The camp was discovered by British SAS who were acting as forward recon for the advancing American Army. My guess is that those guys are part of that SAS detachment. There is a really good book out telling the history of the SAS called "Rogue Heroes". At the end it has accounts of their discovery of this camp, its liberation, and how it effected them for the rest of their lives.
General issue. Preference for Sub-MG and Medium MGs
Volunteers
Mixed.
Depends on the theatre. For the amount of man power committed they punched above their weight class.
Great book on the SAS in WW2

Rogue Heroes (the story of the British SAS)
is the best military history book I have ever read. It's about a bunch of British Army outcasts, head-cases and fuckups (and the odd aristocrat) who basically invent the "special forces" approach to war fighting in the North African dessert, push up through Italy and into northern Europe and end up liberating Bergen-Belsen. Lots of great characters, riveting action, some very funny parts and of course, a lot of human tragedy and ugliness.
The creativity, pluck and balls these guys had is just amazing
If dad likes WWII history Rogue Heroes is outstanding and I'd recommend to anyone remotely interested in this subject area.
It's about the founding and exploits of the British Army's 'Special Air Service' (SAS) which became the model for all modern 'special forces' units. The founders themselves are a bunch of misfits and outcasts from all walks of life, including some real sketchy/edgy characters who nonetheless become the proverbial "band of brothers" etc. It starts out during the N. African campaign, there are some genuinely funny parts therein but it gets more grim and ugly when the action moves to Europe. The unit liberates the first concentration camp (also grim), there is a beloved chaplain, and characters as strong as any in good fiction. Lots of daring-do, crazy improvisations, etc
For francophile sis Le Divorce is a very solid rom-com and the book is better than the movie but the movie is decent too
You should make an exception for this one. Certainly the best WWII book I've read.
Basically the first 'special forces' outfit - a British regiment founded in Egypt in 1941 by a bunch of misfits and crazy bastards: https://www.amazon.com/Rogue-Heroes-History-Britains-Sabotaged/dp/110190416X
This pirate saga is outstanding too: https://www.amazon.com/Enemy-All-Mankind-Historys-Manhunt/dp/B081HG5VN5/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=enemy+of+all+mankind&qid=1631243718&s=books&sr=1-1
