I run with this clipped to the back of my running tights. My shirt/jacket covers it. I've never had to use it - yet - but there are a few asshats on my local *leashed dogs only* trail that think the rules are not for them.
Always carry this clipped to a timing belt.

Never used this one yet, but successfully used one similar years ago.
Throwing a rock or faking throwing a rock works if they are not an immediate threat.
This is why I always carry this thing whenever my dogs and I leave the house. I had to use bear spray on a griz in Alaska and it worked instantly, really hope this stuff works on pits too.... Cause I will stab the shit out of any dog that attacks my dogs
I’ve started carrying dog pepper spray with me when I walk my dog. People let their dogs off leash all the time. A pitbull ( coincidence, I’m not a pit hater ) came running through the parking garage and attacked my neighbors dog while the owner was still outside. I bough the spray after that and thankfully haven’t had to use it.
I ride my bike with our lab/rot mix, and my wife walks/runs with him. We've had our fair share of run ins with irresponsible dog owners. We purchased some dog specific pepper spray that has been great for peace of mind in case a dog attacks ours, or vice-versa. Its definitely given my wife, who is small framed and would definitely struggle to break up a fight between our large dog and another, more confidence.
A bat will be useless. If a coyote is that close then your dogs will be freaking out, making a bat impossible to use without letting go of the dogs.
A gun would be best. It makes noise and defends you/dogs from a distance.
Next best is something that sprays from a distance, like this

Dude, get the right tool for the job. Bear spray would be cruel and unusual.
Long-range dog spray, this has a range of 15ft.
If an off-leash dog gets in range, spray him. It’s is the safest outcome for all involved.
