing it without hurting itself.
So you either need to give up a month of free time and watch her like a hawk or baby-gate off those areas so that shes always somewhere you can see her.
Amazon has some pretty good babygates for cheap. My dog did this exact same thing, so i babygated off the areas she usually went. This is the one I got: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OC5UMQ
held up really well.
I have this one and it's great. Adjustable width top and bottom and a door.
We have four of these positioned around the house, including stairs. It inclues little cups that can screw into the wall which we only used for the top of the stairs one, since there's a huge risk of inury if the gate comes free.

The way we set our house up was to create a "safe space" so to speak, which for us is our kitchen and living room since they connect to each other. We baby-proofed the hell out of the area so he can play in the area while we cook dinner, hang out on the couch, etc. We still keep an eye on him but we can step away for a minute or two to go use the restroom or whatever without risking him chewing on electrical cords.

Have you looked into one like this?

I use normal baby gates in my house and I have 2 dogs. The following is my favorite of the many gates I've bought:
https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_D6Q6MC0JTWPZ6AX1APDN
This at the top: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_p2LeGbBDTFW67
This at the bottom: (you can remove one section if needed, but it will wrap around the stairs with no railing-provided you measure and make sure) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0024FAWSE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_e3LeGbC4WWC5F
This is the ready-made solution that worked for our unique situation. There are different sizes and configurations, at every joint you can disconnect sections and reconnect to the wall mounts. If all else fails when mounting use zip ties.
Or just use it as inspiration to make your own version.
I would bet a cat could fit through this but a baby couldn't. It's what we have but we don't have cats. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001OC5UMQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bQyNFbWGH6J8K?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Here is what I got off of Amazon and I have been very happy.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OC5UMQ
I did have to attach a board over one of the two just because the gap was a bit more than desired and the smaller of my two buns could get through it. The other gate she can not get through, since the door gap is smaller.
NTA. Tale as old as time.
If people can't afford that, it's the cost of 5 Chipotle Burrito Bowls.
Get a Regalo baby gate and screw it to the door frame outside of their bedroom door. That way you can shut their bedroom door at night as normal and during the day, they still can't get out of their bedroom. I think the general rule that I was told is that the gate should be over their collarbone so they can't climb over it easily. Regalo makes an extra tall version, as well, for when they get taller.
I also purchased a Regalo super wide gate that I used a portion of to block off his TV and cable box in his room so he can't get to it, the outlet they're plugged into, the window, or the closet door. So him getting to any of those things isn't a possibility for him anymore at all, at least at his current age and ability.
I also put a full size memory foam mattress in the floor of the room so he can get used to taking naps on it with me instead of in his pack n play, which has been his primary bed since he was born. It's easier for me and my husband to go hang out with him in his room with the full size mattress on the floor. Watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse from the bed is easier on us and safer for him.
This camera is cheap and has a smartphone app. Good resolution, good night vision, and the app lets me access his camera from outside the house if I need to, even if I'm in town.
We have these and we love them.

My little girl was climbing this thing the first week I got it - nothing would keep her in the kitchen. Then I got this. Escape-proof.
