I haven't really. I stopped in Santo Domingo for a few hours on a cruise I took when I was 15. Otherwise, no. But my family is from Puerto Rico so I'm hoping it won't be too much different.
Do you guys have your passports and everything? I renewed mine as soon as we booked the trip, but my fiancé took forever to get his! I eventually threatened to change the trip to something in the U.S. if he didn't get it and that finally got him moving! I'm a big planner and he's not, so it's a bit of a battle sometimes ;)
Not sure where you're staying, but we're doing an all-inclusive in Punta Cana. Here are a few tips from what I've seen in my research:
Bring bug spray! I've heard the mosquitoes there are a particular brand of evil! I bought this one on Amazon, but it's going to have to go in checked luggage because it's 6 oz: Repel 40% Deet
There is a "tourist card" somewhat like a visa that you are required to purchase at the airport before you can enter the country. I think it's $20. A lot of people are surprised by this so I wanted to give you the heads up.
If you're staying at a resort, pushy vendors will come in from the beach and try to get you to buy stuff. I know from my short trip there that if you go into the cities there is a lot of poverty and beggars, vendors, etc. and they will target tourists. So just be careful and smart.
I've read that at a lot of resorts, the staff (cleaning and maintenance, etc.) don't speak English well so it could come in handy for you to bring a Spanish/English dictionary and learn some helpful phrases.
I read that Punta Cana is having a problem that for the past month or so there is a TON of seaweed washing up on the shore making it almost impossible to walk on the beach. Hopefully that will be cleared up by the time we get there!
I hope you have a blast!
Apart from all the other tips in the comments, i would highly recommend carrying a mosquito repellent like DEET (40%).
Dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases peak in October and November. Apply it on your exposed skin and clothes. Don’t take any chances with these viral diseases.
P.S - It’s really hard to find DEET in India. But it’s widely available in the US. I would recommend getting (this)[https://www.amazon.com/Repel-Insect-Repellent-Sportsmen-Formula/dp/B0054NFYDG/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?crid=35SMFRFMR53W8&keywords=deet+40&qid=1658988006&sprefix=deet+4%2Caps%2C319&sr=8-5]
