FYI - The pins that hold the latches in place eventually walk out. I put some tape over them and then make sure they stay in place every few weeks.
There are child proof deadbolt covers too, they slip over the existing deadbolt and dont hamper the deadbolt operation. They are landlord friendly.

This is the lock I purchased when my little guy followed me outside of the house when I left for work one day. In fact, you can see a picture of him trying to open it in one of the top reviews lol. Works great and doesn't require you to add holes to your door.

It was 5 am, and someone found him wandering at the end of my steet and called the police. Fun times!

I hope this is allowed! This has been a lifesaver in my house!! We also had early intervention come out to do an evaluation on my toddler and neither of the therapists had ever seen it but they loved it!!
My son is also an escape artist. It’s better now that he is 4, but from age 2-4, we had the house under constant lock and key. I highly recommend these deadbolt covers — you can still use your key from outside to unlock it, which works better for us than the latch chain.

I’m so sorry I didn’t see the notification. But I think I have something that may help you.
My kids were also escape artists and the only thing that they couldn’t figure out is the Safety First Deadbolt Lock
You just loosen the existing deadbolt screws slightly so the metal frame can slide behind it, and then tighten, and add the deadbolt cover and screws. Crazy easy for adults and difficult for kids. My 6yo can finally open it but my 2yo is still stumped. It’s on every exterior door we have. No new holes or screws in doors either.
From the exterior you can’t tell there’s anything different. Let me know if you have any questions and I’d be happy to help where I can!
Would this work? I have an autistic runner and it stops him (and most adults that come to our place 😂). Super easy to install, just loosen the deadbolt, fit over, and retighten.
Havent seen them over here but this cover does exist.

Other option is getting the thumb turn replaced with a lock but its a hazard in the event of a fire, dont want to be fumbling around for keys.
My youngest has done this. Twice. The second time I bought a deadbolt cover that I love. Hasn’t happened since. Some kids are more prone to wander, they’re braver, and you can’t have eyes everywhere. It’s okay mama.
Our daughter recently did something similar. She walked out the front door after opening the deadbolt by herself and walked around to our backyard. I ran out to the garage for a second, and when I came back in I couldn't find her anywhere. She shut the door after herself, so I didn't know she'd gotten out right away. I looked outside into the backyard and called out for her as she's walking around the side saying, "I'm here Mommy, I'm here".
We ordered this a couple days later.
This sort of thing is what /u/dakdaddy22 is talking about. You should be able to find that, or a substantially similar device at Walmart or any home building supplies big box store.
Oh man, my son can unlock the doors too and it was heart attack inducing! We bought these lock covers and just keep the deadbolt engaged all the time when we are inside. They just screw into the doorknob set, no drilling into the actual door

Yeah, they figure these things out way too fast. Just this morning my 3 year said "I'll get my vitamin," and grabbed the big childproof jar of gummy vitamins. I'm thinking this is great, she can fool with it for a minute while I make her breakfast, and I'll open it for her when she gives up. Nope. Childproof cap off in 5 seconds. I think I'll spend tonight doubling up on cabinet locks for the medicines.
On the front door thing:these work really well and I find they're not as annoying for adults.
It's not a lock, but seems to confuse the hell out of your average adult as to how it opens. Especially if they're just reaching in and can't see it. Benefit is that it doesn't use any new screw holes and just slides in around the existing dead bolt.

Would something like this work?
we bought one of these just in case. It worked pretty well
This is the best one I have used. I’ve put it on all my exterior doors and it gives me peace of mind. Hope it helps you!

This has been a life saver in my home! I’m surprised that no one else has heard of them!!
We were in the same boat a year ago. This thing has worked great.
