Hey, there! It's going alright. We have had them basically face-to-face in the kitchen while feeding the doggo chicken. She is way more focused on the treat than the cat, which is awesome. But upstairs is kind of "going back to kindergarten" as our trainer says because dogs need to learn everything in new contexts, i.e. the same cat she met downstairs is a stranger upstairs. We're making more and more progress everyday, but it's still going to be a while before they're bosom buddies. Our plan is to get them to the level where the dog isn't freaking out about being in the same room (cat DGAF) then we're going to get the cat a tree to climb. Right now, they spend most of their time separated.
As far as gates go, we bought this one. It's so tall that my cat doesn't even wanna cross it and the dog can't jump it. With enough motivation, she could probably knock it over, but hasn't tried to...yet.
This might sound a little odd but I recommend frozen bottles of water. Our puppy goes to bed in her crate with one. If I put one in the middle of the floor she'll take a nap with it. It really calms her down especially for down time or sleeping. I've been taking one along in the car when we have to drive somewhere like the vets. It has to be something with a fairly large cap that you can screw on tightly. Flat sided is good like a big juice bottle or Arizona Tea.
She only sleeps in her crate, which she likes to do, and once she's awake she's baby-gated into a tiled air-conditioned room that's been puppy proofed as she picks up everything she finds especially paper or plastic. I tried putting her into the bigger crate in "her" room and she had a crazy fit when I closed the door. So now I leave her gated because I don't want her to hate the bigger crate where she's going to have to eventually graduate to sleeping. This gate is pretty good and not that expensive. I got the taller version
My first one I didn't crate or gate off at all but with this one- I liken her to one of those rotary cutting machines they use for clearing trees and brush from the side of the highway.
I'm not sure if it makes a difference. I've always kept my dogs in the carpeted areas because I thought it would be more comfortable for them to lie down and romp around.
Unfortunately I don't know where our pen is from because it was a gift. It's 48" and easily detached from the sides so it can be expanded as desired. I know there are plenty of pens that have roofs on them but I haven't used them myself. If I'm concerned a dog will get out of the pen then I use my over sized baby gate to contain them. Something to consider when picking out a pen for your dog:

My 2yr old can open this type
How tall is your baby gate? Raised up a bit, something like this would be almost 4ft tall and has a door you can walk through.
